| 714 words in 25 minutes and I have my prologue for Routine Collision. =w=
- Spoiler:
The universe is routine. It is routine to live, as it is routine to die. It is routine for the planets to orbit the sun and moons to orbit the planets and asteroids to mess everything up a little. It is routine for the sun to rise in the east and set in the west, chased by the silvery orb that floats in the night behind it. It is routine for there to be twenty-four hours in a day, seven days in a week, fifty-two weeks in a year. It is routine for living creatures to eat, crap, mate and sleep, just like it is routine for a high school student with scruffy brown hair and a habit for sleeping in just a pair of boxers to roll out from under his bed sheets and onto the floor at seven in the morning as he tries to turn his alarm off. He had been doing it every day since he started school and he didn’t doubt he would continue to do it until he graduated university.
Every day starts the same way; with a large yawn and a few minutes stretching before he stands and stumbles into the bathroom across the hall from his bedroom. He never showers before school, because his parents are still sleeping and his mother would always yells at him for waking her up with the sound of water pelting against hard plastic. Instead, he stands at the vanity and stares at himself in the mirror for a short moment before cold water is splashed over his face and the sleep is gone from his eyes. A wardrobe change, two pieces of toast and a bag slung over his shoulder later and he walks out the door at exactly half past seven, stepping onto the bus that arrives at the bus stop right outside his house five minutes later. He sits on the same seat every day, three rows behind the driver on the right hand side, and listens to the same slow acoustics created by the guitar leaning against a wall of his bedroom.
The bus ride always takes twenty-three minutes. He knows because he timed the journey on his first day of high school, much like he had done on his first day of junior high and elementary, to check the routine of his life. It is always the same, which is why it is routine.
It takes him three minutes to walk to the school campus from his bus stop, and another two minutes to reach the doors of the main corridor. At three minutes past eight, he steps into the corridor and, after five minutes of struggling his way through the crowding masses of students, he arrives at his locker. There’s always a guest waiting for him; waiting to spend the last two minutes taunting him and teasing him before the bell goes and she leaves for class in a smug aura. It takes him one minute to collect the books he requires from his locker, then another two minutes to close his locker and make it to his home room class in time for roll call.
He sits in the back right hand corner of the classroom next to his cousin who has been there since half past seven, finishing off any homework assigned from the previous day. As soon as roll check has finished, the student takes of the pair of rectangular-rimmed glasses that sit on his nose and folds in the arms, placing them on the desk before lying his head down on closing his eyes, enjoying a seven minute long nap before the second bell chimes at half past eight and he walks off to his next class.
His life is just one big routine, like that of the Earth or the solar system or the entire universe. Everything repeats itself and all he can do is just watch and grow bored of the constant repetition. He believes he is a moon orbiting a planet, just waiting for a routine asteroid collision to change his life just that tiny bit to make it just a little more interesting. He never once considered he may be the planet orbiting the sun, where the asteroid collision will do more than just bump him aside.
The rest of my story will be written in past tense. I just wanted to keep the present tense constant for this one part. |

| Chapter one:
- Spoiler:
Chapter one: The shadows— Stasia
There was always something about sitting far above the City, watching the muffled lights in the grey oblivion far below.
But that made me sound far too thoughtful. The roof of Invidia is where I always went to see my two friends, Pai and Lime, although neither of them were there that morning. I sat high above the streets and messed around with my phone, just biding time until my dad, Neo, made me deal with my first business meeting.
Oh the joys of being the heir to one of three giant conglomerates that ruled a city. I rested my elbow on my knee and my chin on my hand and let out a huge sigh. My breath misted in front of me, and suddenly I was aware of how cold it was. I couldn’t yet see the sun over the City walls, so I could tell it was still early. With a huff I lay back, my coppery hair poofed up beside my face and I blew at it boredly. I looked at my phone, and saw that the screen was flickering. That was odd. My phone wasn’t meant to do that. I sat up and frowned at it, hitting the phone with my other hand.
The phone crackled, then died. I swore at the bloody thing and chucked it behind me.
I froze as I heard someone make an “oof” sound.
“…Lime?” I asked hesitantly. There was no reply.
I looked around, but the roof was void of any other people. I shook my head and stood up; it was time to go back down anyways. My dad was probably pacing outside my bedroom, wondering where I was. As I crossed the roof to the door that led to the elevator down, I wondered who, or what, I had heard. I pressed my hand against the panel next to the elevator door, and the light blinked green. I stepped into the elevator and pushed the right button, and as the doors closed, I could’ve sworn I saw someone with white hair falling off the edge of the roof.
“Finally,” Neo exclaimed, seeing me step out of the elevator. The frown line between his eyes was deep on his otherwise young face. The wonders of genetic engineering.
