Naruto VS One Piece
Post By Guest. 19/03/09, 10:03 am

Alright, so I've been an HUGE OBESSEION Naruto fan for a couple of years.
But then, after the Shippuden filters, I gave up on Naruto anime. So I sticked to the manga, and then...Thats when I watched One Piece.
I watched it a few years back but didn't see much of it, then after re-watching.
I realized, its better than Naruto ._.

Oh man, not a Vs thing. ;_; These always end in tears.

I do like One Piece more, mostly because I just couldn't get into Naruto (and the Naruto fandom scares me).

But each to their own, right?

Naruto's better.

One Piece is fail.
And so is Naruto.

You see my reasoning?

...Can we not have these kind of threads floating around? I feel we're going to need a new rule about these sort of things.
For now this can stay up, but us moderators are now discussing this issue.
Please do not fight.

I'm against these threads as people who like either series will get offended and people will be sad. D:

The main issue with this sort of thread is people will say things without justifying it - like "SUCH AND SUCH SERIES SUCKS.", as opposed to "I don't really like such and such series because I don't like the genre". You know - actual points of discussion, rather than just spouting off an opinion?

So as I see it at the moment, this topic will stay if it manages to be a discussion. Of the posts here already, here's an example of a constructive post and an unconstructive post:

Constructive wrote:

But each to their own, right?

Unconstructive wrote:

One Piece is fail.
And so is Naruto.

Basically what I'm trying to say is if this topic gets constructive posts, we'll leave it up - but if it gets unconstructive posts we'll take it down. :)

I don't really like either, although I still follow the latest Naruto chappies. I gave One Piece (read the first 100 chappies) a go but it just felt monotone and repetitive (especially the fights), and to a lesser extent predictable. Naruto fluctuates from downright boring (dragging on arcs) to interesting unpredictability (storyline related moments - "LAWLWUTYONDAIME").

I'll also have to favour Naruto when it comes to fight scenes, they just feel more realistic (as realistic as realistic goes anyway) and exciting (as exciting as exciting gets anyway), as opposed to monotonous and predictable. Kishimoto's lines are more appealing to Oda's too, in my opinion.

Post By Keysha-chan. 19/03/09, 06:25 pm

Admins - Thanks for that. Sorry to sound like a stick-in-the-mud, but I've seen plenty of forums go crazy for 'vs' threads when they're really not needed (I've never understood these debates, to be honest, when everyone's built differently with different opinions. It's just as silly as the PS3 Vs Xbox Vs Wii console wars. Let's just enjoy what we like and leave others to enjoy their own?

Kei - Thank you! I must admit, when I said that the Naruto fandom scares me, it's because a lot of the time I come across fans who rather than tell me why they like it, instead feel that they need to defend it to the death if anyone says anything that isn't praise towards it. It's nice to see a well-written response as to WHY it's good over 'it's awesome and everything else sucks' (yes, I've had this a few times), and also explain why the other one is not your cup of tea. Kudos!

Abby - Haha, we had such a Ninja and Pirate year in our flat...although I admit that the ninjas were mutated turtles and not the Ramen-loving variety. Razz

In response to the above, I'm going to say nothing but why I love One Piece. Not anything that's bad about Naruto. Not why one is better than the other. Simply why I love the Manga about Pirates.

Also, mostly, for those who're not sure about reading/watching it, this is (personally) why I found it good...and why I still love it!:

* I started reading One Piece when Chopper first came in (which was the mid-100s, I think), because I wanted to give it a go but he was the character that took my interest. I admit had I read from the START first I don't know if I could have gotten into it as easily...if at all (so it's no surprise there's people above who read quite a few chapters and didn't get into it). Sorta like Final Fantasy games in a way - it's hard to judge it by the story from the get-go. I do think the story gets much better once you go past chapter 100 and they're in the grand line. That's when the adventures get fun, the past ties in with the present more, the story arcs and the battles become epic...and they meet some of the more interesting characters.

* And speaking of characters, I love the wacky style to it. While Oda's style is not THE most overly different in manga and anime (he was very influenced from DBZ, after all) it does break away from some of the stereotypes we have in manga these days. In the very least, not every character...male and female...is beautiful. Heck, Usopp is considered so ugly by manga standards. Razz (but god if I don't find him adorable)

But how can I turn down something as weird as a pirate crew with a Reindeer for a doctor, a chronic liar with a 12cm long nose (yes, official length), and a cyborg that's powered by cola? XD

* Happy pirates - One piece is like a natural Prozac for me too. There's just something about the humor, the happy atmosphere the characters live in, the adventures...it makes me smile and I like having something that lifts my moods like that!

