Hair curlers By Static. 24/09/09, 07:54 am |
| So I have a little problem - I am going to need to curl my hair for a couple of costumes for Geddon this year, and have run into a few (hur) snags. I have naturally wavy hair, that forms ringlets at the ends - it's quite long, and the weight straightens it from my scalp to about my ears. I need UBER CURLS. I have experimented with curlers before, with disastrous results - my hair is very, very fine, and it tried to eat the last curlers that went through it. It did poof up how I wanted it, but was painful enough I am definitely going to think twice before I try that again! So yes - any recommendations for curlers that DON'T get stuck in fine hair? The ones I used were a combination of velcro and the realy old school metal-and-bristle ones. And the velco weren't too bad for the hair in the middle of the roller, but the ends made up for it...and curling irons do very little on my hair, which is strange... SO YEAH. Help? |

| I don't know about hair curlers but I know you can get pretty good curls using a hair straighter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpl9KYzmJ6s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iB4Sp3zdqE |

| Hmmmm. I'm sorta looking for something to use in wet hair that will dry in shape - paper curls maybe, but I'd like to get something I can use again if possible. Thank you though |

| I have the same problem- I can only only get wet-sets work on my hair. I use sponge rollers or those bendy stick rollers work well too. I use toilet paper as curl-papers so the ends are all tidy.
The retrohair community on livejournal had some great tutorials: http://community.livejournal.com/vintagehair/tag/tutorial
(I LOVE IT SO MUCH! SO USEFUL)

| I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO LOOK LIKE DITA. Actually this is for Wonderwoman and maybe also my comp dress, so I might actually bear a passing resemblance...that's a spooky thought. And weight loss incentive! |

| I have the same problem, having fine hair that is, I hate it! Even hair ties tangle in my hair! I hate my hair.
Anyway, why not use a wig? |

| I can't really afford one and I like the look of natural hair in updos over synthetic - at least the synthetic I have the skills to style! It's also gonna be really, really warm under a big curly wig...e___e |

| VELCRO ROLLER SUCK. Don't use them, especially on fine hair! Heated rollers are SO MUCH better, and shouldn't give you any bad frizziness. It's best to use them on slightly dirty hair and it's important to use a good setting product, which will help with the fineness and the hair slipping out of the rollers.
No matter how tempted you get, try not to hair spray it while it's in the rollers, that will make it crusty and you won't get a nice smooth result. Just use heaps of setting product. Then when it comes out you can tease the roots to get Wonder Woman-esque volume and hair spray the bejeezus out of it.
I can't overstate how awesome heated rollers are, I've used all kinds on myself and others numerous times and they're the best thing to use if you want nice curls. You can get some really great sets from Briscoes for under $40 usually, too.
I should add that a good fine tooth tail comb is really handy while trying to use any kind of rollers as well... Makes sectioning the hair really easy, and it also helps to tuck the ends of the hair into the rollers to make sure you don't get 'fish hook' ends. |

| How long should you leave heated rollers in? I've never got them work very well (I know it's something I'm doing wrong)
The only way I can get my hair to curl nicely (myself- hairdressers have no problem!) is by washing it, letting it nearly dry then misting it with setting lotion. Pincurling or rolling it up and sleeping on it.

| Hmmm. When I was doing 48 hours last year, we used heated rollers on one of our actresses and it really didn't last that long - we had tore-do her twice. Since my hair is notoriously hard to make hold a style, I'd probably lean towards a wet-to-dry method instead. Thank you for your input though! I might invest in a set of heated rollers for photoshoot at some point, they do look pretty amazing when they've just come out |

| Hehe! I actually have NO costume planned for sunday at this point, so pincurls/rags with a headscarf and a cute dress to match is a distinct possibility! Man, I'm so excited about this - I never do excitign hair stuff, so this will be great fun! |

| "Old lady" perm rods with wet hair and anti-snap over night gives me this: (dorky with rollers in photo: https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v609/glittersweet/costume/starwars/DSCN7362-1.jpg )
And yes, my hair was as long as it is now (hip length) and it did indeed wind up shoulder length ;) and was also used for my Satine costume:
- Spoiler:
They fall out eventually but with careful timing of taking the rollers out you can get a good result. The other option are foam curlers also overnight and I think that is what I shall be using for Geddon for a few hairstyles. They are uncomfortable (but more comfy than perm rods) but being able to let the hair stay in a curled position for more than 8 hours is really vital.
And my hair is super fine and a trouble maker too. |

Yeah, you need to use a good setting spray or lotion with heated rollers (or any heat styling), it makes so much difference. You can get some great stuff by L'Oreal which works wonders... But it's $33 a bottle. It's one of the better sprays I've used so far (and I've tried a lottt). They have to be really hot to work well as well, and unfortunately they can age quite quickly. It's an expensive way to go, but worth it if you want a certain look (imo, but you as you can tell I swear by the things, haha) Good luck with the hair anyway! I hope you find a solution that works for you.
Mischa, it depends on the rollers. The kinds I've used (I think about four different kinds?) were completely cool to the touch at about 30-40 minutes in. If you can leave it in longer of course, that helps too! Like pin curls and any other rollers
neimhalle, that's some badass hair you've got going on. Off topic, but your eyebrows in the bottom pic are faantastic too. |
