| ^^^ Thanks
He suggested I cosplay it in the first place, has seen the progress photos, final photos and is excited about getting to see it in person in a little over 2 weeks (at Melbourne Supernova).
-----------
Zaji shoes are finished!
The were a bit boring so I have added a opening down the side and some straps to wrap around. To make them nearly as good as other shoes on Letter Bee.
Now I have to Make Pokemon Ranger Kellyn shoes, for my friend (who happens to be the person who did the Lucario Gijinka design). I should have made them ages ago but I got side tracked with Lucario.
Made a bit of a start...
This might be interesting because I have to make them fit some shoes that a re a bit larger than mine and I don't have access to them. I just have a few measurements. |

| I made a hat for Zaji.
Prototype
Enlisting expert help, I started on the final version.
Bee design on one of the four panels.
Interfacing was required on the back to hold it flat.
Four main panels stitched together then yellow strips attached.
Peak. It is made with felt and interfacing in it.
Band With felt in it. The design was based around the length of the felt in this bad. I had made that felt strip the correct length for the circumference of the hat. Band is attached.
Complete:
Now working on the scarf.
I cut out fabric using roller cutter. It needs to be long so I had to make it from three strips.
Flat Fell Seam to join the strips. This won't leave mess on the other side.
Edges folded over and sewn. (Took ages to do this)
Now the ends needs to be finished off.

| Zaji scarf is finished.
I made narrow strips to go on the ends and attached these into the seam so there are no raw edges showing.
I finished the Pokemon Ranger Kellyn shoe covers for a friend.
These shoe covers are a bit different to the other ones I have made. They are designed to be attached to normal shoes with out needing to modify the shoes. They are held on by straps that go under the sole and Velcro on the other side.
The straps have vinyl strips on them to help prevent slipping when walking. (I hope that works) I don't have access to the shoes they are intended for so Velcro has allowance for size variation. (I have a few measurements though)
The opening at the back also uses wide Velcro to allow some adjustment.
The band around the bottom edge is fixed in one place along the back edge of the band and the padding in it is loose. This allows it to be rolled up and down to suit the height of the shoes it is covering and it allows other fixing like pins to be coved, if they are required.
There is a strip of felt all the way around the inside of the bottom edge that will help prevent the edge of the cover from pulling upward in places between the straps that are holding it down.
I hope they will fit... I'll find out in one week |

Almost forgot, A little while ago I made a Tie for Zaji
It was a bit easier than I was expecting. It is a strip of fabric sewn into a tube.
Now I have started working on Zaji's jacket. I got this pattern.
I made a prototype from it.
It seams they have put a lot of effort into making the instructions difficult to follow. It turned out ok, ish. Looks like it can be made to work. My first time making a collar like that and first time I put in that kind of sleeve. (Lucky that Kyokyogirl was able to show me how to do it) I had to make the sleeve a bit longer and wider. Everything else seemed it would be ok as is, just cut the body a bit shorter.
I started making it today. Got the collar parts mostly done.
Now I will put the yellow strips on it then start on the sleeves. They will need lots of yellow lines around them. |

| Zaji Jacket is finished.
I made button holes for the first time ever.
The pockets are pretend.
Sleeves have lots of lines on them.
One end of the yellow strip is sewn into the seam the other is folded under itself.
Next I need to make a Prop Gun
I have come up with a design on paper. This is going to be transferred onto many pieces of cardboard that will be glued together. So far, I have done the easy part of cutting some plastic pipe to make the barrels.
The shape of the handle might need a bit more work. |

| ^ I didn't intend to put piping on the sleeves (that I can remember). Seemed like more hassle than it was worth. There are time limits and many more things to make!

Taking shape:
Needs a bit more shaping then the bits can be glued together.

