Ringlets? D8? By Pyro. 09/12/09, 07:26 am |
| How the hell do I put a wig into huge ringlets?
And by 'huge' I mean like...
I was thinking, maybe I could get like, a big metal pipe, wind some wig hair around it, use a hair dryer to heat up the fibres and then pull the pipe out once the ringlet is in place-- rinse and repeat. Does that sound like it'd work at all?
Uwaaa, Caterina, you are beautiful, but your hair makes me want to punch babies... ;_; |

| First thing -- Beautiful costume~ You have good taste.
Well, I think it sounds like a plausible idea. Be aware that a metal ring would heat up very quickly, so maybe try some sort of synthetic material that won't melt? I'd also add an assload of cheap hairspray as well just to make -sure- that it stays in place. Oh, and make sure to practice on a cheap wig before you try it. |

| The idea of using a metal pipe is that a plastic pipe might melt. xDDD
But I dunno, I'll experiment with all the kinds of pipe I've got lying around. Sometime this week, I shall go and buy a cheapish wig to fiddle with. ohohohoho~ |

| OMG Lady Caterina! Love you. And yeah... a stupid amount of hairspray will be needed just to fix it in place... I HAVE to see this costume completed |

| If you get a wig with heat resistant fibres using a metal pipe and a hair dryer would work and not destroy it, normal kanekalon fibre though you'd need to be alot more careful and use a lot more hairspray |

| @Campy- Yay, someone else who likes Caterina~~~ <3 She's one of my favorite TB characters, alongside Noelle, Isaac, Leon and Cain. x3
But ja, five bucks says this takes more than a whole can to keep fixed. @_@
@PI- Do wigs with more heat-resistant fibre exist? I'm going to do this with a kanekalon wig, as far as I know. |

| @Kagerouhi- Those sound interesting. =O
I was reading a wig-styling tutorial before, and apparently curlers + low-setting hair dryer does work to create ringlets in kanekalon wigs... The only question is, would a pipe be an adequate replacement for curlers in that case? I could use hairspray to sort of stick the hair to it... hm. |

| Make sure the wig you get will actually style. I tried doing something similar for a customer forwellygeddon this year, and NOTHING would curl that bloody wig! I've curled them before, so I *know* it weren't my technique...
It is very doable without buying a heat resistant wig - katir bair's forums have some good tips, including using foam inside each curl to make it keep its shape. |

| OH WOW YOU'RE DOING THAT COSTUME YOU ARE COOL I just started watching Trinity Blood and it's gooood. And not just because of the ridiculous-awesome outfits.
I recently curled a wig by using ordinary plastic curlers and pouring a lot of almost-boiling water over it; it worked really well.
But the wig was fairly short and the curls were smaller (about 3cm in diameter) so it might be a bit different with a longer wig. I didn't need to use any hairspray, but with heavier ringlets it might help quite a lot.
Also, the wig I used was of the craptacular $8 variety; I'm not sure how easy it is to curl higher-quality wigs but I'm pretty sure I've heard others say that hot water works well with kanekalon too.
If you're using hot water you can probably just use ordinary curlers rather than a pipe; the water will still heat the hair in the centre of the curler; but if you use a hairdryer I imagine the hair would need to be more spread-out for it all to get heated evenly (so a pipe might work better.)
It might be a good idea to start collecting cardboard toilet roll tubes - when you're storing/transporting the wig you could wrap the hair around the tubes to help them keep their springiness/stop them from getting tangled. |

| I saw one tutorial where the person just sprayed a heck lot of hairspray onto sections of the wig then put them in hair curlers for the... night or some extended period of time. But yea, not sure on how well that would work with the giant ringlets of doom. |

I don't think regular curlers would work for this, is the only thing-- the ringlets I need to make are absurdly large, as you can seeeee~ <3
Thanks for the hot water idea, though. -plots- |
