Corset?!

Anyone have any helpful tips for anything to do with corsets?
They look so intimidating.

This isn't really for a cosplay, just want to up my skill points && have always wanted to make a corset. >.<

I really want to try the truly victorian pattern... BUT MEH... I'M JUST PLAYING AROUND FOR THE MOMENT, SO WILL TRY UNDERBUST... I WILL WASTE LESS FABRIC!!!! DUCKEH'S SO SMART && AMAZING. ^^

So I have boning, busks look too scary to touch && I think I have eyelets somewhere...

For anyone who has made one, does THIS TUT look alright to play around with?

I guess what I'm asking is, are there any secret bits that are going to kill me?

Well, you got Kitten - so close, but no cheezburgr. That tute looks fine lol, althought I would always recommend using a pattern - the first one I used (and still use religiously) is a simplicity civil-war era pattern. I can't remember the number off the top of my head, but it's a fashion historian one and also had patterns for a chemise and drawers, and I think a petticoat? I'll check the number later. This pattern is the easiest I've seen, but it did require some tweaking - it was too big for my boobehs.

And to answer your poor ignored question - they're not hard, just time-consuming. And you'll get better with practice. ALSO - stitch your boning down if you use plastic, because if it slides up it stabs you in the armpit and it REALLY HURTS. Also use two layers of fabric, the pretty one for the outside and a layer of heavy non-stretch cotton drill underneath. It's nicer on the skin and makes the corset last longer.

Simplicity 5726 is the pattern. Just do the eyelets first, try it on and modify as needed. And you don't want to tightlace just yet! I can only lose an inch off my waist measurement before breathing becomes a BIG ISSUE. Also, EVERYBODY has boobs in a corset.

P.S - I was demonstrating corset, not boobs. Just remember when you're starting out with corsets, you want to accentuate curves you already have, not focus on getting new ones. First time I wore a steel-boned corset I just about died; I thought after sitting down for a half hour my ribs were going to cave in.

You get that at Erotica? Saw ones with that fabric there but I wanted the flat-across-the-top and there were none left like that only those "hello-these-are-my-boobs" ones.

Bought it from a friend who bought it off TradeMe last year - currently the only steel boned beatie I own. I didn't even look at the corsets at the Expo, I had no monies lol. Yeah, this one isn't supposed to be an underbust, but my torso's too long for it - I get massive muffin-spill at the hip, and my nipples tend to pop over the top. Which, funnily enough, is just NOT a good look!

Yeah, if I was ever to consider dropping 400 quid on any one garment, it would be one of these puppies. They're all hand-made too, which makes them (unfortunately) worth every cent.
