first; DAVID BOWIE?!

second; okay so i just read like a billion pages to catch up 'cause i've been all sick and offline and stuff (and that was slight exaggeration, it was more like 4.)

i myself would be keen to have it in wellington- it's still in the north island so they can find it somewhat easier to commute than if it was down south, and it saves people down here flying up like $100 on their plane fare (at least, from dunedin orz;). plus, it's sorta... halfway down the country AND the capital of nz. idk. that's just my 2 cents.

another idea that came to me that i think has already been suggested (i've already seen something like it i think, i have a memory of a goldfish) was like... holding a special concert or something sometime during the night (COMPLETE WITH CHEESY HOLLYWOOD HOSTS, EMMIES, OSCARS? hell i don't know). it could be like a masquerade, but +10000000 cool points.

Wellington would be sensible since it is in the middle and everything. The biggest city is still Auckland, though it depends on cosplayer numbers. I think the poll will clear it all up.
And for Aucklanders concerning money, the naked bus company do cheap bus passes to Wellington and they're even cheaper if you're a student.

COMPLETELY. We totally should, it could be an opportunity for proper skit lengths! I have a few things in mind that wouldn't fit into the lame 2mins Geddon gives us. And we could have little categories just like the oscars haha. And everyone can make speeches! And silly jokes!

We need a proper anime con. I doubt anyone will start one for another few years yet, though. You'd have to be pretty amazing at it to compete with Geddon, and have enough money to loose. But damn, we need one.

The way things are going, it'll probably never get one. Last year marked the largest number of people to leave the country in ten years... Not one person I know from high school is planning to stay after Uni.

Thats sad. I've been around the world and in my opinion, there's nothing "out there" that's a significant improvement on whats here. With the possible exception of higher wages. I LOVE New Zealand.

I plan to go overseas after uni, but that's just because I love to travel and experience other cultures. <strike>and I'm majoring in Chinese/Japanese, so if I never go there, that will be a waste of BA.</strike> New Zealand will always be number one though, and when/if I ever have a family, I'm coming back here...

and as much as I'd love an anime-con in NZ, we've only got 4million people in the country. DX

Sorry, I tend to blame NZ when I get homesick ;_; It's my adoptive country and I do love it very very much, but it's not home, and I'm no kiwi. I can't do the laid back thing haha I always need to be doing something or going somewhere and you just can't here.
Wah I'm normally not this homesick, sorry! MCM/London Expo was this past weekend, and I've been talking to a lot of Londoners and they made me miss it so much ;_;

I plan on going into translating after my BA, but it can be tough, so we'll see.

Sure we're a small country, but I think if we publicise this thoroughly then we may get a decent turnout, which my prompt a professionally organised cosplay con in future years. We are a part of the movement people! Time to let people know Coplay exists!

Cons loose a lot of money in the first few years, and setting one up is very very costly. Competing with Geddon would also take a lot of effort, time and money. Anyone who started one up would have to know a lot about the business, and have worked at Geddon or an overseas con for a few years or more, with extensive knowledge and connections.

It's not as easy as you think...

I think that it would be a mistake for us to try to make a con like the big overseas (even Oz) have. We don't have the cash-flow, we dont have the numbers and we simply can't afford to bring in guests and the like.

My question here is: so what? We can have something that is more suitable for us. We don't HAVE money to lose in our first few years - we shall simply have to arrange everything so that we break even. A user-pays approach should make that easier, instead of the american style thing. We'll figure out how much we can afford, what we can get with it and what we want to spend it on.

We'll be in for a headache or twelve, but we'll get through. :-D
