Fix or start over? By RainbowMoonDust. 11/09/09, 12:26 pm |
| I have just finished making a top for my Nelliel Tu cosplay only to discover that it is too loose. It rides up, exposing my bra if I lift my arms, do not want! I realize that the top needs to be much tighter as in skintight. Trouble is I don't know if taking it in would make it any shorter or not and I really do not want it any shorter than it already is.
So here is my dilemma, take it in? Or start from scratch with either a tighter fitting T-shirt pattern or altering the one I already have?
For the record, I am a complete beginner at sewing and am learning through the help of a tutor and I don't really have enough experience to make a judgement call on this, so any advice would be appreciated, thanks. I will see if I can talk to my tutor on monday but seeing as I'm going materials shopping then, it would be nice to know before then if I need to buy a new pattern or unpick my top to take it in. |

| Always try fixing first :) That way if it doesn't work you have a better pattern to work from when you start over :) |

| i assume this is her hueco mundo outfit? those sorts of costumes can always be saved by hollywood tape (for the lazy), but i'm agreeing with neimhaille here. C: always better to try have a go fixing it first, mayaswell try if you're thinking of making another anywho.
it can't hurt~ (btw i am very looking forward to seeing your nel! 8DDD you have to join our arrancar group at the nz anime event next year~) |

| I agree - take it in! But when you do - don't just approximate, put it on inside out and pin with the pins parallel to your body while it's on you (if you can) to the right size. When you take it off, trace along that line with a fabric pencil along that line so you don't lose it, then turn your pins 90 degrees so they're perpendicular to the line you're sewing, and sew along the line you just made. (I say don't approximate because we just spent a good few hours sewing the fabric we just cut off BACK into the side seams of Alex's Ioryogi costume because I thought "Yeah, three inches should be good" *dies*) |

| Follow Jess's advice - it's always better to have ago at fixing it before you start again (unless you've taken too much fabric out and can't simply return it - that doesn't sound like it was too much fun Jess ) Even if you royally mess it up, you would have learnt more by trying to fix it that just starting again - you might even come across an issue that you wouldn't have known how to deal with had you just started again! Nothing more frustrating than two unsalvagable items Anyway, I'm sure it'll turn out great, I have no idea who that is but I Can't wait to see you! :)) |

| Take it in Emma (as has already been said) The fabric is stretch so you should be fine even if you take it in a bit to much.
as for keeping it down... I'm a bit stumped except for maybe using safety pins (not the greatest Idea I know sorry >_< ) |

| Hrmmm~ The rule I live by is you can always take something in, it's better bigger then smaller? I'm sure if you muck around with it long enough it'll come together and you'll have the experience even if it doesn't work~ Goood lucck~ <3 |

| Guess I should have posted pictures of the character I'll be cosplaying as and what outfit she wears and the one that I am making, so to give you all a better idea:
- Spoiler:
- Spoiler:
I have already completed the skirt, I am making a seperate top and skirt because I don't know how to get the skirt to stay up if it was a dress so it might not be entirely accurate but hopefully passable.
Mandie is right, if I take it in a little too much it won't matter with the fabric being very stretchy and all.
@Lucy: Hollywood tape?! Um, I'll talk to my tutor first tomorrow and see what she recommends and if I have to resort to starting over or Hollywood tape then so be it. I will try to take it in/alter it first as everyone has said.

Arrancar group?! I wanted to do one of these so count me in! But I'll have to decide between Arrancar Nel, Rag Nel or Arrancar Gin. This will make it very hard to decide as I want to do both Nelliel's and Gin's Arrancar versions at some point, so hard to choose!
Thank you everyone for your advice, I will try it and hopefully salvage this top. |
