So Disney has bought Marvel comics

Doubt Disney would be suicidal enough to try to meddle with the creative side of Marvel too much, personally. This kind of ownership worked before: Vegemite is owned by Kraft foods, and they were smart enough to not push the Americanism into a distinctively Australian market.

I still think the Jodi Picoult/DC connection more disturbing. And hilarious.

Actually, scrap that. I want to see Jodi Picoult re-writing Watchmen. That would be the ultimate lulz.

I just realised something. Scrap my last post. Picout/DN Misa would be EPIC. It's going to be all about the holy love toward her soulmate Light being the most important event in the universe and the entire cosmos only existed to gasp at how incredible their endless sweet honey wonderfulness are and why she's the role model of all women in the world.

Oh yeah by the way she's a psychotic serial killer on the side. But it's all okay if she's doing it to make her LOVE happy, I mean, it's TRUE ROMANCE that's important right?

I'm more interested to see a new Marvel film produced by Mirramax films or whichever company under the Disney Label would do it. Hell they did Kill Bill and all the other Tarintino flicks. Disney are gonna make some gorey comic films. I'm excited!

I think the big joke is obviously that Disney do Hannah Montana and etc but are they really gonna treat Marvel the same way after spending that type of money? Unlikely. From what I hear they are allowing the current films in the works to be completed before taking control over that side and I'm excited to see what Disney can do seeing as they already control some major film studios that do rather adult orientated filming. And naturally they will want the adult direction considering the sucess of Dark Knight. I'm glad.

It would be a laugh to see Marvel in Kingdom Hearts but its kinda unlikely....only kinda, but if it is it will most likely be treated the same way as Nightmare before Xmas is beign that its the other title in the game not directly named disney (As its touchstone which is owned by disney) and its treated very respectfully in the game so I imagine Marvel properties would be too if they get used.

Im still not sure why people are saying its disney that owns them when its not, but its the walt disney company which owns.. literally everything and doesnt seem to be too controlling of properties put out by miramax and etc which are still as gorey or sexual or drug filled or whatever as they were in the past.

Aside from that CEO of the Walt Disney compayn Bob Iger said this

Iger stressed the notion that fans can expect Marvel to continue to operate as it has.

"We're not planning on any 'Disneyfication' of Marvel," said Iger, "...Our intention is to keep Marvel as an entity."

Iger went on to explain that he has met with a great many Marvel
talents and that, like the acquisition of Pixar, Disney's primary goal
is to stay on the sidelines and let the artists do what they do best.

He did admit that he was excited about the chance for some cross-pollination in the future, though nothing is planned as of yet.

Iger reiterated that part of what is so intriguing about Marvel is that
the deal is designed to play out in the long run, having characters
that "transcend gender and age." In the short term, Disney just has to
wait until some of the Marvel deals already in place with other studios
and theme parks "work their course" and, until then, "there isn't much
planning to be done."

and before anyone reads into the cross pollenation thing and sees it as spiderman showing up on a disney show or vice versa. It seems to mean that Marvel writers give tips to Disney and the other way around, not really take full control. but the hate for disney will keep going i do believe

The whole "sold out" thing i always found weird, if someone offered you $4 billion would you say no? its kinda hard to refuse that kind of money, especially when the deals allows you to maintain everything you do now but just be under a sucessful company.

@ Adulescentulus Carnifex- Agree mean when thought that when the Disney channel first came out that they were going to play old Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck cartoons over and over and maybe make some new ones..
and play heaps of old Disney movies around the channel track.. like Sleeping Beauty and Dark Cauldron..

I agree with Sonic - it might not be a tragedy. In all serious-ness, there is a lot of opportunity for positive development. For example, Marvel's animations are somewhat lacklastre - they're competent, but nothing special. Having access to Disney's stuff (animators, technology etc) might result in an improvement there.
Disney actually DOES produce some stuff with a more serious tone. Gargoyles was a kids show, but it actually dealt with issues at about the level that Marvel Knights does: crime, rascism, wealth and poverty, justice, cultural assimilation. (Actually, IIRC, Marvel actually made a short comic run in the Gargoyles universe and and at one stage Eliza went undercover as a hooker to find a guy who was murdering women in NYC!).
Extra resources could result in Marvel expanding some of the characters that have been sitting around doing nothing much for ages, because Marvel is a traditionally MALE-FOCUSED enterprise. Disney is very much a FEMALE centered enterprise (when it's not being a money-grubbing-whore, at least). So maybe this signals the start of a turn around, maybe this signals the death of "women in refrigerators" and the dawning of a new era where there are more than 3 comics francishes with a central female character at a time.

My worry is that Disney is, in fact, a money grubbing whore. I DO worry about Disney-fication: maybe not Punisher braiding Logans hair sort of extreme, but Disney's long standing trend of quantity at the expense of quality, a hike in prices when comics are already too expensive for their target audience, AND Disney's long standing trend of stifling competition. Independent comics are already struggling with the recession, they have always struggled to compete with big corporations and now Marvel has just gotten even BIGGER.

On the other hand, I much prefer DC, so I'm just glad it happened to Marvel instead Very Happy

Either I lose the brand I like least, or the brand I like least improves until it might be as good as the brand I like more.
