| I have to choose?
Currently my favourites are the Doctrine of Labyrinths series by Sarah Monette and the Jaz Parks series by Jennifer Rardin. And the Torchwood novelisations because official fanfic makes me giggle.
Longtime favourites include: Howl's Moving Castle, The Dark Lord of Derkholm, The year of the Griffin and Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones; Making History by Stephen Fry, Mirrordreams by Catherine Webb, Discworld in general, Joust series by Mercedes Lackey. And that's all I can think of that aren't the usual suspects like the Artemis Fowl series, the Prisoner of Azkaban, the Circle series by Tamora Pierce and Neil Gaiman's Sandman. |

Re: Favourite book/s?
By Re-l. 31/05/09, 02:48 pm |
| I'd have to say "A child called IT" By some author that I forgot the name of, as it wasn't all that important to me... It's probably one of the only books I've took the time to read, and semi enjoyed it.
It's a true story about a boy(the author himself) who went through years of abuse as a child from his mother. Some pretty horrible things happened that I can't be bothered typing. But If you like sob stories about kids that are sat on burning stoves, and forced to eat their own vomit/brothers poo then I suppose this book would be for you.
It kinda reminds me of the book duckeh MADE me read about the boy who got abused and sodomized by his father. Only the other one was less anal moar physical beatings n phsycological torture.
But anywho. The book is part of a trilogy. I read the first out of the 3, and was all cbf@ the others. Though I heard they were pretty ok. And also the authors brother wrote a book as a kind of branch of to his own fame type thing. About him supposedly getting abused aswell (which in the other books, it said that the brother was favouritised all the time by the mother, and she never lay a finger on him? ;s)
But yeh. It was a fairly good story |

| Hmm. Were I to be locked in a concrete bunker for the rest of my life while the world collapsed around me, I'd probably take with me Brideshead revisited, His Dark Materials, Bloody Jack, Count of Monte Cristo, Good Omens, Lord of the Rings.
Possibly the Hitchikers Guide, too...but I'd rather have the radio play. |

| I second Ender's Game- Orson Scott Card is awesome, best opening line in any book I have read ever: "I have seen through his eyes, and heard through his ears, and I'm telling you, he's the one." I love the Ender series, but moreso the spin-off Shadow series, however Ender's Game is the best.
The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss is a superb new work. Fantasy, again deals with a talented young genius, but Rothfuss is a great storyteller.
Otherwise, I like the Artemis Fowl books for a quick one afternoon/evening read and anything by David Gemmell- Legend (which comes in Graphic Novel form too), Waylander etc- who writes the best heroes and action scenes IMO. |

| My favourite series by far is A Song of Ice and Fire by George R R Martin. Fantastic books, Martin is a great storyteller. It's fantasy, but loosely so, the dragons and whatnot aren't thrown in your face. It's more about power struggles and politics and relationships. Dark as hell, sometimes depressing, but an AMAZING series. I've read these books so many times it's a little scary. Great characters which are incredibly well-rounded and real. There's no black and white, and the characters all have great growth throughout the story. If you like fantasy you should really read it if you can... Though like I said, very dark. There's some nasty stuff in there. Book five (of seven, the author hopes) MIGHT be coming out next year, if we're lucky. It'll be five years since the last book, lulz.
Speaking of nasty, I loved the Prince of Nothing series by R Scott Bakker too, even though they made me a little uncomfortable sometimes. Talk about graphic. He suffers from the Frank Miller 'all women are whores' thing, but aside from that, they are really good books. A really interesting story, although it's hard to discern the title characters intentions.
Also; pretty much anything by Tad Williams. Grown up fantasy (and sci fi) but not as grimdark. Very emotional, very well written. Again, great characters...
Yeah I live with level10 and we are neeeerdy.
Comics now!
IF YOU LIKE COMICS READ INVINCIBLE AND THE WALKING DEAD PLZ. They are that good. Invincible has a lot of heart for a superhero comic, there's no retconning and alternate timelines to worry about, and it's just plain awesome.
Walking Dead is written by the same guy (Robert Kirkman- also does Battle Pope which is wicked) but is so different. It has heart, but it gets torn apart on multiple occasions. Also very graphic.
Let's see... Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon is my favourite main line comic series. It's great (well it is JW, sheesh). I don't know what else I can say about it IT HAS COLOSSUS BOOYAH.
Really like The Long Halloween which is Two-Face's origin story (one of, I should say). My favourite DC comic. I like the Dark Knight Returns too, but not as much.
Bone! 'Nuff said.
We3 is a great mini series that I think any one who likes any kind of comics should read. I think it's probably the best story of any series I've read, if only because it's the sort of thing that would be possible in the near future, if not now (cybernetic implants on animals to use in warfare). It's really heartbreaking, though. I cried A LOT.
SO YEAH. Reading is fun :) |
