Dying non bleached hair (Fudge/Manic Panic etc)
Post By Reiko Arashi. 25/04/10, 04:56 am

Is it a largley HUGE big deal (i'm gonna use an example photo of around what hair color i have now) not to bleach hair when using such stuff as Manic Panic or Fudge?

Dying non bleached hair (Fudge/Manic Panic etc) N626957177_9031
(i'm hoping that's small enough, it's about 16 pixels out of the 250 range in one end)

I got a fudge paint in like magenta pink (HIDE PINK!) and i really dont know if my scalp can handle bleaching, ok more to the point it could and my hair could..... .___. but i dont know if i COULD due to needing employment, take that sort of risk with my hair.

As it is the dye itself lasts 20 washes or so (and melts everywhere, stains everything etc LOL. I had red dye like this once, so i know EXACTLY what it does.)

So i was just curious to opinion: Do i risk not bleaching it, and risk the color not showing - or do i suck it up and bleach a bit of my hair and just keep up with it? o_O

(Though, likley the amount of hours i really am available would make it very hard to find employment anyways)

Any opinions would be well thanked :)

I don't know too much ( errr, anything ) about bleaching hair. . =w=;;
but if you don't want to go for that, I'd say dying it blonde or get those hair lightener/dyes ~they work fine. I went from unatural black to fair blonde with them ( used two ) when I did my whole head pink ( though the pink dye brand was Paintbox ). And your hair looks pretty light-coloured.

The hair dye won't show up like you want - it will probably just tint your hair a kind of maroon colour. That's what happened to me!
If you want it to be pink in some way shape or form then bleach it first - as long as you go to a good hairdresser/use lots of hair restore/moisturising stuff. Or else get a wig?
Plus - like you said manic panic is temporary and pink fades super quick - so if you want a job just wash it heaps (anti-dandruff shampoo or baking soda helps this process)

I think you have to remember that bleach is permanent and that you will have to wait for it to grow out, it also damages your hair and tinting your hair on top of the dye multiple times can lead to more damage, which after hearing work stories from my mother the hairdresser, can eventually end to hair falling out.

If you can't tell I am not an advocate for bleaching, but if your hair grows quickly, it's your choice, Otherwise I would just go for a wig if you are needing pink hair.

I bleached my hair when i was younger it turned out horrible so i re dyed over it and it ruined my hair so badlyit became like straw all mattered together. Bleach is a horrible thing. If you are going to bleach your hair dont dye over it wait til it grow out and cut the bleached part off.

You'd be better off going to the hairdresser to get it dyed blonde rather than bleaching. (bit more costly) or just buying a pink wig.

Well i look REALLY crappy in wigs because of my head shape, and my hair has been bleached before and i've dyed it before - It depends on how you do it, frankly i've had worse chemicals in my hair than bleach .___.

I had lice for like three months straight - DERBAC will strip your hair of COLOR that has been in there for 6+ months (like shelf color from l'oreal) and on top of that, strip of nutrients. I had hair down past my chest and shoulderblades at one point, and had to cut over three inches off JUST to get the dead hair off.

If anything the reason i get people are saying "DONT DYE AND BLEACH" etc after having pink on bleach, is because if you constantly dye and bleach or put too much bleach in - it can indeed totally make the hair brittle. .___. i reallllly do appreciate EVERYTHING everyone is saying, i dont mean to sound like i'm discounting everyone...

But i've already ordered the dye, and swaying me to get a wig after every wig at the price of the dye looks like it came out of a trash bin, isn't relaly a help. I wasn't able to order a wig from Lost in Shangrila, because of the up front cost and no costume to go with it.

I'm doing a "CLOSET" cosplay that isn't something i'd like risking a wig for. The style of hair would not be well styled inside a normal wig -

Spoiler:

That's the sort of hair look i'm trying to go for >< but am trying to decide how to do it since i will HAVE to bleach to get pink.

I think your hair looks light enough to get away without bleaching it if you really want to avoid it. However, stripping it of colour first will give you a better end result.

mmm... again i'm really pleased everyone's given WONDERFUL opinions .___. even if i dont agree with some of them - i'm really yes VERY THANKFUL people have opinions here, cause i've only used normal shelf like loreal etc on my hair, and only ONCE i did red ... >.> i can't find the photos of it either lol.

i'm debating the bleach because then i'll have bright pink hair for a bit >.> <.< but bleach doesn't last forever and nor does dye, so when the pink fades i can always quickly (no less than two-three weeks from what i've seen) get some shelf-dye and get my hair back to a semi normal color

I'm very experienced with joys of bright pink hair.

For your hair to be pink you will need to bleach it, it won't matter if your hair turns out yellow because you are dying over it anyway. You can get ammonia free bleach which is less harmful and is supposed to be much nicer on sensitive heads. My head is bleach sensitive so I know how much it sucks, I haven't yet tried the ammonia free bleach yet but will be buying some in the next month.

Now for the dye itself, I have tried and dyed with fudge, manic panic and special effects. Fudge is pretty much the bottom of the line, washes out really fast and the colour doesn't remain very awesome when it is fading it gets weird. Manic Panic, the colour is better but it the dye bleeds like crazy when you wash your hair. Lastly, Special Effects is by far the best and I highly recommend. The colour can be as intense as you want it and if you take care of it, it doesn't wash out quickly and not as much of the dye bleeds during washing.

When dying it is best to apply to wet hair even if the instructions say other wise, the dye spreads better thefore giving you better coverage. For tidier application use a hair dying brush they are available at most chemists.

For optimum colour apply the dye in the evening, wrap your hair up in glad wrap and put on a shower cap and go to bed with the dye still in your hair. It gives the dye more time to sink into your hair. When you wash it out you there will be less dye to wash it. Thats how I apply Special Effects, I know Manic Panic is safe to leave in overnight I just don't remember the toxicity of Fudge.

If you or anyone else has further questions on dying hair crayola like feel free to ask me anything and I'll do my best to answer.

OKAY.
First off, dejaLudwig's advice seems to be the best so far. Fudge, ManicPanic and Special Effects are all more stains than actual hair colours. deja's list in order of quality is the same as I've found too.

If you want your hair bright pink you'll have to bleach it. These colours basically just add to what you have. If you have dark hair, you'll get a reddish tone or reflect, if you have blonde hair it will turn pink.

So far as the application goes, ALWAYS follow the manufacturer's instructions. And PLEASE get someone else to apply it for you, make sure they're wearing gloves (Decent ones) and use a colour brush.... this will help get an even application and stop people from having pink hands for a week.

So far as leaving it in all night.... I wouldn't recommend it. Again, follow the instructions. although if you are going to leave anything in for an extended period of time make sure it's a product that comes in a single package. anything you need to mix first involves a chemical reaction and leaving it on too long can allow nasty things to happen to your hair.

So far as people's comments go with bleach, Yes it will damage your hair. NO it won't make you hair fall out unless you overuse it, overprocess it, or use it in the wrong way. Off the shelf bleach is horrible and will damage your hair. Seriously you're better off seeing a qualified hairdresser and make sure you ask about aftercare.

Aftercare / rescue for damaged hair.... My favourite products are the Redken Extreme range. They can actually rebuild you hair if it isn't too far gone.

Pink is not an 'easy' colour.

OR get spray on colour... If you use enough of it it can actually work well.

And if this reads weird it's because i wrote it mainly while working off dejaLudvig's post because I'm tired and it's on my screen. And she seems to have a pretty good idea of what she's talking about Razz

EDIT:
Oops WALL OF TEXT.
Also, I didn't realise I said SO FAR so many times. lol.
