Patterns~ || By Duckeh. 19/03/09, 06:33 am |
| Cutting patterns is thee part I hate most. T.T
But I find using patterns helps me out alot, even though I generally modify the hell out of them, the basic shape is there, and that's love. <3
//Has died a little on the inside in the past half an hour...... CUTTING, SO MUCH BORING.//
So, who here uses patterns??
I really want to get a dressmakers dummy, so that I can kind of pin and cut... Seriously... I would die of happiness.
Another pointless topic brought to you by Duckeh. 8DD

| lol
I use patterns (sometimes make my own)...I have no no patterns that fit me...apart from my Laughing Moon Corset pattern, but that doesn't count...
I have to alter my patterns all the time...and it is very annoying...lol
I also would kill for a Dress maker's Dummy....or someone to help me make myself a Duct-tape one...lol

| i always use patterns
just coz other wise my outfits would totally suck
for my org 13 pattern i used 4 different patterns, combined them together, edited it slightly and then made 4 mock ups until i got it right!
^_^; yes patterns are a great thing to have

| OHO~ I was thinking about making a duct tape dummy, though I keep forgetting to get duct tape and well... Forgetting all about it in general.
MOCKUPS ARE ALSO GHEY. T.T
//Is currently making one for a commission//
Rarararara. <3 Yes, I want to go more into making my own patterns from scratch... Though I keep thinking it means a whole lot of work when I have a whole filing cabinet full of them... I bee lazy. I FILED MY PATTERNS! It's pretty lulzy... On the tabs there's the pattern number so if I find random pieces lying round I can put them in and a quick description of what it is. I am sooo lame. 8D' |

| I can't be bothered with buying patterns (unless its something like a corset) so I either make my own pattern or I go along with whatever pattern layout is in my head The latter tends to waste more fabric though..
Ooo mannequins... I'm gonna try to get a mannequin for my birthday.. they seem like such helpful things |

| I use patterns! Though, I think every one has been modded in some way since I've rarely come across one that's 100% like the one I need for my costume.
Hehe, I just made shorts today for my cosplay! Actually, it wasn't as bad as I first thought that pattern would be...even though I guess it was easier since I didn't need pockets or a zip-crotch. Yay for basic shorts! |

Re: Patterns~ || By Leeni. 19/03/09, 09:15 am |
| I've only ever used a pattern that I had to make from myself with a tutorial >3<
OH on the duct tape dummies; if you do one, you have to be prepared to spend LOTS of money on duct tape. It's so expensive. I just got my mom to help me make a brown packing tape one (that I called Madonna.. xD;) it was pretty easy. Just beware if you're using something with heavy elastic (like my Christmas!loli attempt) because it will warp it. But it's good if you're poor and/or cheap, and just need something easy |

Re: Patterns~ || By Static. 19/03/09, 10:01 am |
| I had a dressform. Then I sold it to my mum. Honestly, I didn't find it all that useful...it was a retarded one that didn't actually go down to my shape, but the smaller one didn't go up far enough. I much prefer fitting stuff on the person who' actually going to be wearing it, it just makes for a way better fit. Of course people complain more if you stab them with pins, but hey. On the pattern thing - physics I HATE CUTTING. I have done all the cutting in the world ever in the last couple of weeks, and I am way too impatient to appreciate it. I like seeing stuff take shape, not the random abstract shapes they make when you cut the bastards out. Also I modify everything, which just makes the whole process take that much longer. Blargh! |

| Hmmm.. ideas for my presentation is forming.. I can't bring my lovely dress form down with me to ChCh but I think a half form will be fine. May just paint her to not be so obviously nekkid.....
I do not use patterns. If I'm feeling lazy I'll use a garment I have already made as a base to take a rough guide from but otherwise pin and cut on a dress form is what I do :)
And more ideas for my site when I change hosts to have more datastorage.... |

| I buy patterns and then modify them. I spent last night modifying one, and now I'm annoyed my iron broke.
What I hate about patterns is that the instructions are impossible to understand. It made no sence to me, and the drawing made it look like three peices of material instead of two =___= |

I asked my mum what to do, and she only just managed to get what it was going on about. And it looked like half the intructions were missing too (but I was skim reading - Took a long while to find the interfacing instructions still). |

The pattern instruction booklets are embedded with micro-cameras to watch us squirm and fall into a mess of tears and frustration trying to figure things out. They sit down with popcorn and watch us in pain from their monitors.
Since, you know, there's nothing good on TV these days >_>
Seriously, though, I think some of us COULD easily re-write those things to make more sense! |

I just watched Criminal Minds. Good show. It's on TV 8D. But yeah, everything on TV is bad, and the small amount of stuff that isn't I've already seen because friends download it xDD. |

| I have had arguments with people which go along the lines of, Me:'This is what the pattern says,' Friend 'But it won't work that way.' Me; 'Why would the pattern lie to us.' Friend 'Just look if you do that it will be inside out when you finish.' Me:'Why did the pattern lie?' |

Re: Patterns~ || By Static. 09/11/09, 01:33 pm |
| I use patterns, and also a dummy. I find that patterns are fantastic for getting things SYMMETRICAL ORZ...and then fitting it to dummy/me. My dummy doesn't fit me, it's a pain. -____-;;
I have a deep envy (and lots of awe) at people who can direct drape - I find it takes just as long, if not longer, particularly when the bit of fabric you're pinning is so freakin' massive. Although I suck, so yeah. It might not take as long if you don't suck. Just a theory. |

| I fail hard at using patterns therefore, I don't use them, no successful costume of mine has been made using one. I envy those of you who can use patterns, sometimes figuring out how to do things and what shape/size what should be makes my head want to explode |

As in, extending/shortening. & I shaped one top so it didn't hang like a rubbish bag xD Luckily I manage to find patterns that are extremely close to the cosplays I want to make 8D |
