NOH8 - Gathering

-What?

A outing proving that we, as New Zealanders, care about a great cause. A gathering to enjoy each others company, and show people that teenagers know how to stick to our convictions. Basically a group of open-minded people willing to show their support for this.

-Why?

On November 4th, 2008 Proposition 8 passed, amending the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. Though this is in the state of California, it doesn’t mean that we should sit down and take it.

I'm still in the process of planning this, but I was wondering just how many people would be willing to show their support towards this cause. I was thinking we'd find a large area where we could take photos for them. The only thing required would be a plain white T-Shirt, and we'd have to find a plain wall, preferably white, for us to take photos against. I'd be willing to supply the camera, face paint and duct tape.

What happens is that we'd take photos in the shirts with 'NOH8' painted on our cheek, and a piece of duct tape over our mouths. For more information, check out the website, but the white is to symbolize no difference between us all, the paint is to show what we stand for, and the duct tape is to symbolize our voices not being heard.

After that we could plan some activities, hang out, go for lunch etc. I think it would be good if we kept our face paint on after that just to advertise our cause to alot of other people, maybe even get some of them involved.

What do you think? Those who cannot come out to the gathering (time and place still up for debate) can always send in pictures to a board we will set up after the gathering so we can get as many as possible for these people to help their cause ^_^

I'm thinking that we could do it at AuckGeddon, since there's people that come up from all over the country. It might be the best time to do it, and a lot of people will already be in one place... We could probably talk to the 'geddon organizers and get them to put an add on their website, so that people who aren't part of CNZ, but are people who go there, can join in also?

but then some of the cosplayers at geddon may not be able to do the t-shirt thing, depending on what their cosplay is like. and more likely than not, can't do the facepaint thing due to makeup and stuff D: i know i'll not enjoy changing out of one of my planned cosplays for geddon...

That's why I was thinking that we should have it /after/ the event, like, last thing on the monday or something, then people who are in cosplay can wear a white shirt. I can bring a few extra, so that people can borrow them if they didn't bring them themselves....

XD I've chatted with the organizers before, so I think they'd be okay with putting an add, making this maybe an official event...?

But I dunno what exactly to write in the email... Should I just link them here? I'm not good with formal writing x.x

And if that fails, we can get the cosplay announcers to say something after the cosplay competition? Maybe if we hold it afterwards...?

If people want places to change it should be ok to use our hotel?
And if it's possible you could just put the white tops on over your cosplay or something? (make the photos interesting ^^)

I personally don't care if a single state has outlawed it. Thats what moving is for.

I think I'll hold off the protesting until someone has the gall to try and enact such a bill on the federal level.

it really depends on the cosplay D: i'll be wearing a furisode-inspired wa-loli type cosplay for one of the days, and that will not be fun to pull anything of any description over... plus i don't think my long ears sewn into the wig will like it much...
... also, heavy delicate makeup for all three days, get 8D;;;;

That's what I was thinking, AuckGeddon is a bit hard to do it at, and I don't think I'd afford this while struggling to pay to get to AuckGeddon.

If we have to though, I'll write the letter, because I'm great at formal writing.

Scratch that, AuckGeddon not a good idea. We need people to be able to have painted cheeks, and we need an EMPTY area to take pictures. Cosplayers can't wear the paint as it will interfere with their cosplays.

Well, I've contacted the website and said I'd be sending them some files, so perhaps we could find a way to do this like Ollithia said, and eventually I'd gather all the files and send it in for us ^_^

I had further ideas, to make it easier to do with cosplay involved. The site has had many people doing slightly different things, and has accepted them, so I was thinking, instead of painting our cheeks, we paint it on the palms of our hands and face those to the camera, and as for the white shrit thing, I was thinking we should use a white sheet to be held behind us (or in front, whatever).

This would also be pretty good, as us being in cosplay would symbolise people of all races (as some would undoubtedly be shinigami or alien), genders and all walks of life would gather together in this protest.

-shrugs- But whatever time, so long as we can get people together, it should be fine. I was just thinking 'Geddon coz there's gonna be lots of people from all over the country joining (and we may even be able to get some of the stars involved).

But if it's just not going to work, then we'll have to figure out something else to do.

The issue is that if in cosplay you are pretending to be someone else. You want it to be obviously you, because if it isn't it isn't like you are showing your support.

Also, I believe we may have copyright issues as some artists will not want their character depicted as supporting that. This can cause trouble for us and for the company.

I don't think there would be any issues with the creators of series having issues, I mean at least not anything from an anime or manga, people create doujinshi's all the time and profit from them so there wouldn't be any issue with Japanese created characters, American created ones it's unlikely but could create issues. Plus isn't cosplay in a way, expressing yourself and not being afraid to be who you want to be which is more suited than conforming in white as straight marrige is like the conforming but by being colourful and all sorts of different things it's more accepting

I'd like to say I agree, only the issue being by standing out against that, we have to conform to the way they're taking their pictures. I had a look through, and the only one's that have been accepted onto the actual picture page were all wearing white shirts, some wore other stuff with the white shirt, and some had the paint elsewhere, but the instructions state how they want the picture -shrugs-

If we do it at the end of one of the days, people's cosplays won't be ruinded from the facepaint.

I'd like to say now that I'd prefer if it weren't during Geddon.
Geddon for me, is a break. And if this were happening during it, I know I, and whoever helps me, won't get the most out of the event.
As it is, I don't even think I can cosplay due to the costs of getting there and paying for my way in, so I'd rather know I could do that contently without having to sort this out, and pay for the extras involved in it.
Geddon is a suggestion, but one I would rather use as a desperate measure. I'd even prefer people sending in their pictures to a board on here, rather than Geddon.
