Fake Blood
Post By RainbowMoonDust. 16/08/09, 12:24 pm

For my halloween cosplay I will need fake blood. The trouble is it has to go on both my skin AND my costume which will be mostly white. gonk However, seeing as I would like to reuse said costume I would prefer it if the blood didn't stain. nono I need to know if there something out there I can use for realistic looking fake blood that will not irritate my skin AND stain my outfit. So any suggestions would be great, thanks! Very Happy

;0;

I would suggest the movie blood that we brew up in Film,
but uh,
It may stain. It usually doesn't, but there has been incidents.

I was in a very similar fake-blood-dilemma last Halloween. And I'm sorry to say that I didn't find a satisfactory solution. Most fake blood will stain a little bit, especially on light-coloured fabric. There might be some amazing non-staining variety out there, but I haven't found it. (That being said, don't give up hope just yet!)

All I can really suggest is that you use cheap (ie. go to Kutwells) fabric for your outfit, because it is just going to get covered in bloodstains anyway.
Then when you want to have a non-Halloween version of the outfit, you can use the same pattern to make a new outfit. Sure, it's kind of a hassle, but it'll be much faster the second time around, and it's probably easier than trying to wash out the fake blood.
Also, this way you can go CRAZY with the fake blood, and you won't be all "Ohh, I'll just use a little bit here so I can wash it out later..."
(This is what I did with my Aeris costume - I made a ripped blood-covered Halloween version and later on I made a nice new one.)

As for fake blood recipes, I used golden syrup with a little red food colouring and cocoa powder mixed in. This probably won't irritate your skin, and it's quite delicious too. But it will stain fabrics, and it is very sticky, so try to keep it out of your hair/wig.
I also painted on some blood with some acrylic paint (only on my costume though, not on my skin!) and this made pretty convincing dried blood. Also, it doesn't rub off on furniture/other people like the golden syrup recipe does.

Vinegar added to the washing water and then drying in the sun can bleach out stains (especially real blood) but I'm not sure about fake blood.

Most fake blood stains like a mofo.
If the costume is all white, you could always just bleach it all out afterwards. Do a test first though!!

Possibly sew some kind of cover with the blood over where you want it? Then take it off once you're done?

I don't know how well/if that would work though =P

What is your fabric made from? Polyester tends to be super easy to get stains out of but even that isn't a guarantee- I have a doll I made that now has rust stains that won't come out.

I can only re-suggest making another copy of it out of cheap fabric and using paint. You may want to mix acrylic paint with PVA to make it a little more translucent and with a touch of black/brown to make it look like blood. You can use it on your skin too and you will not have to worry about it sticking to other people and you can have fun at the end of the night peeling it all off ;)

If you want blood that can go in your mouth, you can either buy some (some places have fake blood that you can put in your mouth)

OR

golden syrup + red food colouring (plus the teeny tinest hint of green to make it more realisitc) A warning though: it is REALLY sticky and takes forever to dry. And tasty (I licked all mine off my mouth last time I used it... it had face paint mixed in it by that time too sweatdrop )

This is a long shot, but given the unusual circumstance it might be worth a try.

Get some modeling clay, mix into the color of your preference. Add some nail polish remover in so it will turn a bit more gooey and more liquidy and gel-like. Let it drip into the shape you want onto a piece of baking paper. Bake until solid. Fix with gloss. So once you are done, you will have perfectly blood shaped solid plastic things.

Then just stick them onto the costume with double sided tape.

Edible (and safe!) fake blood can be pretty expensive. The cheaper stuff has a lot of nasty ingredients that you probably don't want to ingest- assuming you care about stomach pains, diarrhoea etc. They won't kill you or anything but it can be kinda uncomfortable... I would go with the golden syrup idea recipe. Super inexpensive and yummm. I would recommend adding cocoa or coffee or something else to darken though, as spamtomatospam said, or else it can come out really really red.
