Victorian ball
Post By Highlander. 22/06/09, 03:07 pm

I have noticed lately that some people here are into victorian dress (Pretty) and would like to make and wear some to a (cosplay?) ball. Not sure how many are from Christchurch. But there is now a Victorian Dance Group in Christchurch. Details below.

You will notice that Natasha has an email list going. But rather than post that on a public forum then I will either email/pm her email address to anybody who wants to go, or if too many then a club email.

Glenn

Hi Glenn,

Certainly, it would be great if you passed the information on.

The practices are happening on Thursdays, 7.30 pm, at Abberley park hall. The entry is by $2 donation. We have a hope to run at least one Victorian ball this year.

No dance experience is necessary, and everyone is welcome!

Cheers,

Natasha/Nataliya

Dear all,

I apologise for non-SCA-period topic - but since it is related to historical reconstruction, some people on this list might be interested in the following information.

The new Regency/Victorian dance group is up and going, and we will be getting together weekly on Thursdays. We will be learning dances typically danced in British/European/colonial ballrooms in the 19th (and probably 18th) centuries. Hopefully, there will be a ball or two later in the year.

First practice will be held on Thursday 21 May, 7.30 - 9 pm at Abberly Park hall (St Albans), $2 donation appreciated.

Everyone welcome. Please do contact me off-list if you're interested - I'll put you on the "Victorian dance" list to keep you updated. I'll be glad to hear from you.

Apologies again if there are any clashes with other scheduled SCA practices - we did our best to avoid them.

In service,

Nataliya/Natasha

Usually in these period groups you only wear period garb at formal events, ie balls and suppers, etc.

The balls usually cover the past (3-6?) months of dances learned at lessons. Once you have enough people who know enough dances (maybe 2+ years) you may then have mini-balls for the class every term, and then a full ball a couple? of times a year open to all past and present students or others covering a wider range of dances. Not sure if this is the way Nataliya will run it?

Very much fun. But I have enough trouble at the moment learning 13-16th Century English/French/Italian dance and sewing my costumes for those. So I will not be attending. I also have offers of a Swing (Big Band/Jazz) and a Historical Mid East Belly Dance Class. Just can not do every thing. Have tried the Belly Dance though.

I will contact everybody who expresses interest when I have time, with Natasha's email address. (She has a mundane and a historical personna name.)

Yes you can. Allow a lot of money, a lot of time and patience, and find someone to guide you, and you will learn. Start simple and then add the detailings later. Like starting out as a peasent, and the moving up to the upper class. And research and plan well, but allow a year or two to get a dress or two you are happy with. And remember once you ahve it it will last you for years.

I am going through all that now with SCA and Cosplay. Of course my SCA persona is simple so far. But even that is a stretch for me now. But I am thinking I may have to learn to weave, dye and worst, old fashioned style. Which means learning to make a loom first.

I am not sure if they will suggest hand sewing, but they are unlikely to behead you if you use a machine.

Or I can put you on to someone who may do it by machine or by hand at a reasonable rate, possibly. She did sakura petals current scottish lowland medieval dress. Of course that was simpler, but she is a trainned seamstress. I would have to ask. If you can hire it to start wil then it is good.

Yeah, if I had the health and time I would jump at Swing.

She (the seamtress) does most by machine and then does the details by hand. I'll go find a pic of 1 or the dresses she made me for you:

Some of that is inspired by the simpler garments. But balls usually attract the most complex upper class dress. But like nobody will judge anyway. They will encourage you.

research would start after seeing if its my think xP

Think? Thing? Anyway you can just go and try the class if you want. No pressure, skip a night if you are busy. But don't expect to be good overnight, progress may be slow or fast depending on the person. And some of those people have a lot of experience in other sorts of dance.

make a loom? like woodwork= threading machine? madness! u.u;;

An old style upright one? As in not easy like a modern loom, but more work to use. Or so I have been told. But that or pay $800 for imported fabric and that in a modern pattern using modern dyes. I think I can get free wool and spinning though!

i would never handsew a whole dress ! insane!! but a formal suit soso
i would pay some to teach me to sew though

Well we have a seamstress guild, they may be willing to give you free advice. (They just helped me avoid a potential large stuff up on tuesday!) However they are more pre 1600 though. There are probably people you know, family, etc that can teach you the basics. Just find someone who sews, and who you or a friend or family knows and ask them if you can sit in with them when the sew and practise on old cloth, then the real thing.

Also come to the sewing meet on the 4th. Just look under the CCC? It will be awesome (Cause Mandie AND Sakurawill be there!!!! Better if Angie turned up, but we forgive her.)

