Oh hey~

Today, my friend (Lolwut) and I happened to get official approval from our school to start an anime club~!! 8 D We're really excited and I was thinking about how other anime clubs operated and everything else > < Since we really don't know much apart from the obvious; watching anime, reading manga, discussing, homework help, etc., I would like some opinions from you people on how to operate and stuff. We're going to get a lunchtime/after school once per week or so and it's not going to be compulsory to come every time. There will be people aged from Year 9 to Year 13 (expecting more seniors) and Mr.Head-of-Middle-School said that it's not going to be compulsory to have a supervising teacher. I'm not expecting any major otakus though, seeing as my school practically knows hardly anything about anime. And I was wondering about how we should be showing our anime; a few episodes of one anime the first week and another few episodes of a different anime the next, or just continue to watch through the entire season until its finished? And should I start making a website/forum for our club? Opinions please~ 8 D

Congrats on the animu club 8D
I suggest watching an episode or 2 of an anime each session and ask them every week after the showing if they wanna see more of the anime next session or something. If they're finding the anime dragging on too long, watch another anime :3 But if they're enjoying it, keep on going with that one~

Don't do what our club does and show one episode of an anime and not watch the rest. Take suggestions. I would suggest Hetalia but then I'm a freak. Hmm... I-I'm not sure what else.

Okay. But anyway, thank you so much for your suggestions! Since there will be lots of people that don't understand Anime as much, we might present to them some basics. Something not too complicated, something that doesn't require too much of Otaku-knowledge...

AND NOT SHOUJO.

Hetalia is a little too off-putting for beginners - impossibly fast subs. >_>;; And Yaoi fanservice in the English dub. So not for beginners.

Speaking from experience as a club founder here. Try and show anime that are attention grabbing from the start. People dont buy into the "It'll get better later" business.

Oh and get your tech stuff sorted BEFOREHAND. Nothing worse than being unable to play/display the anime you bring.

Heh, what we used to do is show the first episode or 2 of an anime, and if people liked it they can come find us for the rest of the show.

Start with action packed shows, and you can then later switch to slice-of-life, or other types. It's hard to please everyone, bear in mind.

TTGL seemed to have been a hit, but when we did it TTGL wasn't licensed. As we made it so we won't show R4 licensed shows without the official DVD. You can also show short AMVs or something while you wait for everyone to come. We did that and it was a load of fun

Thanks for the idea~ *u* Lolwut and I were thinking about showing a few OVAs and movies first (Lolwut and another friend really wanted to show them Summer Wars specifically), but I think that the 'a few episodes per week' is also pretty good. And as for action-packed shows, do you think that Darker than Black, Code Geass, Full Metal Panic, Full Metal Alchemist, Eureka Seven would be good ideas? = =;; It's kinda annoying how a large percentage of the people coming will most likely be boys and thus, they may have entirely different tastes to us... (OTL narutards...) But otherwise, shonen and seinen would be the best choices, right? nodnod

Oh, by the way, don't be disappointed if only very few people don't show up.
If you advertise well enough, you're sure to get more members. Also, the people you do have from the start will hopefully try to coax their friends into joining up.

Our club is pretty small OTL But that doesn't stop it being fun!

You should do what works for your members. So ask them. But to start I suggest an episode each of a variety of really different anime so you can gauge the interests of people. Remembering you will need to keep the rating to the lowest ages coming to keep the school happy. (Personally I would prefer say 2-3 episodes/week, giving 6 weeks to view a short series, and 12 to view a long one. People may stick around for 26 weeks to view 1 episode/week, but probably not? Or you can view movies, or OVA's which are shorter.)

I suggest you do make sure you view anime so it doesn't turn into a social/otaku/fan/fan art club. However I suggest you offer some social activities or social time. With say an hour lunch time, then by the time people arrive, and leave, and talk, etc., then it may not be possible to show more than 1/2 hour of anime anyway, so it may be hard to offer much social time. Maybe one meeting a month as social. If you theme it as a anime quiz show (eg. Excel Saga or Happy Lesson, etc.) or keep it 'normal' may depend totally on the people coming. But having people get to know each other as a group rather than just go to a location to view anime is more likely to keep people coming. I certainly know it is what keeps me enthused for Cosplay.

But again, the most important thing is to get to know the people in your group and what they want.

Yeah as a vice anime club leader myself, its always good to show what people wanna see.
Don't forget to constantly advertise every now and then! Putting up posters infront of the japanese classroom windows seemed to work well for us. Very Happy

For anime to show, I would take charge and show them something suitable and just keep on showing it if they like it. Usually the anime we show have two seasons so we stop at the first season when they dislike it or carry on if they do.

At the moment we are showing K-on! and its working for now X3

You guys are juniors, so the juniors are much like you, whereas the seniors go "... it's run by juniors, they're gonna be narutards and hyperactive". (Generally what happens at my school - not that the anime club got far) Seriously, hyperactive hardcore anime 'otakus' are a real turn off. And if all the younger people spend the entire time screaming and going "IT'S SO KAWAII", the seniors aren't gonna want to go xD (unless some seniors are like that, but that general behaviour is mostly kept to the juniors xD)
