Does anyone have any tips for making your own patterns and sewing from them? I've never really used one before (Saber skirt was made up entirely, whee) and would like some !tips pleease :)

I only ask because I'm planning to do Kallen.

I find making your own patterns kinda easy...
I go completely by ear really.

I spend sometime looking at the costume to see where the seams, darts etc, are. Then, because I am poor, I take out cooking-paper and draw the basic shape of the pattern then using the measurements, change the needed area to fit.
To save on paper and time I only draw Half the large patterns as you know they can just go on the fold.
(plus add the seam allowance...I tend to forget to alot of the time...lol)

I just finished making a pattern for a sci-fi dress I am making my mate in Germany, and after the fitting, I only have to adjust it a tiny bit...

There maybe better ways to do it, but that is the way I have found is best for me Very Happy

It's always handy to modify patterns - go get some burda magazines from the library and trace a bunch of basic ones. Freebies FTW!

Val uses Newspaper. It's generally just a game of measurements - my Flonne costume, which Val made for me, used no patterns whatsoever. And that included a boob-tube/faux-corset thing. Modifying patterns is what I usually do though - I don't remember which patterns company it is, and I can't find the bookmark for you coz my laptop's gone in for repairs (using my sister's one right now), but one of them actually has a user-submission online pattern download site, where you can download lots of (really nice!) free patterns. Might be McCalls or Burda? Maybe it's simplicity... Some googling will find it for you. :) *starts hunting for it herself*

I love modifying Patterns Very Happy

I have like 50 of them that I know can be used for different costumes Very Happy

I just got a new one that can be used for my Quistis Very Happy

(Trademe is wonderful for things like that)

I am addicted to the Pattern Sites, like McCalls and even Vogue has some good ones Very Happy

there is a site called sewingpatterns.com that has nearly ever companies patterns on there, and you can download them, but not for free..,buts it great! Very Happy

Sometimes, if I have clothing which is similar, I will trace around each piece of it (where the seam lines are) onto my fabric. Putting it onto newspaper would be a better idea sweatdrop

Even though I have about 10 patterns I always get too lazy to unfold them XD
