Multimedia Vehicle-inspired Character Design Comp (COMPETING) By Lowkey. 28/04/11, 03:06 pm |
| CHARACTER DESIGN COMPETITION! design a character based on a car to win! Production has started but still accepting signups!
The goal of this competition is to take the design and “personality” of a car from the list below and turn it into a character. How you represent your character is up to you: draw a picture, sculpt them, create their clothes and wear them, write a short story about them. You could even do several of the above. Just look at the design of the car for your character's clothing and appearance, and the class, price, period, and use, of the car for your character's personality. Say we were using a Nissan Skyline – design-wise, we might take its distinctive four round tail-lights and carry this as two rings of red around either sleeve of a black leather jacket; a tall collar to echo the shape of the spoiler. Personality wise, we see a popular import, powerful straight from the factory, bit of a street-racing vehicle. You could make a young immigrant who's into risk-taking behavior. Remember: your characters do not themselves have to be car-drivers! It just makes more sense.
In approximately two and a half months all art should have been submitted; it will be compiled into a single thread and CNZ at large will have the option to vote for their favourite piece. The winner will have the choice of $20 EB voucher, a $20 Borders voucher, or a custom teddybear. LATE BREAKING UPDATE: XOrengenOX has offered to sculpt the winner's character out of clay. Unless participation balloons, there will only be one overall winner, and no catagories.
Here are your cars: (It's totally cool for you to use different years of the same model. And while you can chose to use these images as your reference, you can hit up google for more pictures. You also have the option to “modify” the image: say you pick the Mustang but make it white, unrestored, and under a tarp somewhere, or you pick the Mazda (feel free to remove the Veilside bodykit) you could say how it's pink with pony decals.)
VOLKSWAGEN T1 JEEP WRANGLER LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR LP700-4 FIAT 500 FORD MUSTANG MACH 1 CADILLAC HEARSE VEILSIDE MAZDA RX-7 BUGATTI ROYALE (1927)MAYBECH EXCELERO
RULES
- Your character must be human, but if you wish to make them cyborgs or mutants, I guess that's okay, just take it easy.
- You must credit anybody who helps out: you can ask somebody to help you with something (say drawing your idea before you start trying to sew it) but tell us in the finished product.
- There is no set time-setting for your characters: but for logic's sake let's keep it to after the first cars started becoming readily available in say the 1920s – as to the future, go for broke.
- You may enter as many characters as you wish.
EXTRA INFORMATION There is no sign up form but please leave a message after the beep if you're signing up. Take notes of: your car, your modifications to it if those exist, different references if you have them, collabs, and your thoughtpath... why you did things. These will be useful for when you submit it your work. Your deadline is FIRST OF JULY - closer to this date a way for you to submit your work will be set up. The prizes are currently being provided by myself and XOrengenOX, but donations of prizes are greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, you can reach me here, on my Twitter (@lowkkey), my email (lowwkkey@gmail.com) or my MSN (logan_ashadar@wolfprint.hopto.org).
If nobody has any objection, since the winner will be chosen by public vote and not by my judgement, I will also compete.

Yeah, that'd be the way to describe it; or basically like above but even more dramatically like-car-like-driver.
You might take a car with hidden / pop-up headlights and take this on as a droopy-eyed character; a restored classic car as an elderly gentleman, a Prius as frankly a bit of a self-important environmentalist. A Lambo could be gorgeous rich prat. Also the design aspects; buff muscle cars, finding a way to get a spoiler into a costume, a butch front grill &c &c.
Guess where applicable people could mention mods / body work on car as well.
What would be the minimum number of competitors we would want, and should I count as one. |

| .... that actually sounds really awesome.
Would it be a case of we choose the car to design from or will you give one that everyone uses or a range that we can choose from? |

| Excellent question; initially thought pick your own car but maybe a selection would be more interesting, to see how people interpret the same car...? What would people prefer? If lack of car knowledge is a problem, I could always suggest some places to look; I'm learning from the carpr0n Tumblr, for example. |

| I'd like a selection to choose from, I don't know much about cars or even where I can find references to them orz , and I'm always up for a challenge when you're given a specific selection to work from |

Re: Multimedia Vehicle-inspired Character Design Comp (COMPETING) By Rikki-Leigh. 29/04/11, 04:25 am |
| ^ Same. It'd be interesting to see takes of the same car, but would give us more room to move if there was more than one car to choose from, since the same car may inspire some but not others. So a range of cars of all sorts of cars (sports, classics, muscle, etc.) along with what model they are and some specs (in layman's terms so we can all understand). We still get to see different takes on the same car but there is more variety in the inspiriations. |

| I wouldn't say gijinka, since gijinka tends to be anthropomorphic where as this is a (completely) human with its characteristics inspired by the car. |

Duuuuh, not sure what you mean here? You don't have to make the costume, but you do have to produce something to compete, perhaps self-evidently? You can draw your character, or sculpt them, or write a song based on them, or perform an interpretative dance, but something has to be produced.

Uuuh, comp's not even started yet, buddy! That said you've understood the brief & good start, it's just, we haven't started yet. So you'll have time to work on it, I guess? Hopefully I'll have the real start up tomorrow or so, and a deadline of like two months to give folks cosplaying some time. |
