Where do i start??? [n00b help]

Im going to ask a question, but you gotta promise not to murder me till AFTER you aanswer.

What do i do to cosplay? Where do i start?

I have concept sketches, i have measurements, i have money for fabric. My mother's one of those people who says "Do one thing at a time" so im guessing shes gonna be that way if she agrees to let me cosplay. So i need to know, what first? top? Bottoms? Shoes? wig? I was thinking of making a bag first, because even though the character doesn't have a bag, it seems like a good start.

i really dont understand my mother. she lets me go out in public dressed as Jack Sparrow, but doesnt want me to sew in private...

Hmmm well I wouldn't do the shoes or the wig first. Personally I start with the basic outfit, and build up to accessories. And if it is your first cosplay, maybe start with an easy bit first. Who am I kidding, I still do that too Razz

His blue and yellow outfit? Then I would say the pants and like the wristband (although you'd probably do that when you got the fabric for the jacket). The black vest could be a good start as well idk.

I'm usually running to a deadline that I'm having trouble meeting, so I work in order of priority. Are there one or two (or three or four) things that TOTALLY define the costume, that without, it's just not the costume? If so, I start there. For Riku, I'd say the chaps (the overpants) and the shirt. Coz really, if I ran out of time, I'd wear my everyday plan black pants under the chaps and run with it, but if I didn't have the chaps, it wouldn't be Riku. From there I go to the next most distinctive thing - in Riku's case I'd say wig. Then gloves/wrists/ankles and then shoes, because the shoes have the least impact/work ratio. Modifying shoes is a nuisance and can be left until everything else is done and ready because awesome shoes wont save a crappy costume but wearing your everyday sneakers wont kill an awesome one.

That made a lot of sense, thankyou.

I talked to my mother about it and she made a few deals with me. If i can make a plushie toy, she'll get me fabric and let me make the chaps. it i get that done, then i can do the top, and so on in that fashion. And of course, tis all reliant on my grades as well.

Does anyoe know of a good Axel Plushie Pattern?

EDIT: oh, and i forgot to mention - Im not allowed to flatten my chast. ever. Probably because my mother knows after i've done it for cosplay ill just keep doing it.

Might not be an issue for flattening your chest. You're thirteen right? "How big can they be? I don't mean to be rude... But how about getting a nice tight sports bra, coz they're really handy anyway, and then wear a singlet that's about two sizes too small.

Heh, they're actually a lot bigger than you'd expect. I started at ten and idn't stop till twelve. Twas something i got teased about till the other girl got them. Then they were jealous ^_^" but they are big enough to give me problems finding fitting shirts.

I think ill just make it is the style of a female shirt, i would be to lazy to bother putting on a sports bra and singlet....

I start with tops. Or would. I've only cosplayed a coat and then Japanese hakama + haori xD.

But yeah, I can imagine myself starting with the top, and then to the bottom and worry about small details later as well as shoes (unless I find ones that I can use in a shop) and wigs. I'd also start with inner layers. Say if the character had three tops on (like a shirt, vest, coat) then I'd start with the shirt, then the vest, then the coat. Probably.

But it's really up to you what to do first, but start with one of the main clothing articles. -nodno- (Yeah, I know you've already decided, just adding my two cents <: )

I think riku just wears that Vest/Singlet thingie as a shirt, so i think ill just follow the order i already have.
