| Mmm, well, I think that in general westerners suit a certain type of cosplay - in much the way different people are better suited to certain characters. Same goes for Asians. Lets face it, I aint ever gonna fit just about any serious character (barring the every anime has one stereotypical slightly unshaved "lecherous photographer" character )
All said... Damn... Those Neko girls... |

| The Ivy cosplayer shown in the comments was hot. xDDD
Anyway. That article brought up some good points, yeah. Really, all it comes down to is cosplay to suit your body type and don't try to wear skimpy outfits if you're huge, or you're adding more fuel to the 'western cosplayers suck' fire. 8D
(wait a second, why am I cosplaying Motochika again...? lol, I'm a hypocriiite. xD) |

| Hurr. It's kind of like, anyone can cosplay whoever they like - but they not necessarily should I've seen a lot of fights about whether or not "Westies" can cosplay, and a lot of racist videos viciously tearing down western cosplayers merely because they aren't asian and thus are being 'disrespectful' by cosplaying. I enjoyed reading the article, and agree with many of the things in it. Mkay, that's my four cents, bahahaha... |

Re: Can The West Cosplay With The Best Of Them? By Kitten Slave. 29/12/09, 05:26 am |
| That is the subtle hint I am making. Irrespective of how "good" or "bad" the costume or costumer is, if you put something like those two catgirls in something that barely qualifies as a costume (barely, because there isnt very much of it ), then it is inevitably going to end up being an "awesome" costume to everything with a penor (and a good number without it would seem).
*shrug*
Hey, I am still a male after all.
That said, I think that a lot of the folk on here make better/really good costumes because lets face it, while wearing a one piece swimsuit/bikini to a con will get you attention, it does not exactly constitute the worlds most intricate costume.

| I agree with that article about the photos. You don't see many bad Asian cosplays because they don't get photographed.
I read an article a few months back about the negative purpose of cosplay in Korea. Basically, people don't make costumes because they don't have time so they get them shipped in from Japan and China or get them commissioned really cheaply and made quite well. They don't cosplay for the same purposes as Westerners do. Rather, they try to be as elaborate as possible to get the attention of photographers in hopes making something out of it. Since there are a limited number of photographers compared to the amount of cosplayers, the cosplayers basically compete to be better than other cosplayers at the convention. It's not uncommon to see cosplayers bringing a fully decorated table along with matching Victorian tea sets if they're cosplaying from Kuroshitsuji : / |

| I think its really a thing of skill which also applies to the ability to pick suitable cosplays which the asian sides seem to do better
since you can have the most amazing costume but if your 200 pounds and and your character is 30 pounds it wont matter how good the costume is people will only see the difference in weight |

A good portion or their good ones get photo shopped as well, that sometimes can make quite the impact on a cosplay photo. |

| The article was excellent. The comments ignorant for the most part. For one thing most 501st armour is made as kits by a small number of people... this is why there is such a cohesive look- and you can start to tell who made what over time.
Anyway, all costuming should be treated the same as the base skills are the same- an eye for fit and shape and to understand how it works on the human body. And I see a lot of poorly fitted and made items all over the world. |

Yeah, you get that on sites sometimes, but not all the people there are that bad ^^ (For example me XD)
But I just thought it was a good read and has some interesting examples of perspective from all sides. |

Re: Can The West Cosplay With The Best Of Them? By H-idenshi. 30/12/09, 10:00 am |
| Isn't the entire basis of the article missing the mark entirely? They are almost speaking like cosplay is fundamentally something with the purpose of pleasing others...
It's my personal opinion but, who cares what the perspective of others is... are you not merely materializing your 2D desires / creating an embodiment of how you perceived said character / becoming ONE with said character lol (;゚∀゚)=3ハァハァ Isn't it what the action of cosplay in itself means to you personally that is important? Isn't it the otaku way in striving to forge your own path? (Isn't the act of denying my opinion the very representation of this idea... wait that'd mean agreeing causes argument failure... nuuuu logic collapse ≧∇≦;;;)
My 1 cent (yes because my opinion is cheap ヽ(´―`)ノ☆)
(As a side note: I've never personally considered those so called cosplay professionals in Japan anything other than models seeking the limelight. Not saying that is a bad thing, but to an extent it causes ideological incompatibility. Of course it's understandable that cosplay be used in such a way to form ones identity and build communities etc -> which gives rise to a natural process of cosplay = for showing... but nonetheless ┐(´∀`)┌*shrug*) |

| Maybe it's because it's 3am and I just got home from work, and that you use weird symbols and such but I think you may have missed the point of the article.
And what's that about being an otaku and forging your own path? You may have to shed some light on that one. |

Re: Can The West Cosplay With The Best Of Them? By H-idenshi. 31/12/09, 10:59 am |
| [serious reply]- Spoiler:
The point of the article is all well and good. It throws in some history and background info, makes reference to various excerpts from 'renowned sources' and concludes with the usual 'we are all equal'-ish kind of rhetoric. That's perfectly fine (while I am not particularly a fan of kotaku / dannychoo / sankaku etc style articles, I can understand/appreciate the motive of the article)
However, I was merely insinuating that the basis of the article (countering 'an unfair stereotype — that Westerners cannot cosplay') was missing the mark. I made this remark because I personally believe that if you love something then why should it matter whether you can or cannot do it well, let alone be overly conscious to the perception of others.
(To go into more detail, then... The articles concludes with a 'no group is stereotypically better' phrase but this statement itself totally ignores the cultural dynamics in the surrounding fandom that it briefly touched upon and instead ends implying a 'it all comes down to looks/features, so we all have characters we can and cannot pull off well' type plead. While this is physically obvious, in reality not everyone is equal and the fact of the matter is Japanese cosplayers will be worshiped over their foreign counterparts by alot of foreign fans simply because japan has become a quasi-'holy land' to marginalized societies worldwide. Add to this the fact that Japan still has a strong undercurrent of xenophobia woven into it and that otaku culture/media is by nature quite right-winged and nationalistic, it is easily understood why critique towards foreign layers is relatively somewhat harsh. Unfair stereotype or not, this is the result of elitism/chosen people psychology and Japanese centric-culture patriotism. Since these dynamics really have little to do with cosplay and the root of the 'problem?' even less so, it is merely another reason why in my opinion one should just shrug it off.)
As to the 'otaku' comment. Simply put, obsession towards to the extent that one will continue regardless of external pressures from the surrounding environment (whatever they may be...) or their own well being etc. (hence forging ones own path).
[/serious reply]
