^^^ Thanks

He suggested I cosplay it in the first place, has seen the progress photos, final photos and is excited about getting to see it in person in a little over 2 weeks (at Melbourne Supernova).

-----------

Zaji shoes are finished!
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 300_2_by_paul375-d5z76bz
The were a bit boring so I have added a opening down the side and some straps to wrap around. To make them nearly as good as other shoes on Letter Bee.

Now I have to Make Pokemon Ranger Kellyn shoes, for my friend (who happens to be the person who did the Lucario Gijinka design). I should have made them ages ago but I got side tracked with Lucario.

This might be interesting because I have to make them fit some shoes that a re a bit larger than mine and I don't have access to them. I just have a few measurements.

I made a hat for Zaji.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 370_by_paul375-d5zru3n
Prototype
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 350_by_paul375-d5zrtjx
Enlisting expert help, I started on the final version.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 351_by_paul375-d5zrtjz
Bee design on one of the four panels.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 352_by_paul375-d5zrtk3
Interfacing was required on the back to hold it flat.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 353_by_paul375-d5zrtk6
Four main panels stitched together then yellow strips attached.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 354_by_paul375-d5zrtkb
Peak. It is made with felt and interfacing in it.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 355_by_paul375-d5zrtke
Band With felt in it. The design was based around the length of the felt in this bad. I had made that felt strip the correct length for the circumference of the hat.
Band is attached.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 356_by_paul375-d5zrtkf
Complete:
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 357_by_paul375-d5zrtki
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 358_by_paul375-d5zrtkk

Now working on the scarf.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 371_by_paul375-d5zru8c
I cut out fabric using roller cutter. It needs to be long so I had to make it from three strips.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 400_by_paul375-d5zrtkl
Flat Fell Seam to join the strips. This won't leave mess on the other side.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 401_by_paul375-d5zrtkn
Edges folded over and sewn. (Took ages to do this)
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 402_by_paul375-d5zrtkq
Now the ends needs to be finished off.

Zaji scarf is finished.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 381_by_paul375-d609sti
I made narrow strips to go on the ends and attached these into the seam so there are no raw edges showing.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 380_by_paul375-d609stf

I finished the Pokemon Ranger Kellyn shoe covers for a friend.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 382_by_paul375-d609stl
These shoe covers are a bit different to the other ones I have made.
They are designed to be attached to normal shoes with out needing to modify the shoes. They are held on by straps that go under the sole and Velcro on the other side.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 383_by_paul375-d609stm
The straps have vinyl strips on them to help prevent slipping when walking. (I hope that works)
I don't have access to the shoes they are intended for so Velcro has allowance for size variation. (I have a few measurements though)
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 384_by_paul375-d609sto

The opening at the back also uses wide Velcro to allow some adjustment.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 385_by_paul375-d609str

The band around the bottom edge is fixed in one place along the back edge of the band and the padding in it is loose. This allows it to be rolled up and down to suit the height of the shoes it is covering and it allows other fixing like pins to be coved, if they are required.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 386_by_paul375-d609sts
There is a strip of felt all the way around the inside of the bottom edge that will help prevent the edge of the cover from pulling upward in places between the straps that are holding it down.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 387_by_paul375-d609stt

I hope they will fit... I'll find out in one week [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 755823

It all turned out ok for the commissioner and the commissionee. Now we have some nice blurry photos to remember the occasion.

[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 395_by_paul375-d62xsb2

Almost forgot, A little while ago I made a Tie for Zaji
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 390_by_paul375-d62xrbp
It was a bit easier than I was expecting. It is a strip of fabric sewn into a tube.

Now I have started working on Zaji's jacket. I got this pattern.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 391_by_paul375-d62xrbs
I made a prototype from it.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 392_by_paul375-d62xrbv
It seams they have put a lot of effort into making the instructions difficult to follow.
It turned out ok, ish. Looks like it can be made to work.
My first time making a collar like that and first time I put in that kind of sleeve. (Lucky that Kyokyogirl was able to show me how to do it)
I had to make the sleeve a bit longer and wider. Everything else seemed it would be ok as is, just cut the body a bit shorter.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 393_by_paul375-d62xrby
I started making it today. Got the collar parts mostly done.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 394_by_paul375-d62xrc3
Now I will put the yellow strips on it then start on the sleeves. They will need lots of yellow lines around them.

