Anime Subbed or dubbed OOH CONTROVERSY!
Post By xsilent_shadow_kunx. 08/01/10, 03:54 pm

Okay guy I was just wondering what do you prefer!?!

Subbed or dubbed

This is my personal opinion so don't give me the bash for this but I perfer dubbed when I first watch an anime *gets hit on the side of the head with a tomato*
I watch it dubbed because you still get the same story (most of the time) and its easier to keep up with it!
The second time round I watch it subbed then I can see the differences and see what the English left out.

Another reason I perfer dubbed is because the jokes are easier to get and you don't hear chan or kun every five minutes. (I'm sorry but I really hate hearings those words because my friends used to go round calling each other blah-chan or blah-kun ALL THE TIME)

Anyway whats your view?

I like both. I mean, some dubs can kill characters, like in bleach
[;___; Luppi...WHY DO YOU SOUND SO MALE? D:] but I do generally prefer
dubs, mainly because I'm too lazy to read subs. xD Some dubs are really
good, like FMA and Scrapped Princess, and then there are the bad ones
[I haven't encountered any, except for Bleach in some parts.]
But I also find the japanese voices to be more expressive and more often suit the character.
I dread/look foreward to the Reborn dub. They might do decently on the
vongola gaurdians, but the varia is screwed. D: [I cannot think of
ANYONE who could do a decent job of Xanxus or Squalo's voice.]
But chyeah. :p

>_> I like both.

And I really don't like the negativity towards dubs. They sound different /because they're in another language/. I mean, you can get really bad ones. (D.N. Angel >_>) But you can also get really good ones. (Ouran. <3)

You can probably also get bad Japanese ones. But you probably won't be able to tell it's bad because /it's in Japanese/.

I'm probably mostly fond of English voices because I'm interested in Voice Acting when I grow up. xD

i'm biased, i prefer subs =p
i grew up watching anime dubbed in malay, and it is *BAD*.

don't get me wrong, if you give me anime dubbed in english, i'll devour it assuming i'm not too lazy to watch in the first place but i generally prefer subbed. i totally don't learn japanese by watching subbed anime and subbed japanese MVs...

Subbed. It makes me sad to learn about what gets cut from dubs, so much that I generally don't watch them anymore.
The exception is Yugioh. That's so bad its good.

I like both. The original voices are normally nice to listen to and a lot of them have really lovely voices. And it feels good when you recognize some of the words they use *is a dork*

Dubbed versions provide good background noise for studying, where you can listen to it and not be frustrated by not knowing what they're saying. Also, I find it a nice experience to listen to something different once in a while ;D

Then again, a lot of the time I prefer the version I hear first. Like FMA -- I first heard that in English when I borrowed the box set off Kiki who suggested the english version. Switching to japanese after I'd run out of English ones to watch was really painful and difficult >.>

As for Reborn... I can't wait for the dubs to come out. Because then they'll release DVDs and I'll be able to buy them and feel special Very Happy *is lame*

xDD That, too. It'll take like two years for it to get up to the varia arc though. D8
God knows how long till the TYL arc. /sigh

I know a lot of people don't like it, but I have to say- I love the d.gray-man dub.
Kill me now, but I seriously cannot wait for Jasdevi's fight to come out in english. <333

I like both (cos I'm greedy)....Yet I believe I do tend to lean more towards Subs XD

I will always give a Dub a go (especially now days since most companies do really good jobs) and only if I find I don't like the voices will I switch to subs. Dubs are also good because it mean you can play them in the background...or in my case increase the chances of my mother watching them with me (I have managed to get her to watch quite a lot by saying I will keep it in english).

Then I love Subs because I love listening to Japanese XD....Also if I start a series before it get licensed (and released) I get so used to the Japanese voices that switching to the dub takes a bit of getting used to.

Then on that rare occassion I will find that I like the Dub more....COWBOY BEBOP!

Or on an even rarer occassion I will like neither the Sub or the Dub and just want to rip my ears off.....X the Movie.

I LIEK SPANISH DUBZ.

wait...

i like dubs. because i speak English, and because of the things SLK said.

sure, when things haven't been translated and they have subs, sure they're good.

but when there is English, it's much better.

"OH NO, THEY GOT THEIR VOICE COMPLETELY WRONG"

GTFO, it's a voice, and it's english, of coarse it wont match the japanese voice.

>_>

K Done.

(i have more to my reasoning, but cbf.)

I watch more subbed since I watch online =P
But when I have the dvd I'll always watch the dub.
I prefer things like Cromartie High dubbed, since it's a comedy and reading the jokes isn't quite the same... Plus the guy who does the main character's voice in that is hilarious XD

I lo~ve the Wolf's Rain dub as well <3 It is godly.
I tend to watch things subbed first though, just cause =P

Durrhurr. I'm sure there's already a thread about this but I'll just paraphrase my answer there.

Subbed -- by preference in TV animes, mainly because I hate having stuff cut out (for instance perhaps references to Japanese culture) and the general sanitizing I see for Western (younger) audiences.

