Mmm - I was aware of as such. Ie, there's a huge renfaire in taupo each year, and I know they have proper jousting tournaments - and indeed, the costuming/prop making is far more extensive than anything which can be found in cosplay. I know that a lot of it is about historical context and accuracy, and all up 'historical costuming' was the most truncated term I could find, however brief a description it may be.

In terms of roleplaying vs. reenacting - it's difficult, because TECHNICALLY, like, dictionary definition, role playing is literally "To take on another role". In this sense, roleplaying should generally cover all forms of reenacting, cosplay, etc., as well as demonstrative roleplay (remember those awkward roleplays you did in health class? ;)), online roleplay, LARPs, theraputic roleplay, tabletop roleplay (DnD), Role playing GAMES, and so on so forth.

Unfortunately, for many, the term roleplay has been (somewhat inaccurately) restricted to tabletop roleplay, so awkward and inaccurate as the term is, I've been having to use the term re-enacting with interviewees in this documentary so as not to be misunderstood. x_x Really, we're studying roleplay (as an umbrella term, though restricted to the various aspects of live roleplay as a hobby), but because of this, we've been forced to use the term reenacting, even though it isn't exactly the right term (especially for cosplay!). Hence the use of "roleplay/reenacting/whatever" earlier. :3

i would come as long as ...

1. i'm not working
2. i'm not studying
3. i have money in my bank account and rent and various expenses aren't a problem
4. some other unlikely emergency doesn't come up
5. it's not too far from civilisation i.e. must be near a big city ... i'm a city girl .... i feel a little lost if i'm in the country for an extended period of time XD

I'd need to get permission from my parents to go, so I'd have to convince them first. XD
But other than that, as long as the date is fine and it's not too expensive I'm all for it. Very Happy

how about welly armageddon next year stay at a motor camp (tenting will be dirt cheap around $15 a night and if we did it in the school holidays we could have a 4 day weekend (one day before one day after arma) costing around $60 a head plus food and Transport (there is a really good public transport system in welly

Yeah wellington sounds good, most of us will be there, and its in the middle of the island so its fairest location.

It also is ralatively cheap and it is a rather large con compared to christchurch

ChCh is also only in it's second year after all. I still think Auckland kicks both their collective behinds, but part of thats the fact that the Aotea Centre is just a good venue. They could improve crowd flows if they planned things a bit better, but it still beats Wellington & ChCh which essentially compress everyone into one space = not so good. sad

Aotea Center IS a better 'Geddon venue, I'll give them that. I'm not sure why Bill is so determined to stay at TSB, I'm sure there are other places just as good in town... although maybe not in central city. Eh.

Thats an interesting idea; have the wellygeddons of all wellygeddons by bringing as many people as possible...

Of course going to Wellington would take forever, but I've never been there in my entire life so it'd be awesome. <3 <3

Would it be useful to 'piggyback' the cosplay weekend with an Armageddon (hold it on the same weekend)? Or would most people feel that they wouldn't want to spend much time away from the convention? Just in terms of travel/accomodation expenses, some people would be able to justify spending a little more if it was for both Armageddon and a cosplay gathering. Some costume conventions in the US are held in a hotel - like, say for a trial run, to book a hotel ball/convention room, and hold workshops, photoshoots, skits, mini competitions, and a dinner/dance. These could be held after Armageddon hours, or the day before/after Armgeddon...

I don't know, just throwing ideas around.

lol, afaik nothing has been planned.
The idea is to get all the cosplayers in NZ to meet up somewhere for the weekend. Have games, photoshoots, contest (probably) and lotsa fun.

Its just been a big discussion on what we're gonna do and how we're gonna do it~