Zaji Jacket is finished.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 310_by_paul375-d641ct0
I made button holes for the first time ever.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 311_by_paul375-d641ct5
The pockets are pretend.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 312_by_paul375-d641ct9
Sleeves have lots of lines on them.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 313_by_paul375-d641cta
One end of the yellow strip is sewn into the seam the other is folded under itself.

Next I need to make a Prop Gun
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 314_by_paul375-d641ctc
I have come up with a design on paper. This is going to be transferred onto many pieces of cardboard that will be glued together.
So far, I have done the easy part of cutting some plastic pipe to make the barrels.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 315_by_paul375-d641cte
The shape of the handle might need a bit more work.

^ I didn't intend to put piping on the sleeves (that I can remember). Seemed like more hassle than it was worth. There are time limits and many more things to make!

Taking shape:

Needs a bit more shaping then the bits can be glued together.

Re: [Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome

New plan. I remade all the inner parts of the cardboard so that the handle is shaped better and part between the barrels is not separate.

Base shape all glued together.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 319_by_paul375-d64uwkp
Edging glued on.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 320_by_paul375-d64uwkt
Additional shaping parts and barrels glued on. Start painting the black parts.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 321_by_paul375-d64uwkw
The brown parts are finished by gluing on fabric. For two reasons: It nicely covers over the rough steps in the cardboard and I don't have brown paint.
Some circle things made from ice-cream container glued on.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 322_by_paul375-d64uwl0

Needs a blue jewel like thing.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 325_by_paul375-d64uwld
I had this crazy idea about casting it. I found some plasticine, heated and moulded it into a rectangle.
Proceeded to press a ball bearing into it to make hemispherical indentations. I used a strong magnet to pull the ball out with out distorting the indentation.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 323_by_paul375-d64uwl5
When I was happy with one, I filled it with PVA glue.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 324_by_paul375-d64uwl8
(This is what it looks like after 24 hours of drying)
I don't know how long this will take the dry, or if it can even dry fully because air can't get to it easily. Will have to wait and see what happens. For now I'll consider this prop finished.

I was suppose to spend the weekend making a bag for Zaji. I started it about 4pm on Sunday.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 332_by_paul375-d658c0l
Luckily it escalated quickly and was mostly finished off on Monday evening.
Pattern invented and parts cut out.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 326_by_paul375-d658bcz
Straps and detail attached to the ends.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 327_by_paul375-d658bd0
Sew in zip at the top edge of the sides then assemble all the parts.
Shoulder Strap.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 328_by_paul375-d658bd1
Finished
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 329_by_paul375-d658bd4
There is a polycarbonate sheet in the bottom for a bit of rigidity and felt glued to the sides.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 330_by_paul375-d658bd7

My glue casting has turned out ok. The surface is a bit rough, which I did not expect.
I coloured it with a permanent marker.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 331_by_paul375-d658bd9
Ready to be glued on to the side of the gun.

^Thank you Smile (I think the camera smooths over the rough bits and makes everything look better than reality)

The bag looks like it is going to need some reinforcing along the edges of the zip to stop it caving in or bending out to one side when it is hanging by the straps. Hopefully gluing some strips of felt along the inside will help.

The final thing to make for Zaji is a gun holster.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 333_by_paul375-d65c78j
It looks like a large pencil case strapped to his leg. It also looks too small to fit the gun.

Zaji's gun holster is finished now. It turned out mostly ok. Some corners are a bit rough.

[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 335_by_paul375-d661101

I put the rest of the decoration on the gun.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 336_by_paul375-d661103
The thing I cast out of glue has a wart like texture.

