Fabric paint? 8D
Post By Kelz. 12/09/09, 07:22 am

So I was at the theater today with my parents, helping clean out the costume room, when I came across an awesome purple thing that could very easily be made into a tabard.

So I ninja'd it.

Here tis:

https://2img.net/r/ihimizer/img199/5769/snapshot20090912.jpg

And this is what I want to turn it into:

Besides the obvious length changing + side sewing to make it right, I need the pattern on there.

What would be the easiest way to paint the pattern on?

Paint? I'd say applique would look nice? Orrr screen printing? You can make little board thingies that make that easy to doo at home.

I'm open to suggestions, I'm not really sure what the easiest way would be. Thus I ask.

I think I would have to go for screen printing... hopefully the materials aren't too expensive. D:

Having just invested in doing a bunch of home-screenprinting myself I can tell you that the initial set-up cost is very expensive. I've spent about $200 so far on setting up, so appliquéing would be the cheapest option - and for the size of the design probably the most easiest, as you're either going to have to make a huuuuge screen or make several different screens and pray that they line up in the right place. Personally, I think your best bet is appliquéing as it's easier + cheaper in this context. :)

I would reccomend the screenprinting option, far far easier and cheaper.

Stencil
$10 pot of fabric paint
$10 paintbrush (get a good one)

tape stencil on frabic and hours and hours of painting later, you will be finished.

Stencil ≠ Screenprinting.

VERY big difference - mostly through price and technique. Screenprinting involves using a light sensitive emulsion to process an image onto a screen, then you use a squeegee to print the image through the screen. Stencils, you cut the design out manually and use a brush or sponge to apply the paint.

I reckon stencilling is the best bet - if you make a stencil out of duraceal it's time consuming to cut out, but it won't move whilst you're painting. Very Happy

No worries - it's a fairly (lol, typod that as fairy) common misconception. Very Happy Screenprinting is generally more accurate - there's no human error when cutting out the stencil - but the screens are expensive (though reusable), so unless you actually have a screenprinting studio available (yay for being an art student!) to you, it's not a cheap option in the slightest.

Fabric painting is win <3
I've been painting the tails for my Fai cosplay this week, and it turned out awesome. Especially as it means you can get different toning in it~

The little pots that I buy are about $10 each (from Spotlight) but you don't need much paint.

And a craft knife if the design is too fiddly to cut out the stencil with scissors. Very Happy

Well... if you have an all-in-one printer, or one that can print onto photo paper, you should be able to print the design you want onto iron-on transfer paper. Then, well, iron it on. Our printer was budget as and it worked.

I've found that that iron on transfer paper only works well if it's ironed onto white though: and the amount of sheets you'd need to cover that large an area in solid colour could get quite expensive in terms of the amount of sheets you'd need to buy + possible printer ink. But yes, iron on transfer paper works incredibly well for getting both simplistic + complicated designs onto something. Provided that the design will fit onto an a4 sheet. Razz

Yeah - if you're ironing on anything other than white the colour you're ironing on will be tinted by the colour of the fabric. The only way around this, I've found, is to paint the back of the iron on paper where your colour ink is with white fabric paint before ironing it on - that way the ink has a white background to it, and won't be tinted by the fabric colour. It doesn't look very nice this way though, imo...

So guys. I've finished sewing the thing now, but there's an important, burning question that needs to be answered here... Where can I buy fabric paint? I went down to the Drawing Room to have a look, but they only had tiny expensive bottles, and I'm going to need a decent amount. :S
