Hair dying advice

My mum has decided that I'm allowed to dye my hair purple =D

One of my friends thinks I should prelighten my hair first, so that it actually goes, you know, colored. But I need to make sure it's still a color that's allowed at school, aka not as amazingly bright purple as I want. My hair is a pretty dark brown color, ('seal brown' according to wikipedia on my monitor), and I want it to come out purple enough to be obviously purple, but not so purple I get stood down from school.

So, should I prelighten my hair first and hope that it doesn't come out so light that it goes insane, or should I leave it how it is and hope some color shows up if I dye it?

Also, what are some good brands of lightening hair stuff / (semi)permanent purple hair dye? Something that's not extremely expensive that I can get from a supermarket or something fairly easy like that would be ideal :)

From what I've seen/know of you can't get a good purple dye from the supermarket. The best advice I can give you is go to your hairdresser and ask them and get them to do it. I know it'll be expensive but this way you can get the right shade of purple.

Don't prelighten!
That will make your hair go PURPLE!!

What I did for my formal was get my hairdresser to mix the purple colour with a rich brown colour and it turned out awesome

(didn't get sent home either ^^)

hii ~

i've been bleaching/dying my own hair for nearly four years now.
and i'd say don't bleach your hair out first unless you want a super bright purple.
i'd also recommend L'Oreal for their dark purple dye.
i used it a while back with this result:

That could work. I was going to get my hairdresser to do it anyway - she's a family friend and if I buy the hairdye/etc, she'll do the dying for me for a reasonable price. Any idea how expensive it would be to get an actual hairdresser to do it? (just roughly, so I can know whether it's even worth considering or not)

Would that dye have any effect on dark brown hair, though? What if I bleached my hair a little bit (is that even possible?) and dyed it brown mixed with purple?

it would hold on brown hair.
you'd get a very dark colour with purple highlights in the sun, i believe.

i think it'd look pretty awesome. :3

I'd say it depends on how long your hair is - just ring and ask. They should be able to give you a good quote for the dying and the actual dye.

Is there any way to make my hair like, a tiny bit lighter, so instead of going dark that looks purple in the sun it goes purple, but without going insanely purple?

My hair's dark almost black brown and I have managed to use supermarket dye to get a really dark purple that showed up under sunlight. If you have anything lighter than say... ██ #2D1E00 ██ it'll should be that colour. (The examples on the box are usually fairly accurate.) I used Schwarzkopf brilliance in one of the purple shades.
It is permanent dye though... and I have not had much luck with temporary dyes that have been applied to un-lightened hair.

Look for a rinse first to test whether you really do want to go this colour for a while. It works differently to a dye in that it just coats the outside of your hair rather than seeping in and colouring right through. Permanent dye already contains peroxide which is what is used to bleach hair.
The rinse will wash out over time so that it you do get tired of it or you want to try another colour you can rather easily.

I used to colour my hair dark red or even burgundy this way. I have a disadvantage/advantage in that my hair is already light- colours were clear but it takes 5 bottles to get a good shade!

Oh just as a warning be careful to not mix up your dyes! Some natural dyes and some men's products will react in a very bad way to normal hair dyes and will destroy your hair.
