| @Hoggs: it'll work, I've done some research on it. :) There's a tut up on forumotion for how to do it as well.
@angie: good point.  |

| Hrm, just looked myself, it looks like they want to manage the domain themselves. We may be able to work around that. ;o |

| From what I saw a month or two back when I looked there shouldn't be any issues. I usually prefer to use A records for hosting, but since there's a chance forumotion may change the server ip a CNAME might be better as long as we know which address to CNAME it to. |

| A record won't work, since the IP would host multiple forums based on vhost settings, I'm just not sure if a CNAME carries the original host to the server.. one sec, I'll test with one of my domains. =) |

| A record would work fine provided they don't actually have more than one IP for load balancing. No effect whatsoever on vhosts since that's done based on the hostname requested as part of the client headers in the http request.
The A record is just a direct Address Record. The CNAME is essentially an alias to another address. You're not supposed to CNAME to a CNAME, but it is doable. Usually it's a CNAME to an A record address. |

| hrm, ok, looks like they are just using a single A record for the forums, no load balancing or anything. Or if they do it's hidden behind a single IP.

Re: URL change?

| Eh, A records only point to IP addresses, which forumotion would then pick the right site based on the host sent in the headers (vhost)
Our domain would be unknown to forumotion, are there domain linking settings in the admin panel? Then it will be possible.
http://cnztest.icanhaswebsite.com/
I gave CNAME a go above, as you can see forumotion doesn't recognise it, and points us to cnztest forum (I lol'd)
So uh, are there domain linking settings in the admin panel? |

| Yes there are options to specify the host address, which should be translated into a vhost entry for the forum.
It should be under "Administration Panel=>General=>Forum=>Forum address=>Personalized domain name" or thereabouts based on what i've read.
Just so you don't get the wrong idea I also run dns, smtp, and http with vhosts on servers.

| Likewise. ^_^
Alright, good. If those settings translate to vhost settings we're set. Hopefully we can run parallel on both domains until people get used to it. |

| They're not the most straightforward to find the details for using your own domain and I don't have access to the admin panel myself, but you can piece it together reading the following two. http://help.forumotion.com/frequently-asked-questions-f5/why-should-i-choose-a-domain-name-for-my-forum-and-how-t22302.htm http://help.forumotion.com/frequently-asked-questions-f5/redirect-an-extern-domain-name-that-you-own-to-your-board-t7021.htm
The first link mentions force forwarding to redirect the old address to the new forum address. Despite the stupid web gui, the second basically details creating a CNAME pointing to the old forum hostname address which should marry up with the server that has the vhost the forum is actually running on. Along with where to enter the new address details in the forums admin panel. |

| LMAO, nah I think an equilibrium has been reached. No deaths or sacrifices to the forum will be needed today.
Now some light humour for the geeks here that have worked with sendmail before. It's not dns or http related but you get the idea.
