I've always wanted to take the scenic train up the island, but i can't really be bothered without a good reason. I'm considering asking my parents about Auckgeddon/Scenic Train.

Would any Wellingtonians take it with me?

EDIT: Pricing means it more likely to be NakedBus.

Naked bus was $42, a 12 hour trip (although the dates they have available only go till the end of april, so price may be subject to change?)

Intercity is $45, a 10 hr 35 min trip.

Buses and trains are... a difficult option for me, cause I don't wanna miss a second of Auckgeddon, and cause geddon is conveniently placed between school days, I'm considering a Plane.......

(but then I'm freaked out about them taking my ~~explosive~~ hair sprayed filled wigs and weapons...)

i managed to get Zim Gir and Kutal up with out damage in 2 bags as well (and just enough normal clothes for the other days)
you just have to tell them when you get on to put fragile on them. we flew Virginblue and they were pretty nice.
and plane is Fastest. we try fly just cos it means you can leave after work and get there with enough time to sleep

The overlander from Wgtn-Akl is relly nice, but reeeeeally long! I took it during the day, 'bout 7-7, nd it was beautiful - but really difficult to get any sleep. The seats are just not that comfortable, particularly if you're tall. Shorties may find it easier, but because the seats don't recline very much, you'll want one of those dinky neckpillows...

From memory it was about $99 each way - we flew home.

there is its the air bus and costs $15 each way $13 if youre a student its outside the departure hall ... there is signage =3

plenty but they stop after 10:30pm
got caught out on that one last year as our plane was late. gah, oh well shuttle buss to the rescue

The train leaves Auckland at around 7.30 am and arrives in Wellington at around 7.30 pm.

The seats in the last carriage are comfier than the first carriage. It is painful and somewhat boring just being inside the train for 12 hours. Watch out for the toilets. They usually get disgusting later on in the journey.

I suggest you sit on the left side of the train to and from Wellington because the scenery seems to be a lot better. Take pictures in National Park and never forget to bring your iPod if you have one. You might get sleepy during the trip.

Wear comfy clothes in the train.

The ChCh people going to DnDn had nothing but bad things to say about Naked bus. They forgot to get some gear out, and the driver did not empty the locker fully at the end of run, and drove back to CHCH. Then the only way to contact them was to ring a $20 0900 number. Or internet.

hrm. interesting news about the locker not being emptied...

but yeah, bus from wellington to auckland is a lonnnnggg trip. i used to do it overnight when i'd just moved to wellington. train isn't as bad, when they had the backpacker carriages they were cheaper, but noisy cause they were the old poorly insulated ones.

plane is pretty cost competive these days, but the airport express bus is as someone said $15 each way, or $22 if you buy a return ticket. found that out on the return trip last time. sad
