Twilight Series
By Olli. 03/01/10, 01:52 pm |
| I'm half way through the first book and I must say it's badly written. I don't mind stories being in first person but it's badly done I must say though that the characters are more interesting and they seem to catch me more. Which is strange casue that didn't happen in the movies |

| I really like it / / understating / / haha ^ ^;
It's poorly written and I actually hate reading first-person-perspective unless it's a humorous genre but the characters have got to be the best of it. I think they had alot of potential too but Meyers tended to focus a much on the Edward and Bella thing more than the rest. |

| Said it numerous times before but...
Twilight is badly written. Twilight is not the next Harry Potter. SMeyer rapes her thesaurus (Oh God the Meadow Scene of infamy)
However, Twilight is brain candy. It's something I can read when I need a trip to la-la land, and it fulfills the same purpose that yaoi or other mushy romance novels do for me -- to make me feel gooey and warm and happy inside. And in that, it succeeds admirably. |

| Twilight is like a box of chocolates - when you start reading it, it is delicious and you can't help yourself. By the time you reach the end, you feel slightly sick and you really wish you didn't eat that much, and when you go back later you think about how the whole thing wasn't that bad - but you wouldn't really want to go back and do it again any time soon. ...or ever. |

| I've only read the first one, but I don't really think it's that badly written, TBH... Sure, it's not the best, but it is a nice read. One really rather bad thing about Twilight, I found, was that Stephanie Meyer completely ignored the Show Don't Tell rule. As to the first movie... it was badly acted.
Verdict: Twilight isn't a great book, by no means, but it isn't as bad as most people make it out to be. |

Re: Twilight Series
By Cactiberry. 12/01/10, 03:50 am |
| I don't find the plot believable, and the fact that they pretty much fell 'totally' in love within the span of thirty or so pages and then the rest of the books are spent banging on about how much they love each other and saving Bella from some sort of live-threating danger were, well, tedious. The characters aren't particularly well-developed, and even I can create characters that aren't so cliché and bland. The plot is also isn't particularly unique and interesting, and like it's been said before, giving vampires no weaknesses apart from the fact they 'sparkle' in the sun (Which can barely count as a weakness...) and pretty much raping vampires in general was a real book-killer. But it was the fangirls that really put it off for me. It was really annoying hearing people squeal "Oh my Edward!" every five minutes. :/ Yeah, I don't like Twilight, but I tried to not be offensive? Failed, probably.
EDIT: Oh, and the people constantly asking what 'Team' you are. For those curious - Team Tyler's truck. |

| @Aikome: I know, but I really dislike Twilight. And yes, there will never be a team Bella, because all the girls care about is the 'hot hot' guys. I'm pretty sure most of the twilight fandom imagines themselves as Bella whilst reading the book lol.
oh how much I want to say hate And my parents are very determined that I read 'good' books (Eg, those that will challenge my brain.) After reading authors like Terry Pratchett, then Twilight, the stark difference between the two of them (And I'm not referring to genre, but writing skill, use of adjectives, nouns and verbs, development of characters, plot flow and so forth) really made me dislike Twilight, because so many girls are obsessed with it and aren't opening up to other, better works of literature. /end bratty, snob rant thing |

| My stance on Twilight is similar to my stance on God-my issue is with the fans more than anything else. And because I went to a girls high school, i was subjected to the full force of Twi-hardiness. They still applauded when I called them "demonic hellspawn novels" during one memorable notice.
(When compared to other works of first person prose, Twilight is childlike and plodding. Perhaps being raised my a family of literati has given me high expectations for my prose?) |

| Oh, Twilight... XD;;; Personally: Not my thing. REALLY. BADLY. WRITTEN. Bella is completely blank. Her personality is non-existant. She's shallow - Practically only ever talks about Edward's looks. Edward, is a moron. One minute: I LOVE YOU! 8D Next: I LOVE YOU BUT I'M DANGEROUS STAY AWAY OH GOD. Also, sparkles. ...DAZZLEGASM. Not sexy, yes, original, but overwhelmingly LULZWORTHY. I mean seriously... THIS IS THE SKIN OF A KILLER. *rips open shirt and sparkles* ...Can anyone take that seriously? |D Good points: If you don't make it YOUR LIFE, it's fine. I have friends who love Twilight, fine for them. They don't shove the fact that they like it in my face, and I don't shove the fact that I hate it in theirs. Perfect balance. <3 Also, minor characters are really good in this series. Oh... And a major complaint: WTF HOW IS EDWARD CULLEN A GOOD ROLE MODEL? >w>;; And also that baby thing. That was just... really gross. XD;; ...I'm gonna shut up now, I could go on about this for hours... XD;; (Sorry for offending any Twilight lovers. o3o) |

| Think dislike the book because of the way fangirls and some fanguys [ have to admit some guys like it ] scream about how romantic and how sexy and attractive and how wonderful Edward is, and he just goes around stalking Bella most of the time and he has the personality of .. nothing...
It's just frustrating...
Srsly. Would rather date Ron Weasley instead of Edward Cullen. .____. |

TWILIGHT. HMM. It...took me bloody ages to read the first actually, because I got a little creeped out in a scene, and thus decided to politely ignore the book for six months. But then I came back to it and finished it, and yeah- it wasn't the best book of all time, but I keep reminding myself that I read romance novels xD so I like it, in general.
Movie doesn't do it justice, though DDB
What scares me the most with Twilight is the fandom .____. or rather, er, the fangirls and boys. PLEASE STOP ASKING ME IF I'M TEAM EDWARD OR JACOB. TEAM ALUCARD PLZKTHX

Re: Twilight Series
By Lowkey. 18/01/10, 06:16 am |
| I read Twilight when it was just starting to get big but before it was everywhere, at high recommendation - I finished it one afternoon and my biggest arguments with it were A) vampires don't sparkle and B) that for a book that devotes half of its plot to Bella finding out that Edward is a vampire, it had a fairly obvious clue to its central mystery in the blurb. Where by obvious clue I mean "I was absolutely sure he was a vampire" was splashed across the front page twice or might as well have been. As a primary genre-fiction reader, the lack of actual plot or character build was what I expected of general fiction (I know, I know, shush.)
Really it's the fan club and the way it's simultaneously blown open modern / urban fantasy and vampires as a genre, and managed to make the word "fangs" nearly taboo in conjunction with vampires, that has ruined Twilight. Meyer is at best a mediocre writer; people who have read about two other books in their life adamantly insisting that Twilight is "good" writing and going gaga over watered-down, pulled-tooth, vegetarian vampires and assuming all vampires must be the same that is the great tragedy.
An interesting anecdote: Pat Robertson, the idiot who says Haiti is cursed, was recently a trending topic on Twitter; every page or so of tweets with him as a search term, there would be one or two idiots thinking it was Rob Pattinson that was being discussed. "Omg I love twilight" would ensue. Twilight has idiots for fans, more than any other fandom. |

| I go to an all girls school too. OH MY THE MEMORIES. I remember there was a period of about two terms where you couldn't walk through a hallway without seeing someone carrying one of the books.
The plot of the 4th book was hilaaaaaarious. I couldn't stop laughing while I was reading it. |
