The company has made an offer to the union which is apparently worth
considering and voting on, so the lockout and industrial action has
been temporarily called off, and buses will run as usual. I will keep
you updated on any further developments.

UPDATE (6 October): The Auckland Combined Unions have once
again issued notice of Work-to-rule effective as of October 8th, while
nothing has been confirmed as of the present point in time, we are
preparing for the possibility of the company retaliating with a notice
of lockout like they did last time we issued a work-to-rule notice.

The key reasons behind this are 1. Despite several negotiation
meetings, the company are unwilling to give the drivers a wage rate
suited to the work that they do and what they put up with on a daily
basis, and most importantly, 2. The fact that they have revoked any
back-pay that the drivers are entitled to, our current contract having
expired as of early july, thus denying union workers up to HUNDREDS of
dollars in back pay.

I'll post again tomorrow with further notice of what happens.

At present, the only way that SIGNIFICANT disruptions will occur is if the company decides to issue us with a lockout notice, we have no intention of resorting to a full-out strike at this point in time as we want to cause as LITTLE inconvenience to the general public as possible.

If they do not lock us out and the work-to-rule goes ahead, all you will be looking at is probably some buses leaving up to 10-20 minutes late from their scheduled departure times.

We have been issued with a lockout notice effective as of 6.45pm this evening, bus services provided by NZ BUS affiliated services (Northstar, THE LINK, Metrolink, Waka Pacific, Go west, and City Circuit) will cease as of 4am Thursday october 8 until further notice.

The bus drivers of the Tramways, Akarana, NDU (National Distribution Union) and EPMU (Engineers, printers and manufacturers union) apologise to the general public for any continued inconvenience the general public may be experiencing during the lockout action being issued by the company. We, most of all, feel it is extremely unfair that the company is able to hold not just the drivers, but the ENTIRE CITY to ransom by withholding vital services to the ratepayers.

As of the current point in time, the Auckland Council has issued an ultimatum to Infratil (NZBUS), the article about which can be found here: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10602788 which basically states that if the bus company does not resolve this dispute and lift their lockout notice, they risk losing their contracts, which will then be given to other bus companies.

Amazingly, the company appears to have dismissed this as a scare tactic, when they SHOULD be taking this VERY seriously, as this is something that WILL drive the company under completely if they lose their contracts, as they will have no means of income to support their employees (no contracts = no subsidies), and the bus drivers and mechanics will simply leave the company in search of greener pastures, namely those of the other bus companies that will pick up NZBUS's contracts and be in need of more drivers.

We hope that the situation will be resolved some time this week.

tbh, I would be happy if other companies took over some of the routes. They have been amazing in taking over some of the routes affected in the lock-out so people can actually have a life/go to work/Uni. As long as the drivers of the affected routes are re-hired haha.

NZBus is acting like a spoilt child who doesn't get what they want imho. I understand striking, but this is absurd.

I understand perfectly what you are saying, NZBUS/Stagecoach has been in the "key position of power" when it comes to holding the majority of bus runs for too long, and needs a bit of a shake-up.

At the end of the day, if they don't get this sorted, it will send the entire company under since they will lose their contracts, their subsidies, and ultimately their employees, which as I said earlier, will happily desert them to head to the other companies that picked up the slack.

NZBus is being ridiculous about this - "NZ Bus general manager of operations Zane Fulljames said Mr Lee's comments were "not helpful"." - this quote just makes me incredulous - it's your lack of understanding and ability to compromise that's not helpful, NZBus! D< And denying the offer to drive the school buses for free?! WHY? Someone, explain to me how that's 'mischevious' and 'just a media stunt'? As someone who wants to work in brand identity/PR, I think NZBus is doing itself irreversible damage over this incident, and quite frankly it's both embarrassing and sickening to see.

The fact that earlier today ARTA told the company they had till 5pm today to lift their lockout and resume negotiations or they would start processing the paperwork for cancellation of their contracts.