“Hey, dad,” I muttered, following him down the corridor towards the conference room.
“Why aren’t you wearing the Company logo?” he growled, looking me up and down. I rolled my eyes and pulled up one of my long sleeves to show the Invidia armband I wore. The logo was made up of three black, vertical stripes, the middle one long and the other two short, inside of a white octagon.
“I am wearing it, dad.”
“You need it visible!” I sighed and pulled the armband off, then pulled it over my sleeve, glad that it was made of an elastic-type material.
“Happy?”
“No.”
“…Naturally,” I muttered. I’m sure he would have yelled at me then, had we not reached the entrance to the conference room, was the representative for another City’s Invidia was waiting for us. She was a girl who looked not much younger than me, with golden-blonde hair and dark green-blue eyes. She smiled sweetly at me, and I grinned back. Thank god for not being the only teen forced into a job like this.
Neo gave me an inconspicuous nudge with his elbow, and I realized he expected me to introduce us.
“Hey,” I said. “I’m Stasia of Invidia, and this here’s my father, Neo of Ava—“
“Neo of Invidia,” he interrupted.
“A please to meet you,” the girl said sweetly. “I am Ellen of Invidia, and I would love to introduce you to my friend who accompanied me here because he was worried about my safety, but unfortunately he seems to have… wandered off.” Was there some hidden meaning behind that? I vaguely wondered if her friend was the person I had heard and seen on the roof, but then Neo swept us into the conference room.
“It is unusual for such a young representative to be sent,” he started, and the meeting went from there.
Something that might interest you to know, loves, is the history of our world, and the way the New World worked, which we have forgotten the name of after many hundreds of years. A long, long time ago our world became so corrupted and filled with sickness, that the United Nations made a decision to create 15 safe Cities, and fill them with clean people, then destroy everyone else.
And so the Cities were created, and the rest of the world became an uninhabitable wasteland. That was the point in time where the world became a safer, more peaceful place. Each City was the same size, so there were no fights over who had more space, and eventually people forgot what the Old World was like. Companies rose up and took control of the Cities. Some Companies became Corrupt, and thus made the City corrupt. The rest of the Cities would then decide to “erase” that City and then that said City would be destroyed. In my City, no. 6, four Companies took over and began to fight for power:
Invidia, Avarus, Aiyoku and Fierté.
But then my parents, the heirs of Avarus and Invidia, fell in love and, as two people who are in love do, killed their parents and merged the companies so that there was just Invidia.
And then I was born as the first heir of this new Invidia. My best friend, Pai, is part of a project from Aiyoku, and my other friend Lime is a Vertu from Fierté, although Lime isn’t his real name, it’s a nickname that stuck, and I never really found out what his actual name was.
“So… apparently the other Cities are thinking of investigating us?” Lime asked me, as our six feet dangled above the streets.
“They think we’re Corrupt…” Pai muttered from my other side.
“Yeah, they think we’ve caught the sickness of the Old World,” I said. Lime laughed and shook his head.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Not really,” Pai disagreed. “Our City is getting rather Corrupted…” I didn’t know what to say in this conversation, as I wasn’t really allowed to leave the Invidia building, unlike Lime, who was allowed to leave the Fierté as long as the Vertus—er, the army of Fierté—were having a break, and Pai never listened to anything anybody told her. Lime ran a hand through his hair and let out a sigh.
“If you say so, Pai.” The two continued arguing, and I just smiled. Pai, with her silver hair and silver eyes, was never too fond of boys, having grown up with mainly “brothers” and only one “sister”. She was part of a cloning project being performed by Aiyoku, although it was very hush-hush, and even she wouldn’t tell me much about it, apart from the names of her “family”. Lime, on the other hand, was a complete wuss when it came to girls, except for Pai and me, as he’d practically grown up with us. And possibly because Pai had never acted much like a girl in the first place. He met Pai and me a while after he joined the Vertus, and we became pretty tight pretty quickly. He was always shy, and never really liked hurting people, so I’m not too sure why he joined the military of his Company, but he only moved up once, hence the nickname Lime.
In the Vertus there are six ranks, each one with their own name that I really don’t remember. The lowest rank wears yellow, next one up wears lime, one after that wears light green, then normal green, then dark green, then so dark green it’s almost black. The last rank is the special ops, they do all the secret missions and such, and I only know about them because I read through the Fierté file when I was bored.
But anyways, Lime got stuck in the lime-coloured rank, and so he got his nickname.
Lime punched my shoulder lightly, and I was jerked back into the present time. He grinned at me, and brushed his hand through his green-white hair.
“Whaat?” I asked, punching him back and grinning back.
