Patterned fabric (bodysuit material) By Pixel. 13/05/13, 11:45 am |
| I'm going to be attempting Calhoun from Wreck it Ralph and I'm so stuck on fabric for her bodysuit (I did try google okay ;; hides from kiwi thread anons)
Heeeres a full body picture http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20121111204805/protagonist/images/1/18/Detona-Ralph-31.jpeg
And this is the material im stuck on
- Spoiler:
Has anyone used this kind of material/knows of someone who has used something like this or knows where to get it or seen it at spotlight etc?
I'm really bad with my material, what should I be looking for? Something stretchy and rather thick I guess? I'm stuck on names... I've got to start somewhere right? Don't worry if it turns out badly, I won't be wearing it if that happens! And I could go with a plain bodysuit if needed.
Thank you~ |

| Spotlight generally doesn't have that so i'd try online. I say this because they never even have normal stretch pvc spandex etc. Ebay or spandexhouse.com there was another good site but yeah try online. Also buy an extra couple of metres just in case.

I found that looking for hexagon/honeycomb fabric if that helps. It probably has more names I can't think of too. I found another seller but it's $44USD a yard so not sure if you want the link? |

| For a catsuit that's comfortable and that you can move well in, you'll want a four-way stretch - look for spandex and lycra, you might find other stuff, but it's best if you can touch it and gauge the feel of it (rather than ordering it online). Spandexhouse.com have HEAPS of printed spandexes, you might find something there!
And lol, this is a tough to find fabric - don't feel bad for asking. You can also get stuff like this custom printed, but it is very expensive! |

| Thanks so much!! I'll have a good look through that spandexhouse c:
As a first time making one of these, should I make a bodysuit from scratch following directions online? I was thinking of taking apart some leggings and tight shirts to trace a pattern from but idk ah |

| Have you ever drafted a pattern before? If not, maybe buy a commercial pattern and see how it looks - it's a nice basic garment, and since it's going to be stretchy, you can fudge the fit and it'll be fine! The main thing with catsuits is to get the torso length right, or cameltoe happens, and that's not a good thing. You can definitely trace out a pair of leggings/tight shirts - if you're on a budget, do that :) But maybe make a mockup afterwards to check the fit, you should be able to find some cheap stretchy fabric somewhere to mess around with.
With spandexhouse - their ordering system is odd, and email them for a shipping quote first! Really nice quality fabrics though, and cheap-ish for what they are. |

| I bought Kwik Sew 3052 when I did my Kitty cosplay, and that was great. It includes instructions on how to go about modifying the pattern so that the torso/leg length is right as well. |

| Or there's also the book Pattern Making for Fashion Design by Helen Joseph Armstrong which has a section on dance wear, including how to draft a leotard. It'll most likely be at your local library. It's in inches though, so you'll have to convert it P: |

| Also patternschool.com - however, you will need to know a little bit about pattern drafting for this one! It does have a lot of great tips on working with stretch fabrics, though. |
