I always thought they were solid tubes of plastic, but I've only ever seen kids ones, so I might be wrong.

Shinrii disconnected a hula hoop for her Motonari Mori cosplay at last year's geddon. Although I believe she actually cut it in half and then added bits to it so it could reconnect. At least that's what I think she did.

In any case, I am pretty sure hula hoops are just a hollow tube of plastic

i'm just thinking... a hula hoop might be too big... HRM. /chinscratch. i've made hoopskirts with no 8 wire before but it's not a great idea as it gets bent easy...

re: the rest of the costume, i'll draw up a generic pattern for the top/gloves and mail it to whoever wants it. the way most people do the rest is to wear sorta bloomer/shorts things that are the same colour as the cousin's legs, tights and flats the same colour too. easy peasy!

regarding hula hoops:
you can get 60cm diameter ones at the warehouse, rebel sport etc... but those are solid plastic (I THINK)
the hollow ones are 1m diameter - which i used for my motonari blades
just stuffed some clear tubing in the ends to assemble/dismantle it

I second/third/whatever that option... it would also be easier to transport/move around in/not break than a hula hoop.
Just walking through doors is going to be a challenge XD

i'm quite keen for the more comfortable/transportable option, but i guess if you want to do a hoop you can. OTL it will be really hard to sit down though, and after having a myriad of uncomfortable mascot costumes i think i'ma stick with the easier thing myself. 8D

I think the stuffed version for transportability - if it's stuffed heavily enough it'll hold its shape like my Kero tail does.

I think that'd be the most effective for people looking at it. Worst comes to worst, if it's too blinding it can always be taken off. XD (the head that is)

I've seen some people make the face like a flap so that it can be rolled completely up out of the way for extra visibility.
