Going grey?
Post By ManOfManyMasks. 26/08/10, 11:04 am

Hello there, I'm new to all this stuff and was just looking at some pics of Hair Vs. Wigs and have decided that just your normal hair looks alot more realistic and not so over the top which suits a couple of the characters i'm thinking of playing.

But the question I would like to ask is, my character has grey hair, I've heard a few ideas on how to make your hair look grey including talc powder and so on.
any suggestions/hints/tips for realistic looking grey hair?

Cheers.

A wig is going to look a lot better than painting your hair or something.

Really. Those spray paints and things look pretty bad, so unless you're willing to lighten your hair and then dye it grey, that's going to be your best option.

Agree with Le Saboteur. A pet peeve of mine is when cosplayers use their own hair. It can look good if your hair is exactly the same style colour and length, but otherwise it just looks like you couldn't be bothered to get a wig.

I think the problem he's facing is that he's looking for advice on how to grey his hair for Inspector Javert (correct me if I'm wrong, Todd).
And... Javert's hair isn't fully grey, IIRC, it's brown and greying.

allot of bleachs and then a light blue rinse will make it grey but ur hair will suffer a great deal of damage if its dark , if u decide to go with the bleaching u have to do the ends first and on the last go do ur roots or u will burn ur scalp and most likely give ur self a chemical hair cut

hope this helps

its alot of work u basically need to get ur hair to no pigment blonde ( itll look almost white ) and to achive this with out dramatic damage i would advise slowly lightening it ova time

but a wig could be the best way to go

Yeah basicly what the previous post said.

But your hair really won't suffer that much, unless it is reallyreallyREALLY thin, or you're going bald...

If neither, than go for it ;P
Or you could try using talcum powder/white facepaint
(wierd, but it works... gets a tad gunky though)

Also you could just try getting a wig.. XD
Just detangle it (with silicone or something) straighten it.. and yeah it would work for that pirate or whatever dude XD

Bleach will damage your hair. From dark brown to grey? Don't do it at home, theres a 90% plus chance it's going to go wrong. Wear a wig, seriously, the amount of time and money you'll have to put in to get your hair to that level is ridiculous for a cosplay, and then you're going t have horribly damaged hair (that part is unavoidable) and have to cut your ends off(otherwise you get snapping, bleach frizz). How damaged depends on your hair and the bleach you use, but you could need o cut off up to an inch or three from your ends to get to relatively healthy hair again.

Plus, Even after bleaching it you'll have (in the best case) light yellow hair which has to be toned to the grey, and if you're not careful, you end up with green instead or grey.

PLEASE get a wig. lol