Zaji pretty much finished. I need photos.
As it was dark and raining outside I decided to haul out some lights from the back of a junk filled wardrobe and set them up for indoor photos.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 337_by_paul375-d661106
Key light on the left side with fill from the bottom and right. Camera far back as practical to help get a flatter perspective and to increase depth of field (Surprisingly the lights were not bright enough to stop the lens down).
Low camera angle to work with the light and my preferences.
This worked quite well.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 338_by_paul375-d66110h
Full processed photos here:
http://fav.me/d65s8t1
http://fav.me/d65s8tx
http://fav.me/d65s8rw

In taking these photos I found the top edge of the shoes likes to sag down, that will need some stiffening. Also the scarf likes to do its own thing and the bag strap likes to pull on the jacket.
These things will probably need pinning in place.

Now I an sourcing materials for next projects which will probably be done in parallel.

I have started making trousers for Sky Jack
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 D5ryo79_by_paul375-d69ufg4
The first step was to modify my trouser pattern to make it a bit more fitting.
I made a prototype to test the altered pattern. It was assembled in a hurry so ended up partly inside out.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 100_by_paul375-d69uf4o
But severed its purpose.

Start with the actual fabric
Pockets and Zip installed
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 101_by_paul375-d69uf4u
Sadly went a bit wonky doing the final top stitching around the zip and hit the metal part at the bottom of the zip breaking needle. Can't really un do it with out leaving holes in the fabric.

Mostly assembled. I hope this green colour is bright enough
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 102_by_paul375-d69uf4y
Might make the legs a bit narrower.
Next is attaching waist band and finishing off bottom edges.

One reason I have not made much progress recently is because I remembered I need to make some business / cosplay cards:
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 340_by_paul375-d6b54n3
There was excitement around making them on a thread here late last year but I never got around to making some of my own until now.

Trousers for Sky Jack are finished.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 341_by_paul375-d6b54ne

Now I have started working on the green shirt.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 347_by_paul375-d6b56aa
I created a pattern and made a prototype from it.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 342_by_paul375-d6b54nl

[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 343_by_paul375-d6b54np
It mostly turned out ok.
The collar was not tall enough and the facing down the front was not quite wide enough. I adjusted the pattern and now it should be ready to use with actual fabrics.
The inside of the collar and facing needs to be dark green.

I have started making the stars to attach to back and sleeves.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 345_by_paul375-d6b54nw
Three layers of yellow where need on the small ones to stop the red showing through.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 346_by_paul375-d6b54o7

Pockets in the process of being created
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 344_by_paul375-d6b54nv

Now I am ready to cut out the parts and attach the details then assemble it.

Stars have been attached to the back and sleeves. Main parts have been joined together and the dark green inside collar and facings are in the process of being installed

But for now, this is happening:

So there won’t be any more progress for a few days.

Anime Expo in Los Angles was achieved.
7 Different cosplay. I wonder if that number can be topped next year Smile
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 357_by_paul375-d6djf3i
| Ash Day 0 | Brick Day 1 | Lunick and Ken Day 2 | Lucario and Kiba Day 3 | Zaji Day 4 |

It is nice going to a convention that is open 24 hours a day. You don't have to wait for it to open in the morning and you can lave when you want to. Get a close Hotel and changing cosplay during the day is no problem.

Now the fun is over, back to cosplay work.
I got some plastic snaps and tool for installing them for the buttons on Sky Jack shirt.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 349_by_paul375-d6djf2m
It was very cheap on ebay. It works well though.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 350_by_paul375-d6djf2r
Pockets are now complete
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 351_by_paul375-d6djf2y
I will put buttons down the front as well even though they are not shown.

I made a belt for the pants. I don't have any belts with a buckle so had to research how it works and how it is installed :- )
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 352_by_paul375-d6djf30
Using a buckle seems to be rather inferior method of doing up a belt because you have defined eyelet positions and no other choice.

[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 Untitled_by_paul375-d5ryo7a
Collar on the shirt is now finished off
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 353_by_paul375-d6djf33
Lining is installed.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 354_by_paul375-d6djf37
Next the sleeve ends and waist need to be finished off
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 355_by_paul375-d6djf3c

After considerable hunting fabric to make Vocaloid Len cosplay has been obtained.