“Pai’s gone into a silent mood, and you weren’t talking either.” I turned to look at Pai, and saw her staring out into the distance, at the high wall that surrounded our City. She had silent moods every now and then, we’re she’d just sort of zone out and not talk for a while. I always assumed they were some glitch from the project or something.
“Sorry, love,” I said, and I scratched my head. “But,” I started, looking at the sun setting over the wall, “I should probably get down now.” He sighed.
“Yeah, moi aussi.” I glanced at Pai again.
“Ah, she’ll snap out of it soon, let’s just leave her.” Lime laughed and nodded.
“Yeah…” I stood up and waved.
“See you tomorrow, love.”
“Sleep well, ma copine” I rolled my eyes at him and walked off, wondering how in the world he and Pai got up to the roof and back down again.
That night, as I fell asleep, I was plagued with thoughts of my City, and my friends and family in it, being erased. I hoped that the other Cities decided we were clean enough to keep going; I didn’t really want to die.
I awoke, bleary-eyed, the next morning, my mind slow and drowsy from a good, deep sleep. As I got ready to face the day, I thought briefly about visiting one of my brothers, Orien Mint (Better known as Minty), in the Invidian Asylum.
Neo hated it when I went there though, he considered Mint a disgrace to the family and avoided mentioning him. The media wasn’t allowed to even think about him for fear of being assassinated.
Mint was… a little odd to say the least. He was obsessed with things being even, even going as far as blowing up a building because it was on a little bit of a lean. I think that’s what landed him in the Asylum. The worst thing to do is tell him his eyes are different colours. He’s still got scars from the last time someone mentioned it.
I, unlike pretty much everyone else in the Invidia family, actually loved the family. So I went and visited Mint, though no-one else did, and I followed Illias around in the labs despite the weird-eye I’d get from him and other scientists.
Illias was my other brother, and he was what people called a mad scientist. He was the head scientist of Invidia, in fact. He had long red hair, and almost always had headphones on his ears. It’s a wonder he could hear anything. Or maybe he couldn’t, nobody could ever really tell with him.
I also had an older half-sister, Rose, but nobody cared about her.
Sirens suddenly broke the silence of my room. I pressed my hand against the small screen next to the door and it slid open, allowing me to step out onto my balcony. I looked down onto the streets to see people running from a large black creature. I froze; I’d never seen anything like it before. What seemed to be shadows were erupting from its back, and I could see giant, stained claws and fangs contrasting against the monster’s black body. Black liquid flowed from it and pooled in the streets, and it’s visible yellow eye was wide with agony and hunger.
I was petrified by the sight of the thing.
A shadow from its back shot up towards me and I stumbled back, pulling my retractable rod from my sleeve and extending it. The sun glinted off it, right onto the shadowed tentacle, which didn’t shrink away from the light, killing my theory of it actually being a shadow. I stepped back into a fighting stance and raised the rod to cover me. The black liquid dripped from the thing, and I realised it was probably blood.
We stood—or rather, I stood and the shadow danced and twirled—in silence for about half a minute, then it rushed at me and I had to sidestep to avoid it. Unfortunately my balcony was very small, and I dodged into the glass panels guarding me from falling. The thing seemed to sense I was against a wall, and went at me again, wrapping around me and pulling me from the balcony.
Oh sugar honey iced tea, I thought, and I let out a scream.
As I was pulled towards the streets, I saw other shadowy tentacles climbing the walls of the skyscrapers around me, smashing glass and probing into the buildings. There were other screams, which rushed past me with the wind.
With a crash I was smashed into the ground. My breath rushed from my lungs and I fought to get it back while clamouring to my hands and knees. Something cracked in my back, and a searing pain rushed through me. I swore.
A shadow fell over me, and I swore again as I saw giant clawed feet crush the tarred road in front of me. Cracks spread through the black like spider webs, and the dark blood seeped into them.
I could hear the creature breathing deep, pained breathes, and hot air rushed over me, as well as blood and what I assumed was saliva dripped onto me. The world began to blur, and stars shot through my vision. At least the pain in my back was starting to lessen... My arms collapsed under me, and my face hit the solid ground, but by then the world had gone black.
Yusaku
I looked down at the orange-headed girl lying on the ground in front of me. She was covered in dried, black blood, and her own red blood, which was still flowing from multiple places.
“Get her cleaned up,” I growled, running my hand through my yellow hair. Renn walked forward with a bucket of water and a stained rag and crouched down next to the girl. She proceeded to mop her up, but unfortunately, we didn’t have any spare bandages, so she ripped strips from the girl’s clothes and bound her wounds with them, muttering kindly all the while.
I turned away and left the room, and saw my twin follow me.
“Who is she?” She asked me, her voice soft.
