Bra'tac's shiny head piece (Stargate) or other non-seamed 'bald cap' hat. By Retro Scifi. 06/02/11, 09:14 am |
| Hi,
During a recent Stargate SG1 marathon (yes, I am that lacking in decent new SciFi) I've been trying to work out how to make a close fitting hat like Bra'tac's.
Problems are:
1) It's shiny. 2) There's no seam 3) It looks thicker than, say, a stretch fabric one would be and isn't as floppy, either.
From the side:
From the back:
At this stage I'm trying to avoid going the whole hog and casting it in a several stage process eventually into a rubber mask.
Any ideas as to how to do it in any other way?
Cheers =] |

| It might be possible to find a fully black swimming cap? Or a yellow one painted/dyed but I don't know how that would work out.
Shave your head and paint it. 8D |

| LOL I think you'd have to have pretty short hair to get away with this thing anyway, and/or a bald cap underneath.
I was wondering about a swimming cap. I'll have to experiment with one and see how it goes. I'm not convinced it'd be big enough, but I think a test would at least say if we're on the right lines or not... Watch this space. |

| you could probably use a swim cap as a base to at lease compress your hair and smooth it out to then put the actual cap over the top? Although looking at it it does look kinda moulded, but with a leather/vinyl look to it.. |

| You could always try a paper-mache hat. |

| I'd go with swimming cap and/or bald cap underneath? You could always make the cap itself out of latex, which you can put paint into to get the correct colour.
Edit: Search up making bald caps with latex, because that's basically what it looks like?

| I've seen bald caps in the "jokes" section of $2 stores. Pressuming they're still made the same way like the one my brother had years ago, it's exactly the same shape. The only draw back was the latex/rubber was thin, and it split after he put it on mulitple times in 1 day.
If you're going to mould your own though, I suggest mixing aluminium pigment (and black pigment) into the latex - because obviously if you paint on top it will crack and flake if you stretch it. (Or you mix up up a small amount and pour it on top on the swimming/blad cap to make it thicker.)
But if you're stuck on painting it; from memory (don't hold me to this I'll have to dig up my notes and check it out) you add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to the paint to break up the suface tension allowing it some flexability. |

| Wow, ok, thanks guys - that gives me a few more ideas. I particularly like the one about mixing the pigment in with the latex rather than painting it afterwards.
The one used for TV doesn't look that flexible, but obviously a swimming cap will be.
If I could get it smooth enough, a paper-mache could work, too.
I also wondered about a felt hat that was then painted with pre-pigmented liquid latex. I know if you get felt wet you can shape it. Hmm, some experiments are called for methinks. |

| Not sure if this helps, but saw a tutorial for making a cap (with an idea for the pattern) here: http://www.cosplaysupplies.com/tutorials.php?id=11

| Felt hat shaped with hot water, let dry cut to shape and then yes, latex over that :) I'd recommend a plain first layer then some with cabosil mixed in as it's easier to smooth the lumps from the felt that way and then a layer of latex mixed with silver and black (with some red to tone it to a dark bronze) acrylic paint.
And then a powder with silver pearlex or similar (it's a mica powder so a high quality silver eyeshadow could also work). It'll detackify the latex and add extra sheen :) |
