District 9 (my review spoiler free, can't promise about responses!) By Guest. 19/08/09, 08:52 am |
| Went out to see this last night.
It's a sci-fi action film set in Johannesburg, 20 years after an alien ship parked itself in our atmosphere. The aliens have been living in a Jo-burg slum, known as District 9. And then... Well all the sugar honey iced tea hits the fan
This movie has EVERYTHING.
It has spaceships. It has wiretaps. It has a MECHA SUIT. It has big scary aliens. It has cute little aliens. It has an awesome sounding alien language. It has awesome special effects - awesome creature effects, awesome blowup effects. It has Nigerian gangsters and inter-species prostitution (talked about but not seen!). It has witch-doctors. It has South African men running around shouting "FOCK" at the top of their lungs repeatedly. It has AWESOME action sequences. It has a brilliant plot. It has evil scientists. It has guns that blow the sugar honey iced tea out buildings. It has mercenaries and people wearing bio-hazard suits. It has the best and worst of human behaviour.
The ONLY bad thing I can think to say about it is that it sub-titled people for an American audience - NZ'ers didn't need subtitles on even the thick South African accents, but Americans do. And the shaky cam gets a bit frustrating, but it's well used.
I can think of a single film that has mixed sci-fi and action so well. Most sci-fi/action films are actually action films IN SPACE and most good sci-fi films are not great action.
But it is R16 for a reason. Lots of people and aliens get horrible things done to them. And the "Fock"ing.
GO AND SEE IT. I COMMAND YOU! |

| District 9 is DAMN AWESOME! I saw it last week when it came out, and by the goddess! When I heard about it, I knew there had to be a reason the PJ backed it The bit that I didn't quite like was what they used as a reason to encorage the public to call in about Wikus... But other than that...REALLY good!! SS |

That bit was AWESOME! I like that - totally what I would do if I was trying to catch a guy. And everyone's responses to it in the shop! |

| Watched it tonight, must say I Thoroughly enjoyed it. And trust me, the rest of the theatre knew I enjoyed it. Not in an annoyed manner.
It was so damn well made. Would love to point out my favourite parts, but I feel like I'd give too much away. :3 |

| LOL. I saw that movie at 7pm today. First R16 movie I've seen at the cinema since I turned 16 n___n;; This movie was INTENSE. The ending was... IDK. I want to say sad but not really. Y'know, with the flower making..
I think if you plan to see this movie, you should definitely go see it at the cinemas as you won't get that same effect through watching it on DVD (:
I hope they don't make a crap ass sequel. District 10: Three years later. LAME! |

| Ok, I'm a big movie geek so first thing I have to throw out there is that Peter Jackson did not make this film, he produced it, and pretty much in the case of District 9 that involved giving Neill Blomkamp $30 million to make whatever he felt like making, which in the end is really a feature length movie of his short film Alive in Joburg.
The full story is more that both Peter and Neill were commisioned to make the Halo movie, they put alot of time and passion and money into the project just to have the studio turn around and say, nope, sorry we don't care and have all the work and time and money wasted, so the two ditched the studio and the project. Peter recognised the talent of Neill and gave him the money and the rescources of Weta Workshops to make this film... and what a film.
While it's easy to say "well its got elements of this and this and this" it really comes across as a totally original film. Something I'm glad to see when the movie industry is filled with either adaptations, remakes or crappy comedies, it's great to see something like this (albeit that it's a remake of his own short film).
There is definate symbolism in there in regards to life in South Africa and the struggle with the race relations, considering the slums they filmed at were real it makes it that much more shocking. However it also gets that some times you just want a fun movie and doesn't overload us with that and delivers some fantastic action, and I don't mean that Transformers Michael Bay style action where everything explodes if you look at it long enough, but the explosions actually come across as exciting when they do happen (which is a fair bit) but in general the action just seems to stem from older action films rather that the modern over the top effects.
Then again this is quite an effects heavy movie, but it looks fantastic, to make something like this on a budget of $30 million and it looks alot better than some films that cost $100 - $200 million is so fantastic.
The acting is also great, and by that I mean it seems human. Its not thespian work or even Oscar work, its just human. |

| Just saw it. For 30m Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp do everything right. Give Michael Bay and Steven Spielburg 200m and they do everything wrong. |