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 11/05/13, 03:10 pm |
| New plan. I remade all the inner parts of the cardboard so that the handle is shaped better and part between the barrels is not separate.
Base shape all glued together.
Edging glued on.
Additional shaping parts and barrels glued on. Start painting the black parts.
The brown parts are finished by gluing on fabric. For two reasons: It nicely covers over the rough steps in the cardboard and I don't have brown paint. Some circle things made from ice-cream container glued on.
Needs a blue jewel like thing.
I had this crazy idea about casting it. I found some plasticine, heated and moulded it into a rectangle. Proceeded to press a ball bearing into it to make hemispherical indentations. I used a strong magnet to pull the ball out with out distorting the indentation.
When I was happy with one, I filled it with PVA glue.
(This is what it looks like after 24 hours of drying) I don't know how long this will take the dry, or if it can even dry fully because air can't get to it easily. Will have to wait and see what happens. For now I'll consider this prop finished.

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 14/05/13, 03:51 pm |
| I was suppose to spend the weekend making a bag for Zaji. I started it about 4pm on Sunday.
Luckily it escalated quickly and was mostly finished off on Monday evening. Pattern invented and parts cut out.
Straps and detail attached to the ends.
Sew in zip at the top edge of the sides then assemble all the parts. Shoulder Strap.
Finished
There is a polycarbonate sheet in the bottom for a bit of rigidity and felt glued to the sides.
My glue casting has turned out ok. The surface is a bit rough, which I did not expect. I coloured it with a permanent marker.
Ready to be glued on to the side of the gun. |

| ^Thank you (I think the camera smooths over the rough bits and makes everything look better than reality)
The bag looks like it is going to need some reinforcing along the edges of the zip to stop it caving in or bending out to one side when it is hanging by the straps. Hopefully gluing some strips of felt along the inside will help.
The final thing to make for Zaji is a gun holster.
It looks like a large pencil case strapped to his leg. It also looks too small to fit the gun.

| Zaji's gun holster is finished now. It turned out mostly ok. Some corners are a bit rough.
I put the rest of the decoration on the gun.
The thing I cast out of glue has a wart like texture.
Zaji pretty much finished. I need photos. As it was dark and raining outside I decided to haul out some lights from the back of a junk filled wardrobe and set them up for indoor photos.
Key light on the left side with fill from the bottom and right. Camera far back as practical to help get a flatter perspective and to increase depth of field (Surprisingly the lights were not bright enough to stop the lens down). Low camera angle to work with the light and my preferences. This worked quite well.
Full processed photos here: http://fav.me/d65s8t1 http://fav.me/d65s8tx http://fav.me/d65s8rw
In taking these photos I found the top edge of the shoes likes to sag down, that will need some stiffening. Also the scarf likes to do its own thing and the bag strap likes to pull on the jacket. These things will probably need pinning in place.
Now I an sourcing materials for next projects which will probably be done in parallel.

| Oops, forgot to update this for a while. Not very much progress with new things lately though.
Armageddon Hamilton and Wellington were achieved
Hamilton: Kiba (Kiba) and Brick (Powerpuff Girls Z)
Wellington: Lucario Gijinka, Ash (Pokemon) and Zaji (letter Bee)

I have started making trousers for Sky Jack
The first step was to modify my trouser pattern to make it a bit more fitting. I made a prototype to test the altered pattern. It was assembled in a hurry so ended up partly inside out.
But severed its purpose.
Start with the actual fabric Pockets and Zip installed
Sadly went a bit wonky doing the final top stitching around the zip and hit the metal part at the bottom of the zip breaking needle. Can't really un do it with out leaving holes in the fabric.
Mostly assembled. I hope this green colour is bright enough
Might make the legs a bit narrower. Next is attaching waist band and finishing off bottom edges.

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome By Paul. 29/06/13, 10:24 am |
| One reason I have not made much progress recently is because I remembered I need to make some business / cosplay cards:
There was excitement around making them on a thread here late last year but I never got around to making some of my own until now.
Trousers for Sky Jack are finished.
Now I have started working on the green shirt.
I created a pattern and made a prototype from it.
It mostly turned out ok. The collar was not tall enough and the facing down the front was not quite wide enough. I adjusted the pattern and now it should be ready to use with actual fabrics. The inside of the collar and facing needs to be dark green.
I have started making the stars to attach to back and sleeves.
Three layers of yellow where need on the small ones to stop the red showing through.
Pockets in the process of being created
Now I am ready to cut out the parts and attach the details then assemble it. |

