Amount of fabric?
Post By Rolly. 12/09/08, 09:15 am

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo.....

Having decided on my 2nd cosplay~ I wanna do Ryuuguu Rena!!! From Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

BUT, I'm not sure how much fabric to buy, due to.... err noobie experiences.
My main concern is the white fabric, mostly her hat and her one piece. I'm thinking about 5 metres.
Then it's the purple bits, for the bow and edges. I'm thinking 1-2 metres for purple.
Would I also need to make a small petticoat?

So yeah, I'll stick a pic up. In this one, she's standing in water so her skirt's floating up.

He's a full length pic, but it's not very clear:

^_^;;; If you need more pics feel free to ask, I'll look for some more.

Thanks peeps!

2 metres should do you fine for the dress - but it will depend on how much flare you put into the bottom. Always cut the main dress pieces first - that way if you do run out, sleeves don't use up much and you'll only have to buy an extra half-metre or so.

:) I have concluded from several anime scenes that her skirt reaches up to just under her knees.

Hmmm.... flare? A little bit to give it a ripply feeling, but going overkill with it. What sort of fabric should I buy to? I'm also planning to do a boot cover, what sort of fabric should I use for that, too? The laces... do you think I'll be able to buy that at Spotlight or something? Brown, boot laces.... mmmm..... I'll need a lot of that.

I suggest stretch bengaline. It's relatively cheap, very easy to sew and works very well for most things. You may need to line it becaus it's such a pale colour (not sure how see-though it is). I've used it for boot covers before, but they were stitched directlyto the boots - pass on how to get them good for removable ones, sorry!

I'll take a look at Spotlight - hopefully I'll be able to find something that suits. ^_^
Do you think I'll be able to build a removable boot cover on top of one of my sneakers? What sort of shoes do you think should be used as a base? I want them back though. XD

For the pattern of her one piece, do you think I should sew it in 2 sections or one piece? Her top bit and skirt. Or somehow work it out? :/

Well...not sure what her shoes look like but I'd suggest cheap warehouse ug boots. I've never tried making covers for sneakers, but I think it'll be pretty difficult to make them look like anything BUT sneakers. You could (and should) totally prove me wrong on that though XP

Boot covers for sneakers are good. 8D I just made some for Etna, and they look fine. Then again, I did make them out of upholstery vinyl (the kind you find table clothes made of >>) so you can't see the detailing on the sneakers as the vinyls so damn thick. (poor sewing machine..) If you make them out of stretch you may see the eyelets/patterns come through. May.

Ugg boots if you've got the $ lying around would be ideal though. :) I know what it's like to be cheap with cosplay though. XD;;

To get the sneakers back all you have to do is use electrical tape to tie down the lose fabric at the sole of the shoe. It's very durable, surprisingly. My Kairi shoes where pretty much made of the stuff on the bottoms and they lasted 3 solid days of wearing them in town - interview, DO + Chch Geddon.

Just make sure that the fit is snug to prevent them falling down, heh. :) good luck~

@aurellion: ....I am so trying that next time! I was wondering how you'd get rid of the sneaker-texture..

It sounds a bit confusing, do you mind showing me some pictures if possible?

But the upholstery vinyl, you mean the plasticy tablecloth cover thingy that you put over the actually cloth cloth to stop spills staining the table? Or the one with texture?
The boot you made over your sneakers... are they removable? 'cause they sound like so. It'll be convenient if I want boots and slip them on, and if sneakers to slip them off. You know what I mean? ;D

Do you know what fabric is used in this tutorial? :/

I'm going to Spotlight on Tues, let's hope I can get stuff sorted by then. ;)
Since I dun have a sewing machine, I hope I can make it somewhat near Auckgeddon. If not, I'll wait for the next opportunity. XD

Ahah, I would love to post pictures, but there's one problem with that: I have camera, and lead, but no battery for camera. It's one of the models where you take out the battry for charging, and I seem to have misplaced said battery, because I fail at life. >< sorry! if I find it I'll try and post some though :)

Uh.. the vinyl they sell at spotlight for $17.99? 8D It's.. it's... got a matte texture on top, comes in black, white, grey or green, is very thick, and the underside is grey and lined and has a funky texture to it that's all woah and horrible if you run your nails down it. By the tablecloth bit I meant it's kinda like those garishly coloured cheap ones you get at the $2 shop and see at sausage sizzles. >>

Uhh, no, I don't, I've been meaning to work that out myself for a while. I don't know. >>

If you don't have a sewing machine, definitely don't make them out of vinyl, you hands will DIE otherwise. D: I strongly recommend you get a machine though, especially as you seem pretty keen on cosplay. Christmas is coming up? I got my machine for Christmas~ <3

Ah no worries! If you have a scanner you could try scanning the image on for me.... XD

Then again, about the Sewing machine... I don't think I'll be getting one anytime soon. D;
Oh well.

Yesterday I spent an hour at Spotlight finding the fabric... then I opted for polycotton because they were on special.... hahaha...
The totally came to $30.90 plus 2 bundles of thread and a wooden rod. It broke though, with all that knocking around in the city. D:
I didn't get a chance to buy any boot cover material.... I'll make another trip in the holidays once I find out what sort of fabric it is.

Anyways! I'm going to start sorting out my pattern soon, but I'll need some help with her sleeves.... how do you get that bouncy puffed up look? :)
And, some tips on making the skirt's flarey/ripply look? Like, how the skirt appears puffed out slightly too?
And her hat.... ohohohoho..... XD I'm going for suicide on this one, I don't even know how to make them!!! XDDDD
