Wedding in Costume - would you want a marriage celebrant who is into cosplay? By OmnivoreNZ. 28/01/11, 11:06 pm |
| A quick explanation:
Two good friends are getting married soon, in a heavily science fiction themed wedding (Dr Who - we're building a radio controlled Dalek to carry the ring up the aisle). They wanted a marriage celebrant who, in their words, "wasn't laughing at us inside". So ... they asked me (as a science fiction/cosplay type person) to apply to become a celebrant. Now I have to convince the Department of Internal Affairs that there is a need for someone who is sympathetic to the whole costuming mind-set.
Any comments about whether you, if you were getting married, would want someone who understood the mind-set of the cosplayer?
If people don't mind, I may want to quote some comments to the bureaucracy.
Thanks, OmnivoreNZ (Charles) |

| Really, if they want to laugh, then so what, who cares? It is supposed to be fun anyway, it is a happy time and all that, and lets face it, Im sure that whoever the celebrant is, they have probably encountered a few srsly weird weddings (and a few dull ones too), but I suspect that they could easily be drawn into the fun mood of things as long as those in costume are not being tossers.
I dont have much advice on becoming a celebrant, but lets face it, it is how the theme is being portrayed and displayed that governs how it is received by the non costumers, not the other way around (a wedding dress is not a costume in itself?).
I guess to answer the question, I wouldnt necessarily want someone who has to be able to get into the mind of a cosplayer, but I would like someone who is able to have a bit of fun, a laugh, and generally isnt too judgmental.

| If two normal people didn't want to have a white wedding, but instead, had a pink-themed wedding, are you going to criticise them otherwise because they wanted to remember their fun and memorable wedding?
I saw some pretty interesting weddings, including a few on the show "Hitched" (LOTR themed wedding! ). These are perfectly normal ways to wed and I don't see why you have to laugh at these people. Yet, some people do laugh, and this causes the bride and groom to feel awkward, which is not really a memorable moment.
There needs to be more celebrants with similar interests, so that everyone can have a good time |

| TBH most of the celebrants I've met are outgoing theatrical types :) - most would really dig costumes!

| Check out Offbeat Bride.
I plan on having a Steampunk Starwars wedding (whenver it happens) and anyone that is going to judge me for what I plan to do will not end up being involved in any way, shape or form. I don't think vendors or celebrants need to be specifically targeted at whichever subculture, there just needs to be more that are accepting of things that are outside the 'normal' box. |

| First off, a Doctor Who themed wedding is a brilliant idea! It's something I am considering for my future
And I would agree with everyone in that there doesn't need to be a specific kind of celebrant just a good open minded fun one. Though having one that was specifically into sci-fi themed ones would be an awesome find |
