| Manifest occurred. That is Melbourne Anime Festival. It is a relatively small convention but being genre specific enjoys extremely high percentage of cosplayer attendance. It is like a mini version of Anime Expo, I recommend it if you are into Anime stuff. At least half of the booths are artists (like Anime Expo) which makes it quite fun especially if you like to buy fan art and other crafts.
Manifest. Friday: Zaji (Letter Bee). Saturday: Sky Jack (Shugo Chara). Sunday: Ken (Reborn!) Find photos here to get an idea: http://www.oldvcr.tv/events/
Now that Sky Jack is mostly done I am going to start working on Len.
I thought I would start the design with reference to the pattern I made for Li Syaorn School Uniform.
But I can't find it. I'll have to make a new one...

| Yes! ~~ Some progress on Len cosplay. Belts arrived!
I decided to buy theme instead of trying to make them myself. It seemed like too much hassle. (That might change if I decide to enter this in a contest) I got them buy asking an ebay seller if I can just buy the belt instead of the entire costume.
Pattern made for Lens top. As mentioned I was going to use the pattern I made for Li Syaoran but I could not find it. However I did find a photo of the collar before it was attached to the top.
I was able to base the design of Len's from that. I had forgotten what the shape needs to be as it comes over the shoulders to the front.
I got this awesome thing for $36 on Trademe recently.
After a good clean up it works really well. Pretty good for getting things made fast as it will sew the seam trim the edge and overlock all at the same time. It does all this very fast if you put your foot down hard and you don't have do all the fiddling around at the start and end of a piece like with a sewing machine. Just push the next piece of fabric under the foot and off it goes. I used it to make a prototype to confirm the Len design.
Sleeves are a bit long (probably should have made the main part shorter to accommodate the cuff...) . Body was a bit wide, neck opening is a bit wide. Pattern altered. Now I have a final pattern.
Now to make it! |

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 07/09/13, 09:36 am |
| White parts for Len's top cut out and assembled.
Seems I am trying to make this from very uncooperative fabrics. Scissors and over locker blade don't like cutting the white stuff. It also wants to stretch and turn into a mess especially the black which is quite thin.
Cuffs made.
And attached.
Top stitched with cover hem to get a nice finish. I found it was rather temperamental. Testing it out on equivalent fabric is important so you can get the tensions correct.
Collar
Attaching the yellow strip to the collar proved a bit difficult. I was not happy with the first attempt as it was slightly wrinkled. Second attempt I cut the yellow strips diagonally to allow them to stretch around the curve. This resulted in a better finish but still not perfect. Maybe it should have had some stabiliser / interfacing under it.
Next the bottom side of the collar needs to be attached then it can be attached to the top. |

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 15/09/13, 05:42 am |
| Len collar complete and attached!
There is an inside part to the collar that hides the seam. It folds inwards after everything is stitched around the neck opening on the shirt.
This might not be necessary if it was sewn on differently, but at least it hides the transition from white to black and that could look messy if the fold it not perfect.
I have also made the tie
I had to top stitch around the edge because this fabric won't stay creased. It has nylon fabric in it to make it sturdy. I also did this on the collar.
I made the triangle part that goes in the 'V' of the neck. A Bass Clef symbol is stitched onto it.
It is attached with snap fasteners as it needs to be removed when putting the top on or the opening is too small.
Top complete.
I think I need to remake the Tie though. It is too short and the point is a bit off center.
I have also made a prototype of the bottom edge of the shorts. I wanted a tidy method of attaching the belt loops for the yellow strap that goes around each leg. I came up with an idea to cover the ends of the belt loops with a fold in the fabric. Looks like it will work as long as it is aligned and sewn carefully.
First attempt (upper) turned out a bit messy, second attempt (lower) I stitched the first fold to hold everything before folding back and doing the top stitches. This makes it tidier. Have to be careful when sewing over the joins otherwise the top layer can get stretched and pulled along.

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 22/09/13, 08:46 am |
| I have made the arm sleeve things for Len. They are each made from two pieces of slightly tapered fabric sewn together.
I used some of the fabric left over from Sky Jack pants to make the 'LCD screens'.
The seams will be visible so need to be finished nicely. The more visible outer seam is sewn first and finished with cover hem stitch. The other seam sewn later is top stitched with a single line as it is too tight for cover hen to get in there.
They need elastic around the top edge to keep them in position. I did not want the elastic to cause bunching of the fabric because that would look messy. To get around this problem I sewed the elastic along one edge of a strip of nylon fabric.
The other edge of the strip was sewn to the edge of the sleeve thing.
This allows the elastic to stay hidden inside and the nylon is sturdy enough to provide support. Finally yellow strips are attached over each end.
Now the leg warmers. They will follow the same design ideas. Same technique with the elastic is used.
There are yellow bits near the top and the bottom of the front.
I put a strip of clear plastic over the bottom yellow edge because it is likely to drag on the ground. I wanted to give it some protection.
The plastic is from shower curtain packaging. I had thought it looked useful so didn't throw it away. (+1 for hoarding junk) Use a Teflon foot (buy one on Trademe) when sewing plastic, PVC etc. It will make things much easier.
Complete
Now to start on the shorts. |