“She wears the colours of Invidia, although she doesn’t seem to wear the logo.”
“Think she’s from Invid?”
“I don’t know, Nori. Why did you even save her? We already have to deal with ourselves, let alone some girl,” I snapped. Nori shrank away from me, and I sighed.
“I’m sorry, I’m just…”
“Stressed, yes, I know.” She hugged me, her small arms clinging on to me. I knew she was scared of losing me, because I felt the same way about her. Losing her would be like losing half of me.
But it was hard not to lose people in times like these, when every Company was after us, and the Crosses had decided we were Sinful. I’d already lost many close friends of mine, which was why I’d decided to not get close to anyone else.
Except Nori, but it was impossible not to care about her.
Without thinking my hand rose and rubbed my sleeved arm. Nori frowned. “Please don’t do that,” she murmured, putting her hand on mine. I jerked my hand away and avoided her eyes.
“Oi, sir!” Exclaimed a voice from behind me. Without looking I knew it was the masked, white-haired man who had joined us not too long ago.
“Yes?” I asked, not turning to look at him.
“That girl you found, she’s the heir of Invidia.” I stopped walking and spun around.
“How do you know that?” I demanded. He rolled his eyes and scratched his head.
“I just know, alright bro?” I growled and walked off, mulling over this new development. If we had the heir of Invidia, we could easily blackmail them, or demand a ransom. If we could get her onto our side, we could even have a double agent up high. I smirked, it seemed things were taking a turn for the better for once.
Chapter two:
- Spoiler:
Chapter 2: Light and Dark—Stasia
My first thought when I came to was that my head was pounding. I wondered if I was still lying on the road. Or maybe the monster had eaten me. Was there meant to be pain when you were dead? I figured the only way to figure out where I was, was to open my eyes. So I did, very slowly. Fluorescent light burned my eyes, and I covered my face with my hands and rolled to the side, moaning all the while. Somebody—or something—moved beside me, and I felt a hand rest on my arm.
“Hey, Ginger. You alright?”
I tried to say “What do you think?” but it came out more like “Mmfahsiuoawe.” Yeah, that’s how useless I was at talking right then. Whoever it was laughed, and I figured they were either a boyish-sounding girl, or a girly-sounding boy. How vague that clue was.
“I’ll take that as a yes, Ginger,” they said. At least they sounded cheerful. Murderers didn’t sound that cheerful, right?
I tried opening my eyes again, and this time I let them adjust to the light. In front of me was a dusty ground made of scratchy cement, and a few meters away was a metal wall. Possibly steel, and rusted in patches. I figured I was in a slummy area, though I didn’t know any types of buildings like what I could see of that one.
“Ngh…” I groaned as I rolled onto my back and attempted to sit up.
“Nuh-uh, not smart, Ginger. You really hurt your back before, and I’ve had to emergency-stitch quite a lot of cuts. I really have no clue how easily they’ll rip, so moving might not be so smart for now.” I stopped struggling to get up and glanced at the person who was talking.
Once again, either it was a boyish girl or a girly boy. Huh, still vague, and it was even harder to tell with my vision still refusing to go clear.
From what I could tell, they had pastel purple hair and grey eyes, and a big lopsided grin. There was a black and turquoise-y blue cap shoved on their head and he/she wore black and blue (the same blue as on their cap) clothes. I rubbed my eyes, blinked, and sighed a sigh of relief as my vision cleared.
Even when I was able to see properly, I still couldn’t quite figure out what gender the person was. Their clothes weren’t baggy, but weren’t tight, but either way they were flat-chested and not curvy at all. I closed my eyes and kneaded my temples. This gender confusion was not helping my headache.
“You ok?” Asked the person.
“…fine,” I muttered sarcastically, finally able to make my mouth function properly. They laughed again, and I figured that they were a boy. Opening my eyes again, I decided that they were a boy, and left it at that.
“So what’s your name?”
“I’m Stasia of…” I realised it might not be the smartest to say I was from Invidia, as I had no clue where I was or who I was with. I wished I had Pai with me right then.
“Of…?”
“Nothing.” I coughed, and my back screamed at me in pain. I flinched and bit my lower lip.
“Sorry the pain’s still there, we don’ really have any medical stuff around, as much as I tell Yusa we should ‘acquire’ some.” I wondered who this Yusa person was. Perhaps he was important? “Oh, and don’t freak when you see your dress, just in case you’re one of those fussy girls.”
“…Why?” I asked suspiciously. The boy grinned sheepishly, and scratched his head.
“I sorta had to use it for binding your wounds.” I suddenly realised that I wasn’t wearing my usual dark grey dress with its huge bell-sleeves, and sat up despite the extreme pain in my spine and ribs. I was wearing a long black sugar honey iced tea with stains and tatters.
