Non Anime Cosplay? By Dozy. 22/03/09, 02:42 am |
| What are people's thoughts on non-anime/manga/japanese games, cosplay?
And how many people are interested in book characters that may not have any actually art work devoted to their costume? edit: to clarify my question.

| Non-anime cosplay is just as awesome. I have lots planned, for different sci-fi shows that I love. Book characters without art would be kinda hard... Because everyone see the character differently in their minds. Still, it'd be fun. Also, HARRY POTTER COSPLAY!!! |

| I hardly ever do anime cosplay (Buggy being my first) I am a costumer at heart, so I love Movie replica's of historical garb and imaginative variations on them as well (hehe Starwars)
I love the costumes in some Sci-Fi shows, and I am hoping to crank out a Star Trek OS Female Uniform before the new Movie comes out in May
that is my 2 cents...

| Anime cosplay -is- more difficult in my opinion, as you have to translate a 2D picture into 3D costume. Also, the artists sometimes get very fanciful and whimsical in their designs, defying the laws of physics.
(Wait, how can that float? There's nothing there to support them!)
Personally, I lump Japanese games in there along with anime/manga. I think game cosplays are easier, because you get a 3 dimensional idea of what the costume already looks like, and you can rotate the "camera" to see the various details.
I'm all in favour of non-anime/manga cosplays. Zomg, I would kill to cosplay as Jareth and Contact Juggle. As they're often reasonably rare, it is often refreshing to see something other than anime/manga/Japanese RPG cosplays. There are plenty of characters out there, if one isn't so much into anime but still wants to indulge their hobby.
As for book characters... It's always interesting to see how people interpret characters' outfits, as it allows a lot of leeway. I do believe that the Cosplay Contest does accept book cosplays, so it is likely more common than I would have thought.
And then a subject not really touched upon is concept cosplays. These can be facinating, such as a Halloween version of Riku, or I once saw a lolita Axel. I know there's a bunch of Pokemon this year and I'm really looking foward to seeing their anthropomophised costumes ;D |

| Totally in support. I've cosplayed an American game character, I know many who have. We've had all kinds of cosplay that are very much not from a Japanese comic/cartoon/game at Armageddons too. :3
Excluding the ones that are hired by the con itself, look at all the Starwars and American comic characters we get each year too. :3 |

| I thought non-anime cosplay was a given. D:
Like, people dress up as Superman or Princess Jasmine or Alice - they might not call it cosplay but it's still essentially the same thing. |

| Yeah, since cosplay is just costume play, and wearing a non anime cosplay is still really a cosplay since your still costume playing. Its just westeners who tend to use it just for anime/manga cosplays. |

| Considering that started in the US.. yeah it should be a given ;) The name was coined to describe what was happening at US cons by a Japanese producer.
I personally would love to make Magrat's armour when she faces the Elf Queen in Lords and Ladies. Made from a tin bath and a couple of pans ;) And spikes. Spikes everywhere. There has been some artwork after the book was written, but it would still be an interpretation of a written piece. |

| I would love to see Magrats armour from Lords and Ladies of course you would need a cat in a box to go with. Oh, and I did not aim to knock anime or non-anime costumes I was just wondering what people's impressions are. Costumes are costumes no matter what you create. |

| They're there for charity. All the 501st groups do it - I can't remember the name of the NZ branch. But they agree to appear at functions like this and the money is donated to a charity. It's SO cool of them |

| Non-anime cosplaying is awesome..though I'd never go for it myself ..though it's prolly more easier to make. I wouldn't be suprised if there's a buncha people going for the "Twilight" characters ..or maybe that's wishful thinking 'cause I'd love to glomp an Edward. |

| It's more common than realized with people cosplaying as people from popular SE games such as Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy and also non- SE games like The Tales of Abyss..
So yeah it's more common than noticed~~~ |
