I'm stumped By fleyer. 03/11/09, 02:05 pm |
| Honestly I can't figure out how to go about getting this design right in a way that it's pink, hollow and slightly see through (so that it can glow). I know how to wire it to glow and everything but the design to be seethrough in the shape and pink has got me going through like everything ><
'tis the top bit btw

| I don't know about how you would actually go about making it, but it strikes me that pink-tinted transparent plastic would do the trick.

There's a see through type, I think. But she wants it hollow to glow and I unno how you cast resin hollow. D: |

| I haven't cast in resin before, but the two alternatives I can see is a) stick something in the middle that can be pulled out after the resin has set (either a latex mould which may not be strong enough or cast in two pieces so the centre can be pulled out then the two pieces glued together) or b) drilling a hole into it in post for the lighting to go into (though I don't know how well drilling goes down with resin) |

Re: I'm stumped By Static. 03/11/09, 03:10 pm |
| Easiest way I think would be to cast it in two halves. When you have one half sculpted, do a latex layer or five to get all your detail, then a big plaster of paris blob. With the resin, "paint" rather than pour it into the mould - it'll be tricky to get it an even thickness all over, but if you do it slowly and build up the layers, it'll leave you with two identical halves to be put together with plenty of space for a bulb.
Note: this may not actually work! |

| What about using a clear plastic sphere, and stick the outside with translucent pink mosaic? |

| Going off the wall here. How about as an easier option painting it a metallic pink colour and coating it in an near-transperant red/pink glow in the dark or luminescent paint?
Casting may sound like a good idea, but you'll have to put in a fair amount off work to it: The 'easiest' casting way would be to cast in 2 halves. First make an outside mould. You can either do an "Half Mould" where you only do 1/2 of the side (side meaning front or back) of the shape you are wanting to cast and re-use the mould, or make a complete solid shape, coating your mould material around it, and splitting it in half when it is set. Then you have to make a smaller "reverse mould" to go in the inside to make your hollow inside.
The only flaw to this is that 90% of the time, the 2 halves never line up perfectly.
Or else you could go junk $2 shops, The Warehouse, craft stores, and where-ever else and look for hollow plastic jewels and shapes that you could split open, then put back together... |

Re: I'm stumped By Mandie_Chan. 04/11/09, 07:02 am |
| um... you can buy the wands that are pink and in a similar design. maybe you could get one of those and decorate the rest of the prop around it?
I think you can get them from most toy stores (some even have the glow light from memory) |
