Cute and shy or show off nudie pants... gah! Lalala would be totally photobombing and that could be all kinds of fun....

If nudie I need to make a bean shaped body... I have worked on covering a mascot costume before so I'm pretty sure I could make it work....

teeheehee... Are faces going to be solid with cut outs for the eyes? Or will they be scrim so you can see out the whole face and no one can see in? It will make a difference as to whether people would recognise LaLaLa as being nude.. if she's made from fabric like the clothing others are wearing but not the face then it'll not quite match up. But I'm keen to be a show off nudie bum ;)
A soft fabric would be ideal so I can make the body and head and cover them easily :)

I'm also looking at ways to make these transportable so they don't take up all the luggage space ;) Though if the head is hollow it can be used as padding for more squishable items.

lalala it is! 8DDD

any discussion on how to make the face so we can see out but people can't see in would be GREATLY appreciated. i think the extent we got to in this thread was a.) making the face a flap you could lift up if you needed to see and/or b.) using black mesh for the eyes so you could see through anyway.

for the heads, i was thinking making the circular ends detachable by velcro, so you could technically take the whole head apart and lie it flat. but i haven't experimented yet, so i don't know how feasible that'd be... 8(

The cosplayer who did the Niconico douga mascot on Sat (a character made out of cardboard boxes) just used Black poplin to cover the holes. I'm not sure how much visibility she got though.

well we could just use orange/black/red poplin to cover all the facial features, which means you have more places to look out of? (eyes/nose/mouth)

I was thinking about some fabric I have, it's a "flesh" coloured mesh. It's a two way stretch but I have seen some that is finer and stretches 4 ways and can be layered over other mesh/fabric If the faces were made of somehting like that with the solid face pieces then I'd be set to match ;)
Basically I need to make the body and then cover it all in somethign stretchy :)

And yes industrial strength velcro will work really well for the side pieces to connect to the main part of the head. I have an idea on how to secure the head pieces yet make them be able to lie flat in luggage- it would be half way between lacing and sewing. I do it for my Ever After dress: I use a fine ribbon/cors and do spiral lacing. But it is possible to do a ladder stitch which winds up not being visible from the outside.
http://tedsteddytalk.blogspot.com/2009/06/homework-learn-ladder-stitch.html
If you presew the edges with a super long thin cord so that the opening is as wide as it can be. Then you can pull the ends of the cord to close the opening the night before, secure and tuck the ends in, pop the ends on and off you go! You can then either cut the cords to release it to open again for repacking or undo the ends and ease the stitches apart.

I THINK I FOLLOW. SORT OF. i was planning to use handy dandy salad bowls as the ends of my katamari head and just cover them / attach them with velcro but i suppose that wouldn't look very neat. :9

so, do the ladder stitch with like, a drawstring cord?

also, are we going for the poplin thing for the face to see out of?

Could I make a plea for poplin with an over lay of the power net? It means I can cover my entire costume with it and over a stretch fabric that matches the colour of the poplin :)

Yep that's pretty much how it works Lucy :) I can do a photo tute to show the kind of cord that could work once I hunt out the cord ;) It's about the thickness of cord used on those phone decoration things or the loops on lanyards for phones :)

OHHHH okay, i see! a photo tut would be awesome, in that case. 8D it sounds like it'd be a lot easier for those that have to travel a long way.

POPLIN IT IS. the power net stuff, is that the thing they use for embroidery? or am i thinking of something completely different? |D

Powernet is a stretch net but it's quite heavy with tiny holes. It's used in skating/dance costumes to look like flesh- so that you can have those seemingly gravity defying effects. It'll soften the texture of the face so that it matches the soft fabrics of the clothes but not actually be the same.
http://www.fabricandsewing.com/Products/574-power-mesh-net-4-way-stretch-fabric-nylon-spandex-lycra-light-pink.aspx
http://spandexwarehouse.com/product_info.php?products_id=226
That's the real deal but stretch net here is fine. I can happily buy the stuff for myself and get enough for squares for all the faces at the same time. It is so sheer it should not affect visibility for anyone. I guess each square will wind up costing maybe 90c ;) if that- depends on how much per m it is :) Should get about 15 squares per metre if the fabric is narrow and 25 if it is full width.
Also the good thing with this is that if the poplin winds up too opaque you can look at another base fabric under it and it won't affect the uniform look ;) And it won't matter what i use underneath as I cannot use poplin for the body and head, it'll need to be stretchy too.

I highly recommend using heavy duty heat 'n' bond for appliquing the eyes and mouth on.

that sounds awesome!

so, the stretch net for the face/poplin for the facial features? we need to keep it circular as well so it follow the form of the tube, otherwise it'll look straight if it's just stretched over the opening for the face :9 hm.

I'm thinking I might go fabric hunting on Saturday - I don't know how easy it will be to find camo-pattern polar fleece. We are using polar fleece, right? How many meters should I be looking at buying?