“I bet you had fun with that…” I muttered, feeling my face heat up.
“Huh? Oh, no!” The boy laughed. “I’m not a guy.” Oh, well, oops. The girl, I meant.
“Oh, I’m sorry, love…” I groaned, feeling my face redden more. I wrapped my arms around myself. I felt like my guts were going to explode out of me and that I needed to keep them held in.
“Don’t freak ‘bout it, people make that mistake so much it ain’t funny.” I probably would have replied, but my vision was reddening, and my brain was pounding again. I let myself fall back into the ignorant bliss of sleep.
The next time I woke up it was darker. I guess that there were windows higher up that were letting light in before. The girl from before wasn’t with me, but there was a plate with some white mush next to me. I sat up carefully and picked up the plate. Dust had settled on the… food I guess, which meant either it’d been there for a while or that the place was extremely dusty. Then, it didn’t look like anyone had cleaned recently, so I went for the latter.
I sniffed the white stuff cautiously, then grabbed and shoved it in my mouth. It didn’t really taste like much, so I assumed it was the cheap processed food that poor people bought. It was made for nutrition, not taste, and was healthier than it looked.
Then again, I could have just been eating poisonous mould for all I knew about the world outside of Invidia. I saw a door open out of the corner of my eye and a short girl with chocolate eyes, darkish skin and white-blond hair pretty much skipped into the room. I watched her as she grinned at me and waved. “Hello,” she said happily.
“Uh, hey,” I said back, spitting white mush everywhere.
“So, Stasia was it? Where’re you from?” She sat down on her feet next to me and I ignored her, shoving more food into my mouth so I could avoid the question. She giggled. “Fine, ignore me then. We’ll get the answer from you soon, Invidia-girl.” I spluttered and more chewed up food sprayed from my mouth.
“How do you know that?” I cried. She smiled sweetly and tapped her head.
“Mind reader.”
“Yeah right,” I grumbled, wondering if I sleep talked.
“By the way, seeing as I know your name, I should probably introduce myself. I’m Vanilla, the cute one of this delinquent group.” I looked at her clothes, which were white instead of the black of the girl from before, but there was still the same blue in stripes down her whole outfit.
“So… who is this group?” I questioned, hoping that I’d finally get some answers.
“I’m not really sure I can tell you that, you’d probably have to ask Yusa. Sorry.” She tilted her head and smiled an apologetic smile. I really started getting curious as to who this Yusa person was. I really was suspecting that he was either the leader of whoever these people were, or that he was rather important to them.
“Who is Yusa?” Vanilla giggled, putting her small hand to her mouth in a half-closed fist.
“Not sure I’m allowed to tell you that either, sorry.” I swore, it seemed nobody was allowed to tell me anything.
“Why are you even here then?” I grumbled, not happy at having things kept from me.
“I got told to check up on you, plus I wanted to meet you.”
“...Why?” Why on the New World would this small girl want to meet me?
“I wanted to see if Company heirs were as stuck-up as Yusa said they were.”
“And am I?” She smiled.
“Nah, not quite.” Not quite? I blinked. I never considered the fact I could be considered stuck up by some. “You look surprised,” Vanilla stated.
“That’s because I am, love,” I said. “So where are we?”
“Our secret base,” she replied, grinning childishly. I rolled my eyes. What a weird child. I wondered why she was in a place like this; she didn’t look older than thirteen. Was she an orphan raised by a street gang? Or was she a genetic experiment that escaped the labs?
Another person entered the room, this time an actual guy from what I could tell. He was tall, looked around eighteen, and had pale skin, dark eyes and black hair. Sort of the opposite of the Vanilla girl next to me.
“Hey Crux,” Vanilla said happily, smiling at the angsty-looking teen.
“Hello Vanilla…” He glanced at me with his dark eyes, and it looked like they went on forever. I felt coldness radiate from him. sugar honey iced tea that was scary.
“What d’you want?” She asked, jumping to her feet and taking the guy’s hands.
“Yusa wants you back and he wants the girl too.”
“Okie pokes.” Vanilla poked Crux’s nose and then jumped around and held out her hands to me. “Want a couple hands?” I took her hands and she helped pull me up, being careful not to hurt me more than I was hurting myself.
I swayed on my feet, and felt a strong hand steady me. I turned my head and saw Crux holding my arm. Vanilla linked her arm with mine and winked at the man. With their help I took slow, agonizing steps across the room, through the door and down a poorly-lit corridor with boards nailed to the wall, presumably covering holes. I stumbled a few times, and stubbed my toe (I seemed to have lost my boots unfortunately), but apart from that we arrived at what appeared to be our destination with me pretty much intact.
