Victorian pattern books By Static. 08/05/09, 07:23 am |
| So I'm looking at buying these two books: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0486283577/thecostumersmani http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0486407217/thecostumersmani and was wondering if anybody already had them, or knew if they were as absolutely fantastically awesome as they look? I will more than likely buy them anyway, just curious to see if they were a common resource or not :) |

| They aren't bad. I found them a tad boring to be honest ;) But that's because when I got them out I was super dead keen on c1880s fashion ;) So I may have been biased when I read them. Lots of patterns though, and that's the main thing :)
There are free patterns out there and I may have some files I may be willing to share so long as they don't get used for the comp! I will hunt out the online pattern books as I found more than a few. Sadly my favourite seems to have been taken down
Oh and I am going to take a pattern from my 1893ish bodice soon. It's very pretty and a bottle green jacquard. Probably about the time I get a Hussar's uniform to take a pattern from in a few months |

http://openlibrary.org/b/OL22569444M/Historic-English-costumes-and-how-to-make-them Ahhh, this is why it is no longer available for free. Dover bought it to reprint ;) Yay actually as I may be able to get my own copy now
Very much worth it. Even if a few bodices are worn backwards and on women clearly of the 1910s era ;) |

| Oo-er, this is for the comp! Don't say too much! I bought them both today, got them for dirt cheap (well, relative dirt anyway ) so couldn't really pass 'em up. The patterns were what I was after, lol! I'm still trying to narrow down which eras are mixed up in this design - if I ask you for help *after* the comp, would that be okay?
EditL Oh! That reminds me - neimheille, I linked to glittersweet.com from my site, but I used one of my photos of your Catwoman for the banner...is that all cool? URL is cosplay.little-noise.com if you want to take a peek - wasn't sure of some of the copyrights on your photos. |

| No worries, if they are your photos that's cool, I have a few photos that I am allowed to use from photographers but I can't really allow their use by others :)
And no worries either :) I have a thing for patterns, and if you already have the books winging their way I can happily post more pattern books online for others to share in the love too :)
I do some tutorials on historic patterning with the SCA group up here so if anyone is every interested in it I'd love to see more faces (it's on a Sunday) :) I'll be decifering Alcega in the next few weeks (16thC Spanish tailoring manual, brilliant but a bit like a jigsaw ;) ) http://www.renaissancetailor.com/ A few scans here from simialr books.

And just to get really oldfashioned... http://www.digitalegypt.ucl.ac.uk/textil/dress.html Egyptian dress :) There is even a beaded tunic or two out there :) 1 2 3 |