| I really like what you've done with the elastic. I'm planning to use a similar technique for my Attack on Titan boot covers.
I also like that you put plastic along the bottom edge of the leg warmers. Very clever! And so much thought put into it. |

| ^ Thanks It's good to share ideas around. --
Lens shorts are complete apart from the yellow bands that go around the legs.
The black fabric is a lot thinner and has more stretch than I expected. To help give it some stability I put lining behind each piece. The two layers were held and sewn together as if they were single pieces. I did it like this so the lining helps to add thickness to each piece instead of hanging loose inside. This created a bit of difficulty during sewing because there was in inner layer with no stretch at all and a top layer that liked to stretch.
The part where the yellow bands go on the legs is created by folding the fabric over then folding it back in two places. This created a fold to hide the ends of the belt loops. This fold is stitched all the way along its length. I did this before sewing the inside leg seam.
When attempting to sew the outside of the waist band the fabric was stretching. I had to unpick it and sew again with paper on top. The paper prevented the sewing machine from pulling the top layer of fabric. (But paper reduces visibility making it more difficult to line things up) I put snap fasteners at the waist because if Velcro touches this fabric it will pull threads out of it. (I normally use Velcro instead of a button)

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 15/10/13, 02:26 pm |
| Straps for the bottom edges of Lens shorts are done. The straps were made with the same yellow fabric used elsewhere. As it is light and stretches a lot I cut two strips of nylon fabric to go under it.
All three layers are sewn together down the edges.
The edges are folded under and pinned in position. The edges are sewn down from the bottom side. This is done to prevent the top side from being pulled and stretched by the sewing machine foot.
It might seem a bit bad to have the bottom stitching visible but if the sewing machine tensions are set correctly it will be very difficult (impossible?) to tell that it is bottom side stitching. This is because the part where the top and bottom threads crossover each other will be in the center of the fabric hidden from both sides.
The straps are joined by snap fasteners at the back.
I made a new Tie. This time a bit longer. It fits correctly.
The sole edge of some white shoes was painted yellow.
The paint did not dry very well because it is on rubber. After a few days I painted over it with PVA glue. This melted the paint and made it a bit lumpy but at least now it has a better non sticky finish.
Last part is to style Wig. Second attempt has turned out ok. Though I think the ends need to be tidied up a bit.
Hair spikes partially cover ears. |

| I was not happy with the shoe covers I made for Sky Jack because the fabric was wrinkled up around the feet.
I improved this by gluing felt inside. I cut out pieces of felt similar shape to the pieces that make up the shoes cover. These were hot glued in around their edges. I also put a bit of padding on th top of the shoe.
This has held the fabric tighter and made the foot part look much nicer.

~ I moved my cosplay history and plans posts to the first post so they are easier to find. Created a better introduction. User named changed for better continuity across websites. ~
I am starting to decide on more future cosplays. For after Bit Cloud. I would like to make this version of Praxie from Urban Rivals.
http://fav.me/d2hl5ld
I have done some research to find some views of the Shinra Bansho ZX Facter character 'Kai' I would like to cosplay. Two versions:
http://www.palusuke.com/list/zexfacter1/ZX022.html http://www.palusuke.com/list/zexfacter3/ZX050.html
After a lot of searching (using Japanese words I can't read) I found fanart showing a back view

A fan made video on niconico http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm14784169 (Drarara ending with Shinra Bansho characters)
For now I will be having a short break from making cosplay while I work on a few other things. |

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 18/12/13, 02:22 pm |
| Starting to make Bit Cloud. The ref image is a bit inconsistent with its other views and screenshots in relation to the back of his inner shirt.
To make his shirt I used the pattern I made for Lunick's shirt as a base, as they are quite similar. Colours and panels are altered.
I made a prototype from scrap fabrics.
The neck line is quite unusual. A bit of experimenting with the prototype was required to find a suitable shape. I decided it was time to start the actual one. I did not have a full length dark blue zip so instead I used a strip of fabric for the lower section.
Front and back assembly is done.
Now the neck needs sorting out. On the prototype I sewed a ribbon like strip of fabric on the inside to cover the fold. I should work if done carefully enough and stretching the fabric is avoided.
Once that is done the rest should be no problem. |