It was a smaller room with boarded up windows, it was lit by coloured bulbs hanging from the roof, but even though it was small, it had a high, flat ceiling. Containers, boxes and large pieces of junk lay around the room, and various people were perched upon the bigger ones. I counted mentally and figured there were around six other people in that room, including the boyish girl from before (Whose name I still did not know), Crux and little Vanilla.
There was one guy, he looked around the same age as me, who sat on a tower of junk. He was leaning on one hand, while the other hung limp by his side, covered by a long black and blue sleeve. He, like almost everyone else in the room, wore black and blue. His top was high-collared, and was sleeveless on his left side, though that arm was covered with a black and blue striped armband. He had black shorts on, and legwarmers coloured like his armband. He had ruffled longish blond hair, and I noticed his eyes were the same colour as the blue on the clothes they all wore.
There was a surprisingly similar girl sitting just next to him, with the same eyes. She also had blond hair, and wore a black and blue outfit. I guessed that they were either twins or clones.
Yusa was watching me, his turquoise-blue eyes glimmering in the coloured lights.
“Stasia of Invidia.” He said my name as if I was a pile of muck.
“Uh… hi,” I said, putting on my best fake grin. Best not to look scared in situations like this. He seemed surprised by my smile, and glanced at the girl next to him. She smiled at him, and I could see how much she cared for him. Probably siblings then, because clones never really got too close. “Who are you?” I decided to ask.
“Yusaku,” he growled. So he was the Yusa everyone had talked about.
“So you’re the person I ask? Alrighty, love. Where am I and why am I here?” The whole room was silent. I could see the girl with purple hair laughing silently. I realised that maybe it wasn’t so smart asking questions when I was being held captive by a weird group of people. Vanilla and Crux still stood next to me, holding me upright, and I was glad they were there because I didn’t feel I could support myself at that time.
Yusaku stayed silent for a while, and just watched me. I wondered if he’d ever talk.
“You are with us, the rebel group of Thymos,” he finally decided to say.
“Thymos?”
“We fight the corruption of the Companies, and the lies of the Crosses.” I frowned, the Crosses were the primary religion of City no. 6, being based upon what was found off an old religion from the Old World. But why would anyone fight them? They seemed pretty harmless, except for their utter contempt of the Companies of course.
“We’re trying to bring back the peace the New World had at first, before the Companies took control,” piped in the girl next to Yusaku. Everyone in the room nodded at the word peace. So Thymos wanted peace. Made sense, didn’t everyone?
And then it hit me that they weren’t too fond of Companies, and unfortunately, I was the heir of a Company. Ah, sugar honey iced tea.
“What do you want with me?” I questioned, suddenly quite afraid for my life. Yusa sat up straight and held out his left hand to me.
“We want you to join us.” My voice ran away in surprise and I was left speechless. Everyone was watching me, even Crux, with his dark, dark eyes. What was I supposed to say? I didn’t want to join them, I just wanted to go home, but if I didn’t join them they’d probably kill me.
“I, um…” I mumbled, unable to figure out what to do.
“Hey, hang on, you can’t just ask her straight up like that,” said a voice belonging to someone who had just entered the room behind me. He walked over to Yusa and ran his hand through his blank, white hair. He looked at me, and I could see him smirk under the mask he wore over his mouth and nose. “You’ve gotta give her reason to join. I mean, she just woke up and is being held prisoner in a place she’s never been before by people she’s never seen before, and now she’s expected to join her captors? I doubt a spoilt Company brat would join us without it being proven we were the good guys.”
“He’s got a point,” said purple-hair-girl. I inwardly let out a sigh of relief.
“Um, I’d actually rather not join you guys, I just want to go home,” I said. Yusaku leaned over and he and his look-alike had a quiet conversation. The tall, white-haired man joined in partway, smirking the whole time. His eyes kept flicking back to me, and I noticed he had light grey eyes. Quite nice eyes actually. He wore a white and blue outfit with a jacket, high-collared shirt and long pants.
The other two leaned back from Yusaku and he looked at me again.
“We’ll let you go back to Invidia.” I opened my mouth and closed it again. I wondered if I’d heard that right. “Nori will take you.” The girl sitting next to him jumped from the pile of junk to her feet and smiled at me.
“Hello, Stasia,” she said, grinning. Before I was able to say or do anything, she grabbed my arm, pulled me away from my support and suddenly we were outside.
“Wha…?” I asked, completely disorientated.
“I can manipulate space. Long story there that I’m not sure I can go in to.” She looked around, and then pointed at the familiar building in front of me, with large white and black doors. “There’s your Invidia there.” I began to run towards it, but was stopped by Nori before I ran right into the busy street. Oops, I was paying less attention than usual.