I have a slight preference to see things things in their original language, be it anime or movies. Novels too, if I'm competent enough.
I also often get the feeling that dubs are sometimes more stilted and unnatural -- at least, for TV anime. That could just be me being biased though.

And, of course, I think Japanese is a nice language to listen to, even if it is incomprehensible sounds.

Dubbed -- For movies, I'll happily watch the dub if I feel lazy and don't want to read subtitles. To take one instance, I recently watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and I thought the dub was quite good, and as a bonus, they didn't do any name changing or cutting things out. I think that movies often have a slightly higher quality of dubbing, perhaps due to the higher budget.

Stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh and Cardcaptors I find difficult to watch subbed, because all the voices seem "wrong" from what I remember in my childhood.

IDK, for anime that has a short run, sometimes subbed is just easier to find on the internet, because of its popularity.

This.

Eh. I prefer Subs, for the jokes and plot points that get lost in translation in Dubs, but I really don't hate dubs with the same vehemence that many do. It is the voices, not the language....If I dont like the voices in Japanese, I'll watch it in english with no hesitation. I could never watch Gurren Lagann dubbed, simply because I adore each and every voice in the original Japanese, but I found myself longing for a SOUL EATER dub at times...Ugh, Makas voice.

Here's my opinion;;

I used to like dubs... when I was 12. After discovering the dub for higurashi, I had come to the realization that english dubs are getting worse and worse these days. Fullmetal alchemist is good dubbed, so are movies, But less popular animes that get dubbed *A* Oh god.

Subs are very good <3 I love them alot, like the higurashi sub, umineko sub, Haruhi sub amongst others. The thing about subs is that since it's the original version you seem to get alot more emotion and passion from the VAs I've noticed, In english, The emotion is lacking.

anyway. thats just my opinion.

huhurhur what a dangerous topic for me
the many people who know me know that i PASSIONATELY horribly biased against dubs. Being forced in order to get my anime fix to put up with malay, mandarin and english dubs does not do good things to people.

Hurr subs are good. RAWs are even better 8D. The quality ahuhuhu <3~. Yes I do spend too much time with geeks who can supply me with much all at least MKV quality ... even bluray >>

//melts aaaa CCS IN BLURAY IS AMAZING <3~

but ANYWAYS while subs are usually better there are some rare cases where the dub is better

e.g. Samurai Pizza Cats

Believe me it is actually dead serious in the Japanese verison while the English dub is ridiculous because they didn't have the script so they just made stuff up XD (has samurai pizza cats)

and please do not get me started on Yamato Nadeshico Shici Henge (The Wallflower) Japanese anime ... I will rip your brains out if you think that anime is good because it ... rips the manga to shreds ... literally ... bad animation, mismatched seiyuu, etc.

Even for Skip Beat though I am an avid fan of Inoue Marina (Kitsu Chiri, Minami Kana) I don't think she quite cuts it as Mogami Kyouko, just my feeling.

And admittedly I liked the Ouran dub but >| NOT VIC MIGNOGNIA he sounded like a drag queen who was trying to hard

VIVA MIYANO MAMORU~! chyeah I listened to the Drama CD as well Fukuyama Jun doesn't quite cut it as Tamaki either. Tamaki needs someone a little silly and somewhat flamboyant in personality (chyeah I listened to the seiyuu bonus CDs as well ... Miyano Mamoru is so cute ... and Matsukaze Masaya (Ootori Kyouya) is the complete opposite of Kyouya its funny 8D)

Dubs are actually getting better (does not understand why people think that FMA was one of the good dubs SUUUUUURE it has Vic Mignognia in it but seriouly ... no ... just no)

and pfft lol dubbing for hentai ... chyeah it doesnt work ... they turn an artwork into a cheap porn movie =w=;;

ok end of rant 8D

hur adding stuff because i can ... the quality of the sub also depends on which group you get the subbing from

i mean you could just go pro and watch the raws XD

and yes i have anime in sub as my background noise of choice ...

I like both. Some anime I prefer to watch subbed, others I like to watch dubbed (like when I'm sewing at the same time as someone else said XD ). I'm not really hard core about watching something one way or the other.

Anime from my childhood I watch dubbed. Just cos that's how I remember them and they sound funny in Japanese haha. Whereas something like Naruto I preferentially watch subbed, but at the same time I don't mind it dubbed either.

It all depends for me.
But it's too hard to explian.
I watch some Dub like FMA, Lucky star, Death note etcera
then I watch Sub for like: Bleach, Gravation, and the anime movies.
and then i'll watch some dubed for some episodeds then i'll want to hear the japaness voices for then i'll watch sub.

and i like sub more than dub because I have lerant some words from the japaness lanuage beside Hello, good morning, bye, my name is...
and the voices are so much better.

Subs.

Most Japanese VAs > most English VAs. That's just how I've found it.
I'm biased though, because I can mostly understand Japanese so I try to turn off the subs whenever I can to help me practice. :3

Competition breeds excellence.

The seiyuu industry in Japan dwarfs the rest of the world put together.
It's only natural that the average quality is higher. (all that remains after that is perception, opinion and taste)
