INDY 4!
Post By Guest. 11/06/08, 02:06 am

And no, I don't mean the car race!! *whip crack* A sound affect which was actually moderately absent :-(

So I went to see Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Crystal Skull and I will spoiler-out any plot spoilers (can't guaruntee anyone else will though so read the rest of the thread at your own peril!)

So ignore anyone who told you that childhoods have been ruined. They havn't. Ohh, there were little bits. The opening credits were notable for being entirely... well, normal. No huge red and yellow lettering. I expected the red and yellow lettering, but no. The issue of
Spoiler:
I personally, thought they would be, based on my interpretation of what the Knight said, but eh.

The issue of old, dead or unavailable actors was dealt with marvelously. They talked about them! Indy's getting on now (he's 60 odd, but bloody hell is Harrison Ford still looking good!) so of course all the people in his life who were older then him are dead. There's a statue to one of them in the university grounds!

Speaking of old, the made good use of the fact that Indy is now, well, old. I KNOW Mr Ford isn't looking that bad in real life - but the make up job they gave him has serious bags under the eyes and all OLD looking. Curiously, I thought he started to look better as the action continued. Maybe a shot of adrenaline was just what he needed.

The movie was perfectly dated. It's set in the 50's and for those who havn't done 5th form History yet, that was the age of McCarthyism and "Reds Under the Beds". If you were seen with a communists, that meant you were a communist and all your friends probably were too, and being a communist then means about the same thing as being a terrorist does now. The 50's was also the age of nuclear weapons testing, and the Roswell sightings.
Spoiler:

Acting? Superb! All the little things going on in the background. The kid (Shia LaBeouf, aka the kid from Transformers) had this fantastic nervous tick and was, as they said in the old days "Bold as Brass". He obviously got bloody ticked off when Indy got all caught up in the thrill of the chase and started helping the Bad Guys find the X that marks the spot. And then threw Indy a Snake to help him out a patch of trouble. "I HATE snakes!" Hehehe.

Plot? Well, it's an Indiana Jones film!! The objects in question in Indy films are rarely more than muguffins anyway, and you never even notice!

Continuity? This is one of my big nit-picks and I couldn't nit-pick it on continuity. They even got out some of the old sets by the look of it!

Characters? Say what you like about George Lucas, when he gets on a roll, he is one of the best at what he does, and characters is something he DOES!
Spoiler:

Cheese Factor? Not as cheesy as Crusade, much more cheesy than Temple. Probably about the same level as Raiders. Except at the end. Wow. But it would have ruined his hair :-D

Whaddya think?

Honestly, I really wasn't looking forward to this film. I had planning on missing it on principle (I haven't seen any of the others; that's about as far as my "principle" went..) but I was very pleasantly surprised! I'd heard some good things and some bad things - but overall, as a snarky film student and uninitiated Indy fan, I loved it :) Shia LaBoeuf was just great - the continual combing got a bit irritating, but was a very nice touch, and the political climate was set perfectly. I particularly enjoyed him busting into the test-site house - as soon as the mannequins popped up i started squirming and htinking, "ohhhhh, no.....BOMBBOMBBOMB!!!!"

Three thumbs up from moi Very Happy

See, I watched it again last month and *I* interpreted what the Knight said to mean that the GRAIL couldn't go beyond the seal but I didnt hear anything about the effect of the immortality, or where it could go. But eh, I maintain a policy that if the body wasn't burned in front of me with both the head and the heart removed you can't guaruntee that they're dead. A photo and a throw-away comment? Not proof. :-D

Maybe they had to continually drink from the grail to stay immortal?

Well a lot of people have been saying that and I'd just like to point out that a) in the 50's they were EXTREMELY topical.
Spoiler:
and
b) By 1968 the idea
Spoiler:
. As usual with an Indy film, all the artifacts are real - the ARE huge drawings in the dirt and those paintings of

are real. And they do, seriously, look like that.
Spoiler:
.

So that while I agree that the fellows we are talking about often get far too much screen time, the story in itself is actually very cohesive, true to the dates that they're setting it in and archaeologically accurate. And I can say things like that coz archaeology was my other major and we talked at lenth about above-mentioned-author. And Indy; we always wondered when the fedora's and bullwhips where going to be issued :-D