“Careful, Stase,” she said, shaking her head.
“Can you just take me to the roof of the building?” I asked, looking up at the top of Invidia.
“Sure,” she said cheerfully, and with a laugh we were on the roof, with a cold wind blowing at us.
Pai and Lime stared at us, Lime with his mouth wide open and Pai not looking so surprised. Nori stepped behind me and tried to hide, I guess she wasn’t meant to be seen by anyone.
“Hey,” I said breathlessly, and I gave a small wave.
“What are you doing here? We saw you leave with Neo a while back. Why do you look like you’ve been in a fight and why on the New World are you wearing that?” Pai questioned with her cold voice.
“See! I told you that wasn’t her!” Lime exclaimed.
“Shut up.”
“Sorry, Pai…” I frowned.
“Hang on, I haven’t even been here today,” I cut in. I glanced at Nori and she looked away. The other Stasia was probably the reason they let me come back. Lime gave Pai an “I told you so” look and she glared back at him.
“Stase has been with us for the past week,” Nori mumbled quietly from behind me.
“That long?” Pai muttered, and I could see her think to herself.
“I saved her from that monster that attacked.”
“You saved me?” I wondered how the small, delicate-looking girl could have saved anyone from a creature like that. She stepped out from behind me and grinned.
“Remember? Teleporting powers! I jumped in there, grabbed you and jumped out again. Easy.” Right, easy. “Though Yusa wasn’t too happy with me after… He doesn’t like me getting myself in situations where I can get hurt. He’s a very protective brother.” So they were siblings, I was right.
Lime and Pai were watching us with confused looks on their faces. So I sat down next to them and told them about my short stay with Thymos. Nori was frowning, I don’t think she expected there to be friends of mine waiting, but then after a while she relaxed and sat down next to me and started swinging her legs.
For a while we were quiet, then suddenly I felt Pai freeze up next to me. “What is it?” I asked, but then my question was answered when I heard footsteps on the roof behind us.
“Well, well,” began a too-familiar voice. “What have we got here? A Thymos, an impostor and two traitors. Father will love me so much for catching you.” All four of us leapt to our feet and spun around to face me.
Or rather, my clone. She looked so similar to me that for a second even I was confused. Except she was more like a mirror image; her long coppery hair covered her left eye, and she held her extremely large sword with her right hand, which was the opposite of me. Instead of a black dress with long sleeves, she wore a white dress with short sleeves, and her tights were black instead of white.
Lime looked between us and let out a whine of confusion.
“God, Lime, you are so useless,” Pai muttered and she summoned her two weapons, Tsuki and Hoshi, long silver poles with spikes at the end, and pointed them at the other me.
“I resent that, Pai,” he said as he pulled his sword from its holster on his back. To my other side I saw Nori pull throwing knives from her sleeves, and I wished I had my rod, I was pretty useless without it.
“So what’s your name?” I asked.
“Karise,” she answered. She smirked and twirled her large sword carelessly. I don’t know how she even lifted the bloody thing. “Named with an Avarus name by dad. Goes to show he loves me more than you.” I clenched my fists, she was lying. No way Neo would love a copy more than his real daughter. “Replaced you in less than an hour,” she continued. Ok, so maybe he would. Not like he won the “best dad of the year” award.
“Bet Illias won’t fall for it,” I sneered.
“Illias? Oh, he helped create me!” The beautiful and wonderful person laughed and my face fell. Looks like I couldn’t depend on anyone in my family after all. “So…” She hefted the sword and pointed it straight at me. “Come quietly? I’m sure daddy will be so happy to see you again.” I started to step backwards, then realised that might not be so smart considering I was around 800 meters off the ground and one step back would have me plummeting to my death.
“No way,” Pai growled and she stepped back into her strange fighting stance. One foot balanced behind the other, strangely reminiscent of a ballet dancer. Nori looked at me questioningly. I nodded, hoping that she was asking to teleport us out of there. Thankfully she was, and she flipped back, knocking all of us over the edge. Lime screamed and I cried out as I flailed about.
I caught Pai’s arm, Lime caught my leg and Nori gripped my hand.
We were lying on the dusty ground of the room I first woke up in while with the Thymos. Lime groaned and rolled over.
“Where are we?” Nori jumped to her feet and put her hands on her hips.
“Back at Thymos,” she replied, looking around. “Though Yusa will probably be mad again…” She slumped. I stood up, ignoring the pain that shot through me, and hugged the poor girl.
“That was fast.” Turns out purple-hair-girl was in the room the whole time. She clapped slowly. “More friends for us.”
“Hey,” said Nori. “You can never have too many friends.”
Next to me Lime was looking around curiously, probably wondering where we were, and Pai was dusting her Lolita-esque dress off, grumbling to herself.
