Post By NotSarah. 25/07/09, 12:12 pm

I'd totally be keen to go to this if someone could help me with my costume; I'm thinking about cosplaying Rukia from bleach, so I'd have to make a hakama and a kosode. I haven't done any costume making before, and I haven't sewn anything much since school in year 10.. do you think someone would be able to help me make this or work out what fabric I need or something?

It seems that Riven is our resident expert at making a hakama, but she
might not be coming. I personally have no idea how to make one - though
I've been told they're easy to make but I'm sure someone here will know
how to make one. I know that our tutorial database has some links for
making a hakama and kosode. I could possibly help if you bring
instructions and everything else along. Are you going to go fabric
shopping?

I probably will. How much money will things cost? I really have no idea, and need to work on begging money off my parents this far beforehand :)

Sounds awesomely useful... but my bf is probably staying over that weekend and he's scared enough of me becoming a cosplayer as it is! rofl. He's too used to laughing at them.

Depends on type and length of fabric you want and any extras you think you might need.

You're probably looking at cotton for what you're wanting to make, which depending on the brand and weight is usually aournd $9+ a metre. As for length I have know idea how much fabric you'll need for a hakama and kosode, sorry. So I can't really say how much you should take with you.

Otherwise, I might save the epic Rukia cosplay for some other time when I actually have ages in advance to work on it, and do something easier for now..

Anywhere from $4 to $30 a meter.

Tell him to grow up. You aren't going to be a different person cause you dress up. And people should treat people like people, no matter how they are dressed.

Uhm research. Allow plenty of money. And print off pictures of your character (which you can find on the internet) from different angles. Then you can be sure of drape, color etc. Hakama can be made of different stuff, but heavy cotton is normal.

There was a good tutorial I saw the other day online somewhere.

As far as Hakama fabric goes, you will probably need 2.5-3 metres for one. This depends on how tall you are but I wouldn't recommend getting less than 2.5m.

Heavy fabric has already been mentioned, but also make sure you get a fabric that holds pleats well. (you will probably want to iron pleats in to get the look/shape right) Some fabric will hold ironing well through washing etc.
I am not good with terminology / names of fabric, but at the very least if someone here can't help you, the person at the fabric store should be able to tell you what you need. (I'm tempted to say a heavy weight polycotton would be good)

Other than that, they're not very difficult. Just be sure to measure carefully/draw the whole thing on the fabric with chalk etc, and never cut more than you have to!

the only guide on the internet that I've found thus far that has measurements on it says I need like 265cm to fit me for the hakama, and 308 cm for the kosode. Does that sound roughly right?

In short - no. Sorry, if it something easy then possibly in a few but you cannot sew a ball gown or mostly anything in the short time of a lesson. But if you had something in mind bring those ideas along and we'll see what we can do.

But, but.... you meanie!! gonk :p I'm sure that between Mandie and I we can find pretty and CHEAP fabric for you!!! I know how it is, I need to control my spending for this..... But then I don't actually need the flashy fabric just plain pretty stuff... Which reminds me, I need to print out my character info/pics for the shopping of the pretty fabrics but this is hard to do as my mum has set the printer to wireless and my comp isn't picking up the signal...
