[Kyokyogirl's Sketchbook] Making it up as I go along... By kyokyogirl. 25/09/12, 01:04 pm |
| I guess this will be a bit of a general progress thread, and a nice way to see what others think of what I'm up to ^^
Sooooo...
Currently working on as of 25/9/12:
- Spoiler:
The coat is done:
- Spoiler:
There's five rows of purpose made piping in each of the sleeves. Very, very tedious work. Single welt pockets on the front. I think I could have made these just a bit longer...they seem a bit short compared to the ref pics...even though in the ref pics they only go so high as the top button. Shrug. Didn't know what to put on the passant as you can't see any buttons or anything in the ref pics. Stumbled across some hexagonal yellow buttons which matched the 'bee' theme quite nicely I'm currently working on the pants, no photos at the moment though. Wanted to make them loose but made them a bit too big to start off with lol. So took them in a bit at the waist and now they fit right. Just need to do the bands around the hems then they're done.
Another costume I've been 'working on' is Hit Girl from Kick Ass, but that's been just a pile of awesome fabric for so long I'm not sure it's worth mentioning ^^; I plan to finish Hit Girl for Auckgeddon 2013! Lets see if that happens...

| Thank you ^^ @Seraphik: I'm not too sure...when I do anything with bias I tend to use a million pins to keep it all exactly where I want it. And if it's not straight, er, rage. Then unpick and do it again? |

| Finished the pants today:
- Spoiler:
The shirt and belt do not go with the costume. I'll need to make a shirt that's more fitted at the waist so I don't get the fabric bulging over the waistband of the pants. Not a good look.
Plan to make a tie today. Has to be a cute mini one so it doesn't get seen poking out the bottom of the coat XD |

| Hat finished!
Fully lined and interfaced. I had initially planned to bead the bee design but couldn't find any beads that I liked so fell back to 'plan B' (pun intended). So the bee is applique. I did two layers of cotton poplin so that the design wasn't so see-through. |

| A few detail shots of the coat:
Piping on the sleeves half done. Used a zipper foot to get the stitching as close as possible to the cord.
Hexagonal buttons on the passant.
Back of the coat. There's a dart under the vertical bias binding stripe.
The button holes. Thought my sewing machine was going to give me trouble, trying to sew button holes through so many layers of fabric. But it gave me no trouble. And my button holes are the tidiest I've done in a long time XD
The many, many pattern pieces. |

Re: [Kyokyogirl's Sketchbook] Making it up as I go along... By kyokyogirl. 17/11/12, 10:42 am |
| So today I made a backpack:
A shame I couldn't get a green chunky zip; a navy had to suffice. Same with the strapping: no green available so used black. Only minor details though.
It's made from cotton drill, double layered. I used iron on interfacing and felt (but not together) to strengthen the backpack and help it keep it's shape. There is a pocket sewn on the inside of the back panel where a piece of stiffened felt has been inserted, again to help it keep it's shape. In some places my sewing machine wasn't too happy about sewing through all those layers. |

| ^ It's so annoying that piping takes so much effort. But the payoff is worth it.
And yes that is Ash Ketchum's backpack
Gotten a bit bored with Letter Bee at the moment (probably because I can't decide on what to do next). So I'm working on something new instead: Glitch's new outfit from Dance Central 3.
Have been working on the mock-up for the jacket the last couple of weekends. It's turned out to be quite tricky though today it's finally starting to look how I want. Still needs some work before I'm ready to make the real coat. And I need to find some suitable maroon fabric too.
And I can't wait to have a go with using a lace-front wig! |

| Still brainstorming over Glitch's jacket so I did something else instead over the Xmas-New Year break.
Lag Seeing's gun (shindanjuu):
Made from layers of corrugated cardboard, papier mache, masking tape and thin card. It's not quite finished, but there's enough left to do that I can't be assed finishing it at the moment |

| ^ Good luck!
Gun getting closer to finished now, though I still need to figure out what to use for the small gems that are supposed to be on the side. But I'll leave it for now and come back to it.
And just finished the bag. I may put some stiffened felt in it to help it hold it's shape because it will get a bit munted when it's worn.
Made from cotton drill, bias binding, felt and interfacing. |

| Finally found something suitable to use for the gems on the gun. 3D metallic paint. So I painted/dolloped the stuff onto the gun to make the gems.
Now it'll get left alone overnight to dry. |

| Looks awesome! How does it handle i.e. is it sturdy enough? I hadn't really considered it, but now I'm keen on making guns, using the same method. Mind if I pick your brain for more details? |

| Thank you!
It's reasonably sturdy, it should handle a few knocks pretty well. Might not survive getting stood on XD
hm well the whole body of the gun is layers of corrugated cardboard glued together. Used a craft knife to round the edges a bit. The masking taped the outside edges of the gun where the open corrugations could be seen. Then papier mache'd the whole thing. Layers of thin cardboard were used to make the details. |

| Lag's shoes are done!
Base shoes are basic school shoes (I love back to school sales ), then the cover has been glued over top.
So now it's just the scarf and the wig to sort out then the costume is done. |

| So Lag's wig is now done. I ended up buying a clip on pony tail to make the tuft of hair that sticks out of the top of his hat. I cut the ponytail short-ish and removed the clip. The tuft of hair was then sewn to the wig. Before:
After:
With the hat:
I've also made some prop letters to go with the costume.
