Auckland D&D Group - Let's try this again... By burning batsu. 17/08/10, 04:15 pm |
| Ok, let's try this again, I was planning on organising a D&D group in the past but it never really took off due to other major commitments that ate up most of my time and the fact that I was on shift-based work (Yay for bus driving x_x ) I'm back to what can be considered a steady schedule again, so I'm gonna give it another shot.
Basically I'm interested in organising a D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) group if there is anyone out there keen that lives in the auckland area, it would most likely be on each alternate Sunday Night (so once a fortnight), maybe starting around 5-6pm and going till whenever we got bored. Dependant on where people that are interested live I can either see about hosting it where I live in Albany, or if other group-members are interested we can alternate houses each session.
I will probably act as the DM for the group since I have pretty much all the required material to run campaigns, also now that I am no longer driving buses and am on a set Tuesday-Saturday working week I will almost always have sundays free.
You would be required to supply your own set of dice, and a copy of the version 4.0 rulebook (Either hardback or digital - I can help you if you have ebook software with a digital copy), and we'd all chip in towards food (be it pizza or whatever we felt like having that particular week)
If you are interested, feel free to make a reply here, or drop me a PM if you're feeling a bit shy about admitting you like D&D
Dice-wise here is a typical dice set, but it is recommended to bring extra d6's as the group progresses.
•One 4-sided die •Four 6-sided dice •One 8-sided die •One 10-sided die •One percentile die (a dice with 00-90 on a total of 10 sides) •One 12-sided die •One 20-sided die

| Eww, 4e. I'll pass. Besides, running my group is more than enough D&D in my week lmao |

| Main reason I'm doing 4th ed is because most of the other groups I know of that are being run by friends/acquaintances are also doing 4th ed, plus sanctioned D&D games are run using 4th edition rules, thus making generated characters able to be used there, and more simply because I own 4th ed books, not 3.5, and money is far too tight to fork out for a full set of 3.5 DM books. |

| All of which are perfectly good reasons, and none of which make me desire to attend C: |

| I <3 D&D dice. My local wargames has sets of D&D dice made from semi-precious stones (like tiger-eye and stuff). VERY expensive, but so pretty. I'm in Wellington so I couldn't join in anyway. Whats your particular objection to 4e? I've only played one campaign on it, and it was a GM I later realised was not a very good GM. |

I intensely dislike how streamlined it is. I skimmed over the rules, and they took out all the rules-on-how-to-do-pretty-much-anything ideal.
My favorite example is that of Decipher Script. In 4e, all codebreaking is done with an Int check (correct me if I am wrong on that point). My objection is that YOU CANNOT BREAK CODES JUST BY BEING SMART IF THEY ARE ANY GOOD. To break codes beyond the trivial, you need training. This may sound a little ridiculous, but 4e took some of the realism out of my fantasy game.
They dumbed it down, and I don't like it. I'm sure that many people will disagree with me and favour the new rules, but you asked |

| Well I suppose that sort of thing is a matter of taste. In my experience (limited as it is) I'm tending to enjoy the ones with less roll-play and more role-play. I'm playing a completely diceless campaign at the moment and my only problem with it is that it's cliche-infested. (We're reacting to the cliche's by meta-gaming abominably Whats that? A deserted derelict ship? EVERYBODY GO IN PAIRS. Skittering noise from the corner? Four people cover the noise and approach with caution.)

| Mod warning: Please try to respect OPs wishes in trying to gather interest for this particular game. If you wish to discuss D&D in general, maybe look into making a separate thread? Discussion of pros and cons of 4e is still related to this, but past that is pushing it really. >: |