* The devil fruit is a fun concept. Plus, I love the Zoan types. :3

* Lack of death is another thing. It's not that there's anything WRONG with a character dying (it can be very emotional) but Oda's not big on killing off a lot of characters. Pretty much any death in One Piece has been in flashbacks to character's pasts (most of which are very emotional anyway). I also agree with his theory on how killing off a character, than bringing them back later kind of defeats the purpose of them dying in the first place half the time- and it's kind of a move by many story tellers that I'm getting sick of. That's not to say he DOESN'T kill someone, but when it does happen it feels like it has more meaning than manga where there's so many deaths left-right-and-centre (well, asides Death Note? *lol* that would kind of kill the whole purpose!) Oda did surprise us all by killing off one 'character' that not only shocked us but... gosh it made me cry. ;_;

* Lack of romance...okay, I know, it may not seem like a good thing to some but there's plenty of romance in many manga, and this is a Shonen manga...adventure and such. Oda's clearly answered the question of 'will there be romance with the crew members' with the response of 'they love adventure!'
Reason I love this? I'm a very, VERY big supporter on 'love is important, but so is friendship and the love in friendship, so don't ever let that go'. It's nice to see something concentrate more on the love of close friends than who is making out with who.

(although I admit I do love a little Franky/Robin...hehe).

* I love the humor too. It's not for everyone but it's definitely for me. I don't think I've actually laughed out loud reading a manga before - even ones that are supposed to be comedy ones have failed me. Some of the joke are just slapstick/Luffy being stupid. Others are a play on Japanese words (my fave is the Hentai (formation) one and Franky miss-hearing them and think they mean Hentai as in 'pervert'...and are refering to him). Sometimes it connects to little plot points from the past as well (like the amusing character tie-in involving one of the main crew's wanted posters).
Then there's cute little things like Chopper's reverse cartoon peek, and Luffy's constant referring to something being a 'mystery' as his answer if he doesn't understand something.

* The anime...oh man, I'm not even going to TRY and defend it having good animation or anything. I love it, but I'm not the kind of fan that's going to deny that a lot of the time, the art in the anime is pretty bad (or worse than that!). Of course, it's a long-running anime (almost hitting the 400th episode in a few weeks time!) and of course they're rushing out to get episodes out.

However, Toei every now and again employ Nako Tate and his animation team to do an episode (or a segment of fight animation). Tate is, to me, one of the most amazing animators in Japan after the high-class acts like Miyazaki. He lessens the detail and adds to the movement. This is from large amounts of movement from leaps to fights, to small subtle movements in the hair and clothes...even when a character speaks, I've seen him animate different lip movements over a basic up and down mouth flap.

Him and his team also animated the 9th One Piece movie. That film is eye-candy for me!

* Again on the anime - filler. Most long running anime has it, so One Piece does as well. The first filler (Apis arc) was pretty bad...I've not even finished watching it myself, but later fillers...be it a few episodes or an arc, are actually handled very, very well. I think the longest running filler arc was only about 8 episodes, and it was the best one too. Known as the 'G8 arc', many people have called it one of the best fillers of all the anime they watch. The anime team are very careful to try and make a filler that isn't going to affect the main story in any way - just something to wet your appitite and keep you entertained.

I should also point out that Oda has a HUGE say on what goes on in the anime - right down to the voices too. So the original creator gets a lot of say on how the teams handle stuff. He's also written the script for the new up-coming movie and takes 1-week breaks from the manga every 2 months or so to put a bit more time into the project. I'm really looking forward to it!

* Most of the fandom gets along so well - even the yaoi/yuri and hetro shippers. I'm not big on most yaoi or yuri (each to their own, I just don't find it hot or anything, I guess?) but all the slash shippers I've met in the fandom are so darn NICE! Most of the fans are so nice and don't care who you do or don't ship, so long as you enjoy One Piece itself (of course, there are a small handful that aren't so fun and willing to play nice, but not to the degree of past fandoms I've been in...)

* Kappei Yamaguchi and Inue Otani....I could just leave it at that. XP One of the most amazing VAs and also one of the cutest. Infact, I love the whole cast. I think sometimes the bad animation is made up for the great choice in cast.

* Because it's Pirates. I've loved pirates since I was little (Monkey Island games~ Does anyone even REMEMBER those? Razz)

There is more, but...gosh, I've rambled on about this long enough. >_> Of course, there's plenty of bad too. Like I said, the animation in the anime is really lack-luster sometimes, A few of the arcs are so long that they're hard to keep focous on sometimes (Yeah, hello skypiea!), the manga has only JUST recently reached the half-way mark and the humor is definately not everyone's taste. But I still love it. Razz

Now, someone balance this out with good things about Naruto. :3
(or do I just have WAY too much time on my hands? Razz)

EDIT: Oh, and just for the lols: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YphK1rYwGW8
Naruto and One Piece sprites duking it out. It's pretty epic to watch!

Don't think that this thread will get too dangerous, unless somebody gets really angry about it.

Kinda prefer Naruto in a humble opinion.

