Best way to make a cleaver? By Rolly. 03/08/09, 10:07 am |
| So, I was wondering, what is a practical way to make a prop cleaver for my Rena cosplay?
You can see part of the cleaver in my sig....

I was thinking of using cardboard or something similar, but I'm still not too sure on how to do it. |

| I wants a real cleaver. Mine was cheap and it broke and now I have to cut pumpkin with a 2 inch vege knife. *sigh*
Balsa wood is nice and light, and you can sand it down to make an "edge" that isn't sharp but is clearly an edge. I think that would work for the blade. Balsa also isn't too brittle, so you can make nice big things, and they wont fall to bits if you swing it around. Cardboard could work, probably wouldn't suggest paper mache for something like this though. Maybe some kind of plastic or craft foam, but I don't know anything about those except they're nice and light too, but I'm not sure how it would handle being sharpened. |

| You could make it out of insulation foam! It's a biatch to work with but the results are quite nice! http://tayuyaofthesound.deviantart.com/art/cleaver-anatomy-idea-87917301 |

| Balsa wood sounds like a good idea! I used some balsa to make a model airplane for science in Intermediate - I kept thinking I would break the wood since it was so light and delicate-like... @_@
Is insulation foam expensive? I have to do more research on that.
I remember that someone made Bleach zanpakuto's out of cardboard.... by putting layers and layers, sanding it down and then hot glue gunning everything.... but I has no hot glue gun. ;_;
I shall do some more research onto those materials.
Anyone have any more suggestions? Come on, you prop whore gurus! |