I got some new sewing needles. My one was worn out.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 358_by_paul375-d6eq9ue
Nice useful packaging.

Work on Shirt for Sky Jack
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 359_by_paul375-d6eq9ui
Cuffs made and attached
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 360_by_paul375-d6eq9uj
Waist band attached. Decided to have belt loops and a belt separate. Instead of just sticking a buckle on the font.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 361_by_paul375-d6eq9ul
Belt made.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 362_by_paul375-d6eq9up
Finished
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 363_by_paul375-d6eq9uq
I put yellow snap buttons down the front. It is not clear what should be used to close the front.

I made the scarf

[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 365_by_paul375-d6eq9v1
Now I have started making the headband / ear warmer thing.

[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 366_by_paul375-d6eq9v4
Had a bit of trouble making the straps with out them wanting to twist up. It was due to the fabric being slightly pulled while sewing.
That was overcome on the 8th attempt and now I have continued with the main part.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 367_by_paul375-d6eq9v5
Some felt needs to go in it to give it some 'body' along with some elastic and the top edge stitched down. The ends will be joined at the back with Velcro.
Also need to make a yellow star to go on it.

What fabric did you use for the scarf? I don't think I've seen it before.

As usual, your sewing is so neat!! Really nice touch on the jacket lining.

^ Thanks Smile

The fabric I used for the scarf is a bit of the stuff I got for making Len cosplay seen in the previous post.
It is Polyester Dazzle (Probably has a technical name?) used for sportswear. It is a knit.

Unfortunately it is very difficult to get hold of 'by the yard'. I bought it at a wholesale place (5 yards minimum) in the LA fashion district, after asking a several store owners in the area.
This place seem to have it https://www.fabricline.com/ but not sure if thy ship to NZ and their photos and descriptions did not give me enough confidence to try placing an order.

Headband is finished
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 368_by_paul375-d6gpvyt

Yellow star is made. It has a pin to attach it.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 369_by_paul375-d6gpvz1

Boots for Sky Jack have been made.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 373_by_paul375-d6gpwf7
They follow the same methods of other shoes I have made.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 370_by_paul375-d6gpvz5
Foot part.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 371_by_paul375-d6gpvzb
Leg part.
Velcro attaches the cover to the shoes and allows the back to open for getting feet in and out.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 372_by_paul375-d6gpvzf
I think it might need a bit of felt glued to the inside around the back half of the foot to help the fabric hold the shape and not wrinkle up so much.

For now I have started to make gloves.

Good Progress for Sky Jack

Gloves:
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 385_by_paul375-d6hxdh8
Basic shape from tracing around my hand.
Strips sewn between the fingers and the finger ends are folded in and stitched down.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 374_by_paul375-d6hxcyi
Opening on the back of hands is cut and edges finished. Sides sewn up.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 375_by_paul375-d6hxcyp
Band added to the wrist area.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 377_by_paul375-d6hxcz3
Snap fastener secures the band and allows hands to get in and out.

Goggles:
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 384_by_paul375-d6hxdhc
Polycarbonate cut out for the lens. I painted them yellow. I tried to mix a bit of red to make it orange but it went quite brown. So decided to stick with yellow.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 378_by_paul375-d6hxcz6
The frames are made from gluing strips of cardboard around the edges of the lens. and holding it in position while it dries.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 379_by_paul375-d6hxczc
Glue around the edges of the frames give a cleaner finish and hide the cardboard edges.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 380_by_paul375-d6hxczg
Frames are linked with wire and makes a place for the strap to join on.
[Paul's Sketchbook] Photoblog of Awesome - Page 3 381_by_paul375-d6hxczs
Cardboard parts cover the links and where the strap joins on.

Strap is attached.

So not only do you always boss it out with the gloves and the boot covers, but now you're gunna boss it out with the goggles too... Honestly, I don't know whether to murder you quietly for your mad talent or get down on one knee. I'd say murder you, but then you have to go and be the nicest person alive when I meet you in person... Just please never stop cosplaying, lol.
