| Welcome to my Sketchbook.
Below you will find a current list of the cosplay I have done followed by a list of upcoming plans and possibilities. After that are many pages of progress updates that I add while I am working on costumes. I have created this with the hope of it being useful to people to inspire and give ideas on how to make costume pieces. Go to the end of the last page to see the latest update.

Cosplay History
Here is a list of all the Cosplay I have made and brought over the years. I went and worked out the time period it was made over and what conventions each one has been to. I worked out the dates I made each one from looking at when progress photos are taken. Should be accurate to within a few days.

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 29/09/12, 03:32 pm |
| Lets start off with something exciting:
Ken from Katekyo Hitman Reborn. I brought it from eBay as I did not really fell like making it and am already booked up with other Cosplay projects. Since tails are one of my newest favourite things I have got one for Ken. As was shown at the end of one episode where Ken and his friends took over the ‘Haruharu Interview’ section.
~ ~ ~
My main project right now is Making Pokemon Ranger Lunick.
Right now I have been working on the shoes. I was asked previously how I made shoes so here is a run-down on how I have made these ones.
These shoes will be made as covers that fit over some shoes I brought at the start of the year and attached Velcro around the top edge of the sole. This allows different covers to be fitted for different characters. Saves a lot of space and weight, which is especially important when travelling to overseas conventions.
The Velcro is attached with sewing tacks into the sole. I put the loop side on the shoes so they don't try and attach to everything they touch. The hook side goes on the covers as they can be folded shut to keep it from hooking onto things.
I started off with a pattern I have been using for a while. It something I came up with and has two sides the same joined by a strip down the center.
I am using nylon fabric for all of this so it matches the other parts of the costume I made.
Once those three base parts are sewn together. The first part attached to this is the 'toe part' which is made from a strip attached to a half circle. These shoes I am making come up past the ankle so a rectangle of fabric is attached to the top edge. Before attaching this a few darts are sewn into the lower main part to narrow the opening.
Red then white parts attached to the back. These are made from stiff interfacing with the fabric stitched over it.
White strip attached around the bottom edge and red strip (felt in it) attached down the top
Red parts for the sides are made with felt in them
Red parts pinned in place then sewed on
I worked out the height for the top of the shoe and stitched it over with a strip of felt inside to make it hold its shape. Then made a black strip with felt in it and attached it around the top edge
In this case there is no opening along the top (where the shoe laces normally go) so I made the opening at the back (for getting feet in and out). This back opening is held closed with Velcro.
The end of the white strap thing over the top of the foot is secured at the outside edge with Velcro
Finally white shield shaped parts are attached to the front. It is made with fabric over felt.
Finished!
The white bottom edge might need to be folded under a bit at the front as at the moment it goes under the shoe sole and will probably get ripped and dirty.

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 01/10/12, 11:50 am |
| ^ Thanks. Great to hear it can help <---> I'll move and expand on a bit of stuff from the General Progress Thread (so much nicer without spoiler tags :- )
I have made Brick from Powerpuff Girls Z.
I decided to make Butch's (green) jacket too as a practice and since I can use green fabric left over from Syaoran.
Jacket took quite a while to make. I wanted to get everything perfect. I made a pattern with Naruto jacket pattern as a starting point. The sleeves are wider and the body is straight not tapered. To give the large appearance.
I made a prototype of one side of the jacket from scrap fabric to make sure the join between colour and dark where the sleeve meets the body, would actually line up. There is a small tolerance because the join will be covered by yellow strip. I forgot to cut out he red collar, lucky there was a scrap left over just big enough (if you can count no seam allowance as big enough :-[ ) The red fabric is what was left over from Brendan's (Pokemon Trainer) jacket. The yellow parts are all made from strips of fabric sewn on with the edges folded under.
The yellow strip is continuous from sleeve across the back and down the other sleeve (1.7m).
Any stitch going off the edge was unpicked and re done.
Because I could not get a yellow zip in the right length I got a white one and have put yellow strips to cover it.
Getting collar right took a while (Also took a while to come up with a way to do it that is close to the reference image and not impossible to make).
The top of the zip needs to be covered. So on one side the zip goes between the sides of the collar like normal. On the other side the zip is behind the collar so the end can extend past the zip. I put a strip of felt in the collar to hold it right.
There is a strap around the collar. In the reference there is an impossible looking buclkle thing where the strap comes out on top from both sides. I found a 'normal' buckle thing to use instead which can be unclipped (quite important).
Because the collar has 'belt loops' I put a strip around its top edge to make it tidy.
It turned out very nice but the collar could have been a bit wider.
Trousers. It looks like there is a zip around each leg. I put on a yellow strip instead.
There was not much dark fabric so had to cut out everything in one go to ensure it would fit. Not enough to make the back of the pockets so I used red, which looks good.
I brought a red belt for the trousers.
I brought a red hat which will needed a black bit added to the front. I could not find a red hat that had a red front (hours of searching on eBay).
I made shoes covers. Started off with my ‘standard pattern’
Attaching the Velcro around the inside edge of the cover.
White part and top band attached.
Red band and 'wheels' (made from felt) attached to finish them off.
I made Brick’s weapon, Spitball Straw.
I made it from some red power cable. It was a single core type with thick copper strands. Which made it very stiff. I pulled out all the strands except one. I was then able to bend it into the heart shape. The corners are a bit of a mess but there is not much that can be done about this. I cut the ends of the wire below the ends of the insulation and pushed blutak into the ends.
Pwn3d at Melbourne Anime Festival 19 August 2012. (I used the gloves I got for Pokemon Trainer Red. Black gloves are too generic to make yourself)
I also ate Pocky for the first time ever …
Not bad but I don’t really see what all the fuss is about. |

