Better than Raymond E. Fiest who turned his main character in a Mary Sue in the first trilogy and then has to come up with inventive ways to get around this in the subsequent ones.

You mean Pug?Puck? The wizards? I'd say less Stu and more Deux Ex. I didn't notice when I was reading it but it was a loooong time ago. Or do you mean Arutha? Coz he goes kinda ballistic in Silverthorn but kinda ok otherwise.

I mean Pug, and yes, more of a case of Deus Ex. Fiest has to keep given reasons why Pug just can't solve everything.

What? JV Jones?? Violent??I've only read one (Crown of Thorns) and while extremely well written, (until the epilogue...) it was no more than averagely S&S fantasy violent.

oh, her other trilogy- the book of words, i think?- which has the bakers boy, master & fool etc. in it, is pretty awful. and disturbing. it opens with rape.

I adored James Patterson's 'The Jester'
Un,...Mercedes Lackey has already been mentioned, adored her Last Herald Mage trilogy.
I enjoyed Darren Shan back when too.
Also, have read some of (first...six or seven I think) of the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton.
Stephen Leather's 'Birthday Girl' was good.
And I loved Skiffington's 'Day After Forever', brilliant for a fourteen year old!

I dunno, really need to raid the library again soon, that or delve further into my parent's bookshelves like I have been since I was thirteen ish.