And when it comes to fabric selection and patterns I can ask this seamstress to sit down with you (think she is like $15 hour?) and she can show you pictures, select a look, do a pattern, help you find the fabric and even sew it for you.

If i can fit it in with aikido and wing chun extra curricular activitys ^^;
might have to dump one.

Jessica? Sorry don't know half the people here yet!
And Wing Chung, hmmm. A soldiers martial art! (And some guy called Bruce.)

that dress looked plain until the last picture i was like :O ooooooooohhhhhhh!!

Yes it looked plain, and yes it was not as plain as I thought. But that is still simple beacuse it is a mid-period scottish lowlands middle class garb to suit Isobel?/Sakura_Petals/Calie's personna. Hope I got that perssona name right! It is worn with a light coloured under shirt? Sakura can tell you more.

I am going for authetic Gaelic Scottish highland/Irish garb from early to mid period. So mine is a Lenee/Lenie (Long Tunic) and well thats it. A woollen cloak/blanket/BRAT when it gets cold. The Brat is what I may have to dye and weave, or pay some one to weave. You will probably see a prototype of this garb on the road trip. The scots highlanders were very poor, and up to 100 years behind european fashions, and of course from the opposite school of celtic clothing, ie longer tunics but no trousers.

Of being able to wear no trousers, cause scottish highland and irish women wore the same garb, only usually better, and longer!

Or of a Victorian dance group? Ask Micheale be Bruce/neimhaille because she has connections to these sort of groups, there may be one locally.

Or of hand sewing several sets of Garb, because I could die of frustration. And my formal stuff is just a shirt in saffron, with contrastin green or red silk thread. Very formal. But very noticealble if I get the stiching even!

Of course you could join the SCA and do pre 1600 stuff, renaisence or midieval stuff. There are some extremely gourgeous womens outfits in the later periods. Try sca.org.nz, this will link to the kingdom and the baronies who should all have galleries. sg.sca.org.nz is our barony (from the central north island to antartica), and it has galleries. Some of the women in our group have seamstress skills to die for. (We also have a pirate in the group!)

1) I hate how many sword or martial arts dive into things. If I ever teach sword then movement comes first for a while, and I am not alone in this. It is the basis for everything. And the current kning of Lochac agrees with me.

2)I don't know if covienient is the right word. But it is a last resort if I can't get what I want.

3)If you have the basics of hand sewing then you can already do 80-90% of hand sewing. The running stich is seriously the main stitch in hand sewing! And if they know nothing, but you still got the basics of them then they did well?

4) Do not ask me about those details. "I know nuding, nuding" (Sgt Shultz)
Seriously pre 1600 AD covers knimonos, viking and irish (irish did not change a lot), russian, african and mid-east, france and italian poofs, high and low classes, various professions and relgions, formal, battle, hunting and work wear over 1600+ years of history. You could find almost anything there. My dance teacher she walks around going she that fashion the young girls think is hip, that's 14th century french, and this high fashion is 13th century italian, etc.

5) Come and we can discuss this more. I will bring spare fabric and sewing kit.

Sort of had the name right it's spelt Esibell. I have another one sort of the same but better quality wool (prettier I think to but for $30+ a meter it had to be!) and it laces up the front. It's worn over a chemise (the same back then as it is now days). When you come over on the 4th I can show you both of them and tell you how much they cost. I also have pretty books you could look through, although they are from the medieval period, so earlier rather than later.

Great pictures.

In the SCA everybody is trying to talk me into learning to fight. While most highlanders would fight all of them knew how to dance! I think anybody who learns to fight and thinks they can be a prince is fooling themselves, you must be able to dance!

Really join for the dance dude. But like most ethnic/period dance clubs you will want one costume sooner or later. Sew or buy? But you only need one. It does not neeed to be over the top. At SCA meets we have early period viking garb, and late period glitzy stuff side by side and nobody thinks anything of it. And if you are going to do cosplay the sewing is good.

PS. we are going to her house.

Yeah i figure swinging swords and killing people = destructive, dance = social, which is the main point of most groups. Otherwise you just sit and watch, or avoid balls.

He is a philosopher? Discuss social development with me some time if you want to know my point of view.

The SCA may butcher fighting throughly, but they get one thing right. Win as quick as possible, it is a fight, the best way to stay alive is to kill the oponent. Beside it is usually a tournament format, so the game is to win fights. And it is not unusual for a fight to be over in 30 seconds! It is not unusual for the better fighters to hit once a second until they get lucky. Comes of using big shields.
Even the UCMRS by the book teaching of German Longsword is to take the offensive. Staying alive/defending may be necessary, but is only temporary unless you kill the opponent first.