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 16/10/12, 01:49 pm |
| ^ Thanks ~ I never thought my shoes would be Legendary. I just wanted to make the difficult task easier, came up with a plan and stuck to it. ====
As you know from the first post, I am making Lunik, a Pokemon Ranger.
Jacket I used the pattern I made for my Naruto Jackets as a starting point.
Attaching collar. It has two pieces of felt in it to make it sturdy. Probably could have been made thicker but it gets difficult with non stretch fabric as the inside edge will wrinkle.
Pokemon Ranger Rank badge. I made it rank 10. As seen in the manga.
The individual parts are made slightly raised with felt under them.
Sleeve ends finish with white band.
Complete
The yellow waist band and triangle parts are made the same way as the collar but without any felt in them.
Pants Fairly standard. To get the yellow to look right it had to be two layers with an additional layer of black under it to prevent the folded under edges from showing through (Same as on the jacket).
Expanding side pockets.
Top Balck and white coloured worn under the jacket. Fairly well fitting. I made a pattern from a standard t-shirt.
I had to make this twice because the first time I made it the neck opening was too wide. I tried to make it narrower by adding in a circular strip of fabric that worked but looked messy so I decided to make it again from scratch. It turned out much better this time.
Gloves They are made from a hand outline shape for the top and bottom with strips sewn between the fingers.
These turned out better than I expected, remembering previous glove making bad experiences.
I picked Nylon Fabric to make most parts as it give a nice 'sharp' appearance without any fluff.
Wig and Headband I brought a blue wig and made a red band to go around it. The band joins at the back with Velcro.
The hair at the front of the wig goes downwards. This makes it difficult for the band to sit there without a gap. To allow the band to sit on over the edge of the wig I removed the first three strips of hair and re-attached them stitching upwards.
I then attached the to the front of the wig with a few hidden stitches. This will stop it falling down or shifting and allows it to be looser for better comfort.
All done!
Seem to have run out of time to make the cell phone like thing he has on his waist… Pokemon Rangers don’t use Pokeballs, so instead I have this little guy:

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 02/12/12, 01:19 pm |
| I have been doing a bit of Cosplay stuff over the last month or so. I’ve been making Pokemon Ranger Kellyn Cosplay for a friend.
I made the gloves for it when I was making mine for Lunick (To get the annoying parts out of the way). Inner top
Shorts
Jacket, started but not so much progress yet.
Main outer part and lining has been make I used a suit jacket sleeve shape to attempt to get the shoulders to stick up nicely.
| |
Made a small start of Zaji. (Above Right)
Trousers. I still have to finish the bottom edge.
| | Things are coming together for me to start on Lucario Gijinka. A nice drawing has been provided so I can get all the details correct.
http://fav.me/d5lkqkb
Some materials have been appropriated.
Fabrics for pants and jacket.
Silver is for making the larger spikes. Fur, yellow for jacket collar, blue for ears and tail.
Spiky things.
Now I’ve got to start making it…
I set a goal to finish the Pokemon Ranger Jacket and finish Zaji and Lucario’s pants before Christmas. |

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 12/12/12, 12:53 pm |
| I’ll Try to update this every one to two weeks.
I finished making trousers for Zaji by making and attaching the cuffs to the bottom of the legs.
I thought everything was perfect but then I noticed the trouser legs do not billow out around the cuffs like I expected (hoped) they would.
So I think I will have to do something about that. My current Idea is to remove the cuffs, open up the inside leg seams about half way and add in a long narrow triangle shaped piece of fabric. That should help the legs flair out more.
Will try that when motivation strikes… (Re-doing stuff is a pain)
I made a start on Lucario Gijinka. Starting with trousers. A bit difficult going but results are ok so far.
I discovered that working with vinyl type fabric is not very easy. Not being able to pin anywhere other than on seam allowances and other hidden places makes things difficult. So I used tape to help hold some parts.
First I copied and modified my trouser pattern for the different black and blue sections.
Those parts were the first to be joined. Then the zip at the front. This got messed up requiring some un picking. Not very good as it leaves holes.
Back pockets. (Ended up a bit narrow, maybe I should have checked that first)
‘Knee Pads’
These took a long time to attach correctly.
Also making those straps for the sides was annoying. So that makes me wonder about how I can make all the longer straps. I want to do it by covering a felt strip with fabric. But now I am unsure how I can do that without it wrinkling up.
So far I have this
I have been told they need to be tighter in the thigh area. Not sure how to go about that yet but I guess the inside leg seam could be taken in a bit. Next I have to fit the waistband and finish of the bottom of the legs.
I think the next step will be to have a go at designing the boots for Lucario. They are probably going to be the most difficult part to make and get right. |