“Yusa’s waiting for you,” the girl said, and she led us down the same corridor again. I leaned on Pai and she wrapped her arm around my waist and helped me along. Lime stood on my other side, but he didn’t try to help me.
Once again I found myself in the same room as before. Beside Yusaku was a girl with long wavy brown hair that stuck up in odd directions and big, slanted amber eyes. Although she had a childish face, she was very curvy and wore a rather tight black and blue dress. I’d never seen her before, and yet she seemed strangely familiar.
Nori skipped over to the two and sat on Yusaku’s other side, taking his smooth hand and playing with it. The girl smiled at me shyly and hid herself behind the blond leader of the group.
“Welcome back,” Yusaku said, eyeing up my two companions. “I see you brought company.” I grinned. “Have you reconsidered my offer?”
I looked at Pai and Lime. Lime grinned at me, and Pai just stared at me.
“Yeah, sure, I’ll join you, love. I want to kill that Karise girl.”
“What about your two friends?”
The two exchanged glances. I knew lime wanted to stay loyal to Fierté and Pai would be in big trouble if she left Aiyoku, and both would be hunted down and killed on sight.
“Sure, we’re in,” Lime said.
“I’ll follow Stasia wherever,” muttered Pai. I looked at them in shock. I never expected them to actually leave their Companies for me.
“What did you expect, Stase?” Lime questioned as he leaned his arm on my shoulder. I whimpered in pain and he stepped back, apologizing profusely.
“You’d do the same for us,” Pai agreed; and it was true, I would.
“Three more! Time for a serious party,” called out the purple-hair-girl who I still did not know the name of.
“Shut up, Renn,” Yusa snapped and she promptly shut her mouth and sat still. Well, now I knew.
“Haruka, get them uniforms,” he ordered. The busty brown-haired girl nodded and climbed down the junk pile awkwardly. I saw Lime staring at her shamelessly and wished I didn’t have the flat, plank-like body I had. Haruka touched each of our foreheads in turn and then closed her eyes and concentrated. My clothes were instantly replaced by a dress quite like my previous one that had been torn up, except instead of pink stripes in now had the turquoise-blue that everyone else wore. Pai’s lavender dress and faded blue jeans were replaced by a grey Lolita dress and tight black pants, with blue stripes, of course.
Lime gave one last sad look at his Vertu uniform before it was replaced by a white jumpsuit with blue circles on the chest and a long stripe running down the side. Like with his lime-coloured uniform from before, it had one long sleeve and one short sleeve and an immaculate, white armband-of-sorts covering his bare arm.
Renn laughed. “Looks good!”
Nori
The new Stasia girl was happier than one would normally be in her situation. At first Yusa so hated her, but I could see him warming up to her. Probably because she was cute, I guess. My brother always was a sucker for pretty girls, although the only girl he ever actually cared about was me. He was so very protective of me, and I of him.
Though just because he loved me, didn’t mean he didn’t yell at me like he was now.
I knew he’d be mad about me bringing back two more people, but I didn’t expect him to be angry enough to yell. I didn’t like it when he yelled.
Nova stood quietly next to Yusa and ran his hand through his white hair. That Nova guy was weird. He hit on every girl he saw, and quite a few boys too, despite the fact that homosexuality was considered a great offence in the New World. He gave up on me after Yusa nearly choked him to death with his chain-flail, though he still flirted with the other girls of Thymos. His closest friend was Nahu, a girl with silver hair and sky-blue eyes, who was pretty much a girl version of him. Even though she looked like a boy, he seemed to be quite into her. Even though he seemed confident and strong, he got exhausted very easily and seemed to always have a headache. None of us knew why though.
“Excuse me, Yusa,” he piped up, raising his hands as if to say he meant no threat.
“What?” snapped my twin, pissed at being interrupted.
“Please remind me why you are complaining at what Nori did. As I see it, she brought back three new people to join our glorious—“ the sarcasm was obvious there—“Thymos.”
“She could have been hurt.” Nova laughed.
“Can’t protect her forever, bro.” He smacked Yusa on the back, which earned him a glare, and grinned. It seemed as though he was amused by life, I barely ever saw that joyous smirk leave his face.
“I can try,” my brother muttered and he stormed from the room. Before I could go after him Nova placed his hand on my shoulder. I looked up at the tall man and with a feeling of shock I saw that instead of the normal grin, his mouth was a straight line. His look of perpetual amusement had been replaced by a serious one of worry.
“Nova?” I asked feeling just a little anxious. He shook his head.
“Nothing. Go make sure your brother’s ok, sweetheart.” He dropped his hand and looked away. Without another word spoken, I left.
Ahaha stuck on chapter three. How fun~ |
