Help with making a dress pattern By catnes555. 16/01/11, 05:53 am |
| Hello~ I'm trying to make a pattern for this dress:
- Spoiler:
But I'm not sure how to go about it, my mum and I have looked for patterns around the place but we can't seem to find one, we tried making a half circle pattern but it doesn't look/sit right.
The only other reference I have is this:
- Spoiler:
Help would be greatly appreciated~~

| For the hat, maybe something like this? http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=56636.0
It looks to me she's also wearing bloomers underneath her dress. You'll definitely need a petticoat to make it poof like that.
For the bow, this is just one of the many tutorials available on the net. http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=184224.0
As for the pink coat thingy... no idea, sorry. |

| @dkleenz
I'll try that~
(Yeah, I'll prolly need that for my Yui cosplay too xDD)
I was wondering, did she use a set pattern or did she draw it up herself?
But thanks a bunch!
@Rolly
Actually I did need both of those links anyway, //sweatdropped (x__x;; I wasn't sure about how to make the hat, but this will help allot~)
Thanks anyway!! |

| The way i look at this cosplay is that there are a few ways you can make this
for the cape, i would suggest Buttericks B4419 view A shorten would be perfect, i have this pattern myself so i know it works
- Spoiler:
If you dont mind style lines then i would remend a princess line dress
- Spoiler:
as you can add flare to the sides of each of the pieces at the bottom to create a full circle effect.
for petticoats the two methods i would think of would be ether the tiered gathered pettiskirt or the less known easyer full circle method
I personally use the full circle method as it reduces bulk at the waist, you dont have to gather so much fabric, as well as i dont have to work out the complex tier widths for lengthing and shorting
the most common length for a petticoat is about 40cm so for example take a "large" piece of paper fold in half, and then in the corner with the fold mark out 6cm around from the fold point to create amost like a pizza slice circle, then from that line mark 40cm out in a circle.
- Spoiler:
this will create a half circle pattern when cut out and unfolded( if you want a full circle just fold the paper twice), i find half easyer, one to save on paper and two you can make the most use of the fabric if you fold it selvge to selvge and lay the pattern on the fold, mark then lay it on the selvge edge, to work out how many tocut out just take the inner/small waist full circle measurement which you can get by running a measureing tape around the first small circle, if its 7cms on a half circle just times it by 2 to get the full circle measurement so for a 100cm hip 14*7=98 ( number doent have to be perfect just close) you can add more you will just have to gather it, This is what i like about the pattern, it's really easy to change and modifie without braking the effect
- Spoiler:
as for bloomers i have the most PERFECT pattern for them, i spent a few weeks devolping a really good roomly pattern with the perfect about of gathers ( I really LOVE bloomers) Plus i am really happy to share the pattern with anyone who wants a copy
- Spoiler:
if you want to do it by youself just take a shorts pattern put together on paper side to side and put a gap in between the sides = to about half of the amount you want to add so say your hips are 100 around * 1.5(or 2 for more gathers) then take away the hip/waist measurement for the pattern your useing and you have you amount to incease by.
- Spoiler:
and just remimber to square down from the crotch point please note this is not unfailable drafting, it is largely based on 3 years of drafting at school and exprence, my pattern was made mostly off the top of my head
I Hope this helps and that it all made sense |

| ^ you are awesome VC
The other suggestions in this thread are fantastic
The skirt in the photo looks a little like it could be a bubble skirt: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=85020.0 if you wanted a cute "pumpkin" shaped skirt |

| ^ ahhhhh, #^.^# thank you Mischa <3
bubble skirts are awesome, I made one for a ball gown and what i found really helpful in puffing out the skirt and keeping the shape was to cut out a few pieces of netting using the top full skirt pattern and to sew these pieces to the underside of the top/front shirt fabric, so in a sense the netting acted like an interfacing while creating "pouf"
I made one once with like 8-10ish layers of netting inside, That created a LOT of pouf, so you could indeed made a dress with a bubble bottom ^.^
