Haha, only saw it once, but the more epic quotes stick with you... though they may not be fully accurate. "Prognosis: Full physical recovery in six weeks. Psychologically, six months. Ability to spit at the back of my head... neutralised" It was enjoyable. Would love to see the sequel... wonder who moriarty would be. |

| I enjoyed the film, but it's definately not the best Sherlock Holmes adaptation. idk it just didn't really feel... right? |

Re: Sherlock Holmes By Sonic Reducer. 25/01/10, 08:05 am |
| I've read most of the stories and still am unsure how people call this adaptation unfaithful. While it wasn't dead on perfect, there was nothing in it that made it "unfaithful".
I enjoyed the film, though didn't enjoy how really its just a set up for a sequel.. so hopefully the sequel will be amazing. |

Re: Sherlock Holmes By Rowan. 28/01/10, 03:08 pm |
| I've been watching some interviews, and they've said that they've pulled on aspects from the books that haven't been explored so much before, but that are definitely present in the original canon. One thing that seems to be different from other adaptations (although I say this with out remembering much about whichever ones I've seen in the past) that people have mentioned is that Watson is given more of an equal role and not portrayed as a bumbling idiot. I doubt that's what he's like in the books!
I went and bought the Sherlock Holmes collection after seeing the movie for the first time :3 I haven't started it yet, but it should be good!
So totally my fav movie now <3 And Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law have been cemented as among my fav actors as well!
One little quote I remember (that hasn't been mentioned here) is "Take Watson..." "I intend to." Love that little interaction between Holmes and Mary at the dinner haha. Holmes looks so put out. |

Re: Sherlock Holmes By Sonic Reducer. 28/01/10, 04:27 pm |
| Indeed he wasn't an idiot, as described in the movie he was a capable solidier before joining holmes and an even more capable doctor and had deduction skills almost as good as holmes.
It just so happens with the tv series (one of the many) an actor popularised watson in such a fashion. poor him.

Re: Sherlock Holmes By P-Layton. 04/02/10, 03:04 am |
| Sherlock Holmes was really cool, one of the best movies ever. Sherlock Holmes FTW.
Anyway, Rowan, how you said that you doubted that Watson was a bumbling idiot the books, he was a bit, so how they say they've made the roles more equal, is very true.
By the way, did anyone notice a bit of House and Wilson in Sherlock Holmes? (Of course House is based of Sherlock Holmes, but still, did anyone notice it?) |

Re: Sherlock Holmes By Rowan. 04/02/10, 04:37 am |
| When I was discussing the movie with my mum after seeing it the second time, I kept going to call Watson Wilson. There are some similarities in House and Wilson's relationship, and I'm sure it is based on Sherlock Holmes, but to me the reason I kept mistaking the name was more that they sound so darn similar, and House was more frequent in my life than Sherlock Holmes! IMO there are alot of tv friendships based off of the Holmes and Watson dynamic, which is really kind of awesome And doubly awesome to see the original template in action, as it were |

Re: Sherlock Holmes By Sonic Reducer. 04/02/10, 01:40 pm |
| While Hugh is British and thus removes the whole aspect of guessing what kind of accent Mr Cocaine (note: I do think that Robert is a fantastic actor so any of his fans out there please don't hurt me) is faking. I just however couldn't buy Hugh fighting, mostly because he looks like me in 30 years time with shorter hair. And while I can hold my own in a fight even the smallest girl here will be laughing at that notion and wanting to prove me wrong. It just doesn't seem like it could ever happen.
The same does go for the majority of the previous Holmes acting lineage, which lead to most of the people who have watched every movie and series but never read the book to cry out and say "Holmes doesn't fight", while in the book series you could imagine Holmes in almost anyway you wanted that fitted in with the brief description, which mostly consisted of "hes a man and when hes bored he looks like hes on crack (mostly cause he is) and when hes happy hes dressed incredibly dapper", so you were convinced whenever you read the passages about Holmes' boxing career and the 50 different martial arts he suddenly seems to know to escape certain death. |

Re: Sherlock Holmes By Rowan. 04/02/10, 01:51 pm |
| Also on the fighting thing, one thing that was said in an interview was that London's crime underground in those times was INCREDIBLY dangerous, so of course Holmes and Watson would have had to be able to defend themselves when they're investigating cases and dealing with the scum of society. |

| Rowan, I couldn't agree more. Sonic Reducer said that Mr. Holmes used cocaine in canon (which is true), but they seemed to have changed it to alcohol in the movie. Strange. |

| I KNOW I'M JEALOUS. Oh RDJr, why so awesome? Had a conversation on the weekend that lapsed into adoring sighs over him~ And Jude Law is so smexy as Watson/HOTSON. And wow, now I sound shallow, like the only reason I loved the movie was coz of hot actors. I swear I loved the camera work, plot, writing, and costuming (of course!) just as much as the lead actors! <333333 |