| First off, can't wait to get your coscard!!! Those pants... I have no doubt that you'll blind everybody should you step into direct sunlight, lol. The stars look really good, and if I haven't said I'm jealous of your amazing pattern making skills before, then I'll say it again: STAHP BEING SO TALENTED!!!!! |

| ^ Thanks ---- Some more progress on the shirt for Sky Jack. Pockets on the front are complete, except for the yellow buttons.
Stars have been attached to the back and sleeves. Main parts have been joined together and the dark green inside collar and facings are in the process of being installed
But for now, this is happening:
So there won’t be any more progress for a few days. Links to photos are going up here: www.oldvcr.tv/events |

| Anime Expo in Los Angles was achieved. 7 Different cosplay. I wonder if that number can be topped next year
| Ash Day 0 | Brick Day 1 | Lunick and Ken Day 2 | Lucario and Kiba Day 3 | Zaji Day 4 |
It is nice going to a convention that is open 24 hours a day. You don't have to wait for it to open in the morning and you can lave when you want to. Get a close Hotel and changing cosplay during the day is no problem.
Now the fun is over, back to cosplay work. I got some plastic snaps and tool for installing them for the buttons on Sky Jack shirt.
It was very cheap on ebay. It works well though.
Pockets are now complete
I will put buttons down the front as well even though they are not shown.
I made a belt for the pants. I don't have any belts with a buckle so had to research how it works and how it is installed :- )
Using a buckle seems to be rather inferior method of doing up a belt because you have defined eyelet positions and no other choice.
Collar on the shirt is now finished off
Lining is installed.
Next the sleeve ends and waist need to be finished off
After considerable hunting fabric to make Vocaloid Len cosplay has been obtained.

| I got some new sewing needles. My one was worn out.
Nice useful packaging.
Work on Shirt for Sky Jack
Cuffs made and attached
Waist band attached. Decided to have belt loops and a belt separate. Instead of just sticking a buckle on the font.
Belt made.
Finished
I put yellow snap buttons down the front. It is not clear what should be used to close the front.
I made the scarf
Now I have started making the headband / ear warmer thing.
Had a bit of trouble making the straps with out them wanting to twist up. It was due to the fabric being slightly pulled while sewing. That was overcome on the 8th attempt and now I have continued with the main part.
Some felt needs to go in it to give it some 'body' along with some elastic and the top edge stitched down. The ends will be joined at the back with Velcro. Also need to make a yellow star to go on it. |

| ^ Thanks
The fabric I used for the scarf is a bit of the stuff I got for making Len cosplay seen in the previous post. It is Polyester Dazzle (Probably has a technical name?) used for sportswear. It is a knit.
Unfortunately it is very difficult to get hold of 'by the yard'. I bought it at a wholesale place (5 yards minimum) in the LA fashion district, after asking a several store owners in the area. This place seem to have it https://www.fabricline.com/ but not sure if thy ship to NZ and their photos and descriptions did not give me enough confidence to try placing an order. |

| Headband is finished
Yellow star is made. It has a pin to attach it.
Boots for Sky Jack have been made.
They follow the same methods of other shoes I have made.
Foot part.
Leg part. Velcro attaches the cover to the shoes and allows the back to open for getting feet in and out.
I think it might need a bit of felt glued to the inside around the back half of the foot to help the fabric hold the shape and not wrinkle up so much.
For now I have started to make gloves. |

| Good Progress for Sky Jack
Gloves:
Basic shape from tracing around my hand. Strips sewn between the fingers and the finger ends are folded in and stitched down.
Opening on the back of hands is cut and edges finished. Sides sewn up.
Band added to the wrist area.
Snap fastener secures the band and allows hands to get in and out.
Goggles:
Polycarbonate cut out for the lens. I painted them yellow. I tried to mix a bit of red to make it orange but it went quite brown. So decided to stick with yellow.
The frames are made from gluing strips of cardboard around the edges of the lens. and holding it in position while it dries.
Glue around the edges of the frames give a cleaner finish and hide the cardboard edges.
Frames are linked with wire and makes a place for the strap to join on.
Cardboard parts cover the links and where the strap joins on.
Strap is attached.
