I don't mind backpackers, but I'd like to be able to walk to and from the venue. Motels say I do~ Josh your age? I have booked the same travel days. And you must be rich! Rich at 13. Or you don't spend much on fabric hence have no cosplays, dito anime, or manga. True, but I will have a quick look anyway.

Funny. One of those statements is true. Of course you can wear pretty much anything on the street. I wore medieval garb to a busy coffee shop, just ask deceptive magick. And she piked on just the ears! Of course I often end up in garb in service stations and such. |

were you wearing...elven ears or something? o-o
haha, i think people around here have got used to that kind of thing this time of year. today i went into a library in Chii's ballgown pink + white thingy, and no one batted an eyelid, except a three year old who thought i was an angel. >.<;
Ollithia: everyone likes VK! it's not a bad thing that it's not cotume. i'd say it could be considered a positive thing, since it means it's passed its time of freakshow status and entered the mainstream. (: in Japan, at least. |

VK, decora, lolita, oshare. all in the non-costume box for me. they're awesome, and you can dress in them, by all means, but it's not costume or cosplay.

| Cosplay is dressing up as well known characters or people from movies. So if someone dresses up as someone famous in the VK world then that could be argued as being cosplay. |

Re: Chch Cosplayers going to Auckgeddon By MissEevee. 06/07/09, 04:59 pm |
| it could be. but the fashion has been around longer than the bands that currently portray it, so i would still say if you dress in visual kei, even to imitate someone else, you're dressing in visual kei, not in costume.
i suppose if you take a band member who has deviated from the style enough to make it their own, i might consider it cosplay.
hmm.

| Most musicians take a style they like and make it their own. It's the same for VK bands. Most of the original ones who have been around for a while would of developed their own style and if someone cosplays as them then it's cosplay |

were you wearing...elven ears or something? o-o today i went into a library in Chii's ballgown pink + white thingy, and no one batted an eyelid, except a three year old Most people are polite, and Brighton or Hansen park are good places to see oddly dressed people every day. Actually see more now anyway. Saw lots in a pattern book at spotlight. So yeah I think people are more immune to it now. But a ball dress for a trip to the library? Deceptive Magick and friend flew down to CHCH, so they did not have room for cosplay, only nekko ears. We sorted out the details of the meet late, so I was the only one to turn up. As I have not finished a cosplay yet, and she asked for cosplay I wore my medieval tunic and brat (cloak like thing.) We wondered around town, went to eat, then mini-golf, then to finish the evening a busy coffee shop. And she decided to take the ears off. Technically I used the period garb as a costume.

I don't think it is a matter of style at all. If two norms were going to a dress up party and on dressed up as a doctor and one as a goth loli them they are both in costume, as in they are wearing them as a costume. Unless he/she wears goth loli normally, in which case she is not really dressing up. If you wear them as fashion normally then they are not costume.
PS. Technically Ollithia is right. Cosplay is playing a character. If the character you are playing is visual Kei, then you will of course dress in visual kei. But you are doing it as a cosplay, not a lifestyle. I guess you could argue it is both cause you are in VK, but then the person doing it cares more about the cosplay aspect? If they just wanted VK then they would not be trying to imitate someone!
And VK can be imitative of the fashion or original surely.
And please can we have the thread back. We need it for organizing stuff. Start a thread if you must. Do it in the general, not cosplay or CCC areas. You will get more feedback out of the CCC. |

Re: Chch Cosplayers going to Auckgeddon By MissEevee. 06/07/09, 05:21 pm |
| i wouldn't say many of the current VK bands deviate at all from normal VK style.
Mana-sama, i would accept.
Dir en Grey all look like cloned examples of regular VK fashion. as do GazettE, as do AliceNine, as do Phantasmagoria, as do TCST, as do Blam Honey. etc. and there's nothing wrong with them choosing to remain true to the style. it just makes it Harajuku street fashion rather than ott costume originality.
iunno. i don't see any difference between dressing up as one of them and dressing in visual kei wear.
Highlander: mm. being a lolita i have a problem with the phrase "dressed up as a goth loli". call me a purist, but i call street fashion street fashion and costume costume. a lolita character is fine in my books, but i don't think lolita in itself can be considered a costume. and there are rather a lot of lolis who'd agree with me on that. don't be fooled, they can get violent! D: and yes, of course. take your thread. we apologise.
ps. i live right around the corner from Hansen's Park and i get odd looks there all the time! Try Riccarton and Hornby malls. they're the funniest places to go for the looks you get. xp |

Stupid windows By Highlander. 06/07/09, 06:04 pm |
| I just lost my entire reply trying to shift it from this thread.
Anyway for further discussion of lolita/VK as fashion vs as costume I have started a thread in the Random area.
This is because people in this thread are trying to organize their trips to Auckgeddon. And those posts will get lost in the side discussion. If it is important to you to continue this then head over to there.
PS. Remember Tammies warning about one on one discussions. As this involves three or four people then rather than PMing I have opted for another thread instead. |

| @- Miss Eevee- You would have to be pretty brave to cosplay/ wear Japanese based clothes through super markets in Chch. People seem so- judgmental- always eyeing people in Chch malls..
@- Highlander- Yes, back on topic !!- uhh Fred - Don't really mind your band of merry-men... as longs as feel safe- feel like can trust them...

| You call $60m a room cheaper. Seriously I have one out fit to finish tonight, and out by 7pm, and another two to finish tomorrow, pack Thurs, off Friday, back Sunday, so I will think about this more after the weekend. And I can already tell I will live to regret this.
I will be arriving about 7am I think, with Riven, Mandie and Aura.
And how can a cosplayer have no cosplays? Well apart from me, I new. But then by this weekend! |

| Leave about 7:45pm
So your parents are O.K. with you gong to other cities, staying with strange men, spending lots of money, attending geddons, hanging out with cosplayers, but not with letting you cosplay. Unless you are cosplaying certain skimpy outfits?
My parents never spent that much on me. Well there was the Commodre 64, that cost $900, but that was a one off for both of us. Cause computers were the future, or so the salesman said.
Have you really never cosplayed? Surprised. |

Re: Chch Cosplayers going to Auckgeddon By Freddie. 07/07/09, 11:19 am |
| Huh? No, I mean, our flight up there gets into the airport at 7:50pm.
Theres a big difference, I think. The former situation requires, iunno, worldly knowledge. I went through a phase where I spent 90% of my time barefoot in the middle of the city with nothing but a skateboard and mates to get by. They trust me with that kinda stuff. Cosplay, to them, is just grown adults playing fancy dress. Plus its expensive.
My parents don't spend too much on me. I cover as much as I can with my pay, they pick up the rest.