Thought that One Piece was way over cheesed and kinda of knew that it's going to take Luffy and the others AGES until they find the treasure that they are searching for while random stuff happens in the middle, while it won't take long for Naruto to become Hokage ( Village Leader )

Plus really can't STAND luffy while Naruto is the bomb naruto

But yeah it's all a matter of a opinion..

And was kind of lucky, kind of somehow managed to skip the whole - Naruto Filler Season of Doom back in 06 ..

Though will give the One Piece Manga a try, since love Pirates too- more than Ninjas !!

Seconded! :3

Actually, added onto that is I didn't like his treatment of Sakura (at least, the earlier chapters that I read, I dunno about all the current stuff). She wasn't a fave character but I thought she was cute non-the-less. ^^

I agree with Sasuke being a douche. He's one of the reasons I stopped reading Naruto. Honestly, he's just a whiny, emo, selfish bastard, IMO.

Anyway, I used to be a total Narutard. As in one of those rabid fans that scare people. Then One Piece came. Suddenly, Naruto turned into an annoying bland manga, storywise (how it suddenly revolved around Sasuke and his revenge) and artwise (I mean, last time I looked at Naruto, it's like a children's colouring book Razz).

So yes, One Piece for me. :3 There are plenty of reasons but I love the manga's colour spreads the most. They're so full of life. And movie 6! <3 And oh yeah, Bon Clay! XD

I only just realised this is Ninja VS Pirate. o__o
Lol~ xD

Hmmm... I never really got into One Piece, but then again I've never really given it a proper chance. I saw Luffy's stretchiness and got put off (personally, I just don't like stretchy characters - main reason I never really got into Tsubasa either.)... But then it was explained to me by my friend as to why he is so stretchy. I may give it a chance in the future... Mainly for Chopper - he just looks so cute and awesome! I want to see stuff about his character~ xP

Naruto... I got bored after about 200-300 chapters...
I like their concept of ninjas and their Ninja world... But I got bored of the manga... It just seemed to drag on and on. >.>''
I have to admit though, I like to read fanfiction on certain Naruto pairings and I like to hear what's been happening in Naruto from time to time. Guess after about a year of obsessing over it, the interest never completely left me. ^^''

For me, it's the opposite. One Piece's lines feel more stylized and abstract, cartoony, compared to Naruto's. Which isn't a bad thing per se as it fits perfectly with the story.

I personally prefer Kishimoto's character designs to Oda's. With Oda's designs, it's sometimes hard to distinguish between characters because they look so vaguely similar. eg: Nico Robin and Boa Hancock.

The Naruto fandom is scary, can't disagree there. The massive whinings when comparing Naruto and Sasuke's movepool is the most annoying, to me. But it's most amusing seeing them dissect the smallest details in parts of the story to stregthen their arguments. Hard. Core.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Wishe. I've read from chapter one, have been following it for a few years now, and really just want to see the series end. It's not the most amazing series but it satisfies my weekly action/adventure reading more than One Piece and Bleach. I admit, I'm more of a fan of ninjas, and also a wuxia fan so Naruto instantly appealed to me. Bleach has a nice modern atmosphere, but reckon they don't play it out quite as good. And Kishimoto has a way of storytelling that intrigues you to read more and see what the ending ultimately ends up to be.

I was referring more to the lack of shadings in Naruto. Like this chapter for example: http://www.onemanga.com/Naruto/306/12/

It looks too plain (not to mention lazy), hence the colouring book feel about it. But that's just me.

Yeah, Oda sucks at drawing women. >.< The beautiful ones look more or less the same. But aside from that, I think his other characters are quite diverse and are unique from each other.

I actually didn't mind movie 4. TBH, Movies 1,5, 7 and 8 are my least faves (8 was FAR big a story arc to condense into a movie. I rather liked 9, though. Yes, it has a lot of flaws but I still found it sweet (they put in little bits from the manga that were left out of the original anime version of it) and the art is just...I love it! >__>

Movie 10 is going to be all kinds of awesome~!

wow, first to post in over 7 months.
Nobody will enbd up reading this, but i thoguht i might add in something.
Ok, here goes.
I don't like one peice bewcause of the artist style. I'm one of those horrible people who won't read or watch anything if i don't like the manga'ka or animators style. So one peice is outa the question. I refuse to give it any thought whatsoeva.
I am the biggest and most proudest Narutard and the histry of Narutards. So Naruto trumps in this case. After watching an episode all i want to do is throw a kunai at someone and see if and where it hits. That would be fun. right????

Well.....
I am so Narutard. And I read one peice... But couldn't really get into it.... And like I can't see any ""romance"" in it... I really like pairings/matchings... and One Piece....... Well... It doesn't suck,,, but it's not GOOD... That's just my opinion though... At the moment I think Naruto is so INTENSE!... Well rumors have that NAruto is going to end soon.... And I support Naruto more the One piece ae.. ^^