Back to work. I finished off Bit Clouds shirt.
The collar was quite annoying and turned out a bit rough, but it sits ok when worn, that was the biggest concern.
Following that I made trousers. I took the pattern I developed for Sky Jack and modified it slightly. It had issues with the outside leg seams curving towards the front. I altered the widths of the front and back leg parts of the pattern and made a prototype to test it. Worked out better than before. The pattern had the blue sections at the top sides added and it was ready to make the real version.
When making the waistband from a fabric that can't have interfacing ironed onto it. I use felt to give the waistband some body.
To make it easier to install I sew it along the edge of the seam so that it won't move while I sew the fabric over.
Complete
The dark blue ended up a bit darker than I was expecting.
If you want to buy: PVC, Vinyl, Pleather fabric, have a look here http://www.ebay.com/sch/igloo0203/m.html
Now I will start the Jacket. |

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 01/01/14, 02:55 pm |
| I started to make Bit Clouds Jacket.
The pattern went through several revisions to develop all the shapes. A prototype of the base shape was made to help with this.
Then from that the different coloured sections were created.
Once all the parts are cut out the various sections are joined together. Fronts, back, collar, waist.
There were a few difficulties joining the different coloured parts together. I had to modify the front section to have the white part made from two pieces because it was too difficult to join it to the red as one piece.
Now the main parts are created they can be joined together.
Lining cut out and assembled.
Shoulder pads made and installed then the lining is installed. Now the collar and edging parts can be attached. Beginnings of collar installation.
To be continued. |

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 15/01/14, 02:39 pm |
| Jacket for Bit Cloud is getting close to completion.
Collar has a strip of felt in it. The felt is sewn in to hold it in position.
Collar folded over the felt and stitched down along the outside edge. Then red strips down the front opening of the jacket are attached. They go up to the top of the collar.
The bottom edge is installed. This is made from two red strips so that the back flap that hangs down can be sewn in along the bottom. There is a strip of felt in the bottom edge. It is attached on the inside first
Then the outside edge is sewn down.
I made the purple shape that goes on the front of the jacket. It is made from felt with the purple fabric stitched onto it. It is then sewn to the jacket front, adding a second line of stitching.
Now the final part on this jacket is the ends of the sleeves. A white band that has V cuts in two places on each sleeve.
I have worked out the shape required to create the V shapes. And made this prototype
Now it is time to make and install them. |

| Bit Cloud jacket is complete. Recently I was a bit sidetracked with some other things so it has taken longer than I wanted it to.
The ends of the sleeves have been finished off. Preparing to made the V Shapes
Attaching the edges of the V
Then finally the straight parts.
The ends of these ended up with a messy fold. I could not think of a more tidy way to do this.
Complete
Next I will make the gloves. |

| I have finished the gloves for Bit Cloud.
Cut out from a pattern I made and used previously.
Strips are sewn in between the fingers.
The yellow part on the back of the hands is created.
It is stitched on. There are pieces of felt in there and small amounts of double sided tape to hold it still while sewing around the edge.
Thumbs cut out, sewn together then installed.
A strip of fabric is sewn in down the side. Maybe this would not be needed if I made the pattern wider.
Now the hand part is finished. The cuff is attached.
And finished with some Velcro.
Shoes will be made next. |

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 27/04/14, 07:29 am |
| I got a bit side tracked over the last few months. This might be a slow year for cosplay. I have been working on some electronics things. High power RGB LED lights which I am hoping will help make cosplay photos more interesting. 50W LED needs a large heatsink.
Also working on a LCD touch screen controller for it.
I did make some cosplay progress.
Shoes for Bit Cloud started.
They are quite similar to what I made for Sky Jack. Base shoe cover with toe detail.
Leg part attached.
Bottom edge. (This was tricky to attach)
A strip of thin black fabric was sewn on top of the seam so it would slip under the sewing machine foot and not cause bunching up of the silver part.
It has felt in it to keep it straight.
Felt is added inside for stabilisation.
Velcro down the back edges.
Felt was glued into the foot area to help stop it bunching up.
Now it is ready for the remaining details to be made.
The details on the leg will be made as separate piece that attach with Velcro. |

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 08/05/14, 03:57 pm |
| Some more progress has been made on the shoes for Bit Cloud.
Grey strips are made as tubes with felt in them.
Velcro at the ends attaches them to a brown strip. This is made from a covered piece of foam.
The placement of the Velcro was slightly off. It had to be attached right at the start before sewing into a tube. Because of that it does not attach very securely and sticks out as a result of the curve of the shoe.
I am thinking of remaking that part with the Velcro closer to the edge (Yellow). In hope it will sit flatter.
Also add some additional Velcro to attach to the shoe (Green). |
